Blatter Ad hominem, Hampden, Thompson

819

Rumours circulated last week that is was Sepp Blatter who leaked the million or so emails to The Sunday Times, allowing them to uncover previously hidden payments between Fifa delegates at the time of the Qatar 2022 vote.  That looks fanciful in the face of Blatters tub-thumping, that criticism of the voting process is motivated by racism.

The motivation behind The Sunday Times is irrelevant, Fifa is either corrupt or not.  Blatter is indulging in the ancient art of Ad hominem, rejecting a claim not on its own merits, but on an irrelevant facet of the person making the claim.  Sony, Adidas and others have led the way is asking for proper oversight of Fifa to protect their brands being damaged by association.  This is all very well but by postponing any disclosure until after the forthcoming World Cup, Fifa have years to allow sponsor angst to dissipate.  Expect nothing to change.

What a fascinating wee story that the SFA are considering leaving Hampden to Queens Park to maintain and ‘fill’ with a few hundred spectators each game.  If this is a bargaining position to force Queens into cutting a generous deal, fair enough.

In the event the SFA decide to move away from Hampden, it’s worth keeping an eye on the stadium.  Those who appear intent on driving Newco Rangers into liquidation could do with a spare stadium in Glasgow, just in case the current owners of Ibrox do not succumb to manipulation.

On the subject of that lot, Dundee United’s Stephen Thompson’s playing a blinder. Not only is he cherry-picking their youth talent but he’s also raised the inconvenient fact – Newco Rangers is a two year old football club. Follow the money on this one.

Well done to BBC Alba and Alex O’Henley for the outstanding Jock Stein documentary last night.  It’s difficult to add much to the Stein story after all these years but they managed to do so. The level of detail contained therein was remarkable, and it was nothing short of astonishing that we heard first-hand testimony on Jock playing for Blantyre Vics.

If you’re short of a Father’s Day gift, Tommy Gemmell, Bertie Auld and John Hughes will be signing copies of their books at the Celtic Store in Argyle St from 1pm until 4pm on Saturday.  Three Lions, one venue, bring your camera.

It’s also an enormous privilege to announce that after we hosted a live chat session with Willie Wallace last year and Tommy Gemmell last month, Bertie Auld will be live on CQN from 1pm this Friday.  Bertie is the strong silent type, so you’ll need to prepare a few questions to bring him out of his shell.

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best, freshly signed by the man himself this morning.

    Ian Murray to Hibs?

    I’ll second that

  4. I reckon John Collins would prefer a move to Celtic than Hibs. He knows that any move to Celtic may result in him getting the job at some point and he can dine at the top table of the Champions League. He hs done Hibs and had a decent record there. He won’t taint his reputation by going back. Petrie stabbed him in the back and he won’t risk that again.

If Collins is Celtic No2 and Ronny doesn’t work out he can get the top job at Celtic on a temp basis like Neil Lennon if Ronny is a huge success and gets head hunted possibly the same result.

John Collins if offered will be Celtic number 2 before any other offer I reckon.

I think you’re right LB. Also – Hibs is a poisoned chalace. He’s already been there and couldn’t achieve what he wanted. I was talking to a chap who did some coaching for Hibs and knows the players etc. Before the final playoff game against Hamilton, he met a couple of them for golf – they told him they had already been guven the bullet. This is 1st team players before the biggest game of the season for them to help keep the club up! Mantal.

Ian Murray signed a new deal at Dumbarton. Not sure Hibs will pay the compensation. I suspect they have had the new manager lined up for some time.

If rumours are to be believed Terry’s wife is not keeping well. He may have decided to head back up the road. If Hughes is binned at ICT I can see Butcher back there.

You are not too far off the mark. Butcher told a whole host of player in January I believe who would not be staying beyond the season. I believe there were around 10 told they would not be staying including Thompson and Heffernan who the Hibs supporters felt were there better players. Some were advised to find new clubs in the window and nobody wanted them.

Butcher made huge mistakes at Hibernian. His biggest mistake was giving the players no motivation to try a leg for him.

Sometimes certain managers and players just don’t fit at certain clubs and Butcher never quite looked the part in the green of Hibernian.

Did Butcher tell those players that they were being released in the hope that it would motivate them, either to play so well that the board had a change of heart or that they would catch the eye of other suitors?

Whichever, it’s backfired on him big time.

Collins is not unemployed. He works for the SFA and is an Adidas ambassador and has been for a long time.

He worked at Livingston for free before joining the SFA doing a DOF role. He is very well thought of at Livingston and put a lot of good things in place to do with the community which Mark Burchill is carrying on in his role as No 2.

John Collins certainly devides opinion but he is very well thought of in the game. He has good contacts is a fitness guru he is a very good coach and is comfortable with the media. he has also played at the highest level in international football and at club level. He is a perfect number 2 for Ronny.

    VP,

Cheers, thats puts a wee bit of pressure on. If the Serb FA are found guilty by any investigation, it creates a dilema for our board, in fact scratch that, the announcement that an invesitgation is being considered by UEFA, makes it hard to justify not reporting the SFA to the CFCB.

Looks like UEFA will be busy investigating the Serbs, could the SFA get away with it again ?
