Blatter Ad hominem, Hampden, Thompson

819

Rumours circulated last week that is was Sepp Blatter who leaked the million or so emails to The Sunday Times, allowing them to uncover previously hidden payments between Fifa delegates at the time of the Qatar 2022 vote.  That looks fanciful in the face of Blatters tub-thumping, that criticism of the voting process is motivated by racism.

The motivation behind The Sunday Times is irrelevant, Fifa is either corrupt or not.  Blatter is indulging in the ancient art of Ad hominem, rejecting a claim not on its own merits, but on an irrelevant facet of the person making the claim.  Sony, Adidas and others have led the way is asking for proper oversight of Fifa to protect their brands being damaged by association.  This is all very well but by postponing any disclosure until after the forthcoming World Cup, Fifa have years to allow sponsor angst to dissipate.  Expect nothing to change.

What a fascinating wee story that the SFA are considering leaving Hampden to Queens Park to maintain and ‘fill’ with a few hundred spectators each game.  If this is a bargaining position to force Queens into cutting a generous deal, fair enough.

In the event the SFA decide to move away from Hampden, it’s worth keeping an eye on the stadium.  Those who appear intent on driving Newco Rangers into liquidation could do with a spare stadium in Glasgow, just in case the current owners of Ibrox do not succumb to manipulation.

On the subject of that lot, Dundee United’s Stephen Thompson’s playing a blinder. Not only is he cherry-picking their youth talent but he’s also raised the inconvenient fact – Newco Rangers is a two year old football club. Follow the money on this one.

Well done to BBC Alba and Alex O’Henley for the outstanding Jock Stein documentary last night.  It’s difficult to add much to the Stein story after all these years but they managed to do so. The level of detail contained therein was remarkable, and it was nothing short of astonishing that we heard first-hand testimony on Jock playing for Blantyre Vics.

If you’re short of a Father’s Day gift, Tommy Gemmell, Bertie Auld and John Hughes will be signing copies of their books at the Celtic Store in Argyle St from 1pm until 4pm on Saturday.  Three Lions, one venue, bring your camera.

It’s also an enormous privilege to announce that after we hosted a live chat session with Willie Wallace last year and Tommy Gemmell last month, Bertie Auld will be live on CQN from 1pm this Friday.  Bertie is the strong silent type, so you’ll need to prepare a few questions to bring him out of his shell.

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best, freshly signed by the man himself this morning.

Thanks for the heads up r.e Petrie , did’nt know he seems to have a bad rep , not much into other teams find it difficult enough keeping up with the shennigans at Celtic Park ;))

He managed to turn a team of underachievers at Hibs into cup winners defeating Killie 5-1 in the final.

He would be a number 2 at Celtic and will follow Ronny’s instructions and maybe use some of his own methods. His teams are fit. He could also strike a dead ball. I’m sure a few of our players would benefit from his guidance in that area.

Looks a great fit to me.

  3. Had a great morning chatting with Tommy Gemmell while he was signing a large pile of books.

On Big Yogi Tommy said it was murder playing behind him as you never knew what he was going to do next. On a good day he was unplayable and on a bad day he would get the ball, stand on it and fall on his backside. His impersonation of Yogi in the dressing room after a bad game was priceless!

On Jock Stein – we chatted for ages about the programme last night. Tommy said that at half time Jock would simply say to players not playing well – why are you trying that? Leave that to the ones that can do it better than you. You do the things I have told you you are good at.

The player would go out and have a great second half after having a stinker in the first half. And the opposition would not be expecting the sudden change in form.

Tommy said Jock was a genius.

I like the idea of John Collins as Celtic’s number two and agree with LiviBhoy that he will fancy his chances of being manager one day if Deila does very well and moves to England or elsewhere. JC burned his bridges with Hibs and I would be amazed if he goes back there.

I almost feel sorry for Butcher. His reputation is now in tatters. Dreadful hoofball tactics that were entirely unsuited to Hibs and abysmal man-management resulted in disaster. A quite incredible season for him when you consider that he had Inverness second top when he left.

    Funny ol’ game.

I agree that he took an average Hibs side to cup final victory but most of what you and others have said doesn’t amount to a ‘very good coach’ in my eyes. I’ve seen qualities highlighted but not necessarily in coaching footballers.

I’m not being obtuse or looking for an argument, as I said I haven’t followed his career particularly closely but from what I’ve read so far I’d be looking for more.

I’m hoping for someone who can make players better, who’s tactically astute and can effectively convey his message to the players.

Do you think he meets the criteria?

Aye the idea of the Serbian FA being investigated for not applying UEFA FFP correctly is an interesting development which can now be added to the Res12 mix.

For sake of accuracy Serbian FA are in the frame for granting the UEFA licence at 31st March checkpoint under Art 50 when they appear to have ignored overdue payable until somebody blew the whistle.

Res12 established that our SFA were correct to grant the licence at 31st March but have questions to answer on what they did at the 30th June checkpoint under Art66 of FFP that may have impacted on the licence being retained and not withdrawn.

In a nutshell Red Star had debts that CL money would enable to be paid. Sounds familiar.

What the Serbian ‘FA seem accused of is the equivalent of given Red Star a bite of the CL cherry to pay the bills whose avoidance of paying, put them in a position to get a bite at the self same cherry, whilst other clubs playing financially fair, were denied that opportunity to taste the cherry themselves.

Very very unfair and not what FFP is about.

Our own SFA would not have acted like that surely?

Just had Celtic on the phone asking why I hadn’t renewed my season ticket and if I would reconsider.I told the rep that I had changed my seat and got another season ticket for my youngest.Hope this doesn’t mean the take up for this season is very very low.

  20. I would love to see John Collins back at CP as asst manager. Whether he would work under a younger less experienced coach than him is another matter .

  21. I guess if Peter Lawwell asked Stefan Johansen for his views on Ronny Deila, then it would be remiss of him not to talk to Scott Brown about John Collins.

That might explain the delay in crowning John. After all he was a shoo-in, was he not?
