Blatter Ad hominem, Hampden, Thompson

819

Rumours circulated last week that is was Sepp Blatter who leaked the million or so emails to The Sunday Times, allowing them to uncover previously hidden payments between Fifa delegates at the time of the Qatar 2022 vote.  That looks fanciful in the face of Blatters tub-thumping, that criticism of the voting process is motivated by racism.

The motivation behind The Sunday Times is irrelevant, Fifa is either corrupt or not.  Blatter is indulging in the ancient art of Ad hominem, rejecting a claim not on its own merits, but on an irrelevant facet of the person making the claim.  Sony, Adidas and others have led the way is asking for proper oversight of Fifa to protect their brands being damaged by association.  This is all very well but by postponing any disclosure until after the forthcoming World Cup, Fifa have years to allow sponsor angst to dissipate.  Expect nothing to change.

What a fascinating wee story that the SFA are considering leaving Hampden to Queens Park to maintain and ‘fill’ with a few hundred spectators each game.  If this is a bargaining position to force Queens into cutting a generous deal, fair enough.

In the event the SFA decide to move away from Hampden, it’s worth keeping an eye on the stadium.  Those who appear intent on driving Newco Rangers into liquidation could do with a spare stadium in Glasgow, just in case the current owners of Ibrox do not succumb to manipulation.

On the subject of that lot, Dundee United’s Stephen Thompson’s playing a blinder. Not only is he cherry-picking their youth talent but he’s also raised the inconvenient fact – Newco Rangers is a two year old football club. Follow the money on this one.

Well done to BBC Alba and Alex O’Henley for the outstanding Jock Stein documentary last night.  It’s difficult to add much to the Stein story after all these years but they managed to do so. The level of detail contained therein was remarkable, and it was nothing short of astonishing that we heard first-hand testimony on Jock playing for Blantyre Vics.

If you’re short of a Father’s Day gift, Tommy Gemmell, Bertie Auld and John Hughes will be signing copies of their books at the Celtic Store in Argyle St from 1pm until 4pm on Saturday.  Three Lions, one venue, bring your camera.

It’s also an enormous privilege to announce that after we hosted a live chat session with Willie Wallace last year and Tommy Gemmell last month, Bertie Auld will be live on CQN from 1pm this Friday.  Bertie is the strong silent type, so you’ll need to prepare a few questions to bring him out of his shell.

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best, freshly signed by the man himself this morning.

  1. So, after wasting vast amounts of money on the new Hampden, which could have been spent on developing football in Scotland, because we already had a plethora of perfectly good stadia, then delivering a crap stadium for supporters, but that doesn’t matter coz we’ve got plush offices….. the SFA now think its an option to move out

Tell you what, why do YOU get out, and we can vote in people who are capable

OK, but weren’t clubs told years ago that they would be barred from the CL if they broke FFP rules? Man City and PSG are in breach of the rules. It is much easier for UEFA to punish a Serbian club.

A ban was always a final option if earlier deterrents did not deter. The idea though is to put a cap on player wage inflation not diminish the competition.

I am an uneducated, geriatric Celtic supporter.

Left school as soon as I turned 15.

Worked very often as an unskilled labourer.

It is not hard to confuse me.

I would just like some of our sharper minds to explain to me why a Celtic site immediately condemns guys who use crude or offensive language,.. good on it.., but tolerates & accepts posters whose contributions have repeatedly conflicted with every ethos of our club,… people who are openly racist, fascist, supremacist & divisive.

    Why the double standard ??

thanks for posting the link to BBC Alba’s Jock Stein documentary.

I just finished watching it here in Oslo and the tears are flowing.

As Paul67 said, I didn’t think there could be anything else to say on the Big Man’s story, or any other way to say it, after truly great pieces of work like Archie McPherson’s biography and Hugh McIlvanney’s documentary (Stein Shankly Busby).

But BBC Alba’s programme was like watching it all with a fresh pair of eyes. Loved the cameos played by actors to illustrate the early days – and the freshness of thought, even down to the likes of using The Skids’ Into The Valley to soundtrack the Big Man’s move to Dunfermline! Well done indeed. Brilliant.

  8. Great story on the Maestro from fishul site.

RIO Ferdinand is not someone you would imagine is prone to being star-struck.

As one of the most successful defenders in British football, Ferdinand’s 12-year stay at the heart of the Manchester United defence saw him collect amongst others, a UEFA Champions League Winner’s medal, six Premier League titles and two League Cups.

He has also faced some of the world’s best attackers both domestically and with the England national team across a distinguished 81-cap career. But it seems, despite his many achievements in the game, that nothing prepared him for meeting one of his bhoyhood idols.

During a stop in Australia as part of last year’s pre-season tour with Manchester United, the defender saw a familiar face in the shape of a mild-mannered football fan who was touring the training ground with his children.

And in a mix of excitement and disbelief, a stunned Ferdinand blurted out – “that’s Paul McStay!”

Now, as he looks forward to a special charity game later this year where he will lead his own select XI out against a Celtic team led by the Maestro himself, Ferdinand recalls the moment he met his hero and explains his love for the Hoops.

He said: “When I was a kid, I always liked Scottish football – I don’t know why.

“I would watch Celtic quite a bit and I used to collect the Pannini stickers and, there was Paul McStay, he was just a great player. He never looked flustered, he was just classy and always looked above everyone else on the pitch.

“I always thought he never got the respect and adulation he deserved. I can see why, because he’s not really one for putting himself out there, he’s a little bit like Paul Scholes in that respect but for me, he was a top player.

“It was weird because we’d finished training and I’d walked in to get a massage. Paul was walking around getting programmes signed with his kids and I said to the fella that was stretching me, ‘that’s Paul McStay’ and he didn’t know who he was.

“Then Jimmy Lumsden, who was a coach under David Moyes and is a Scot, came in and I asked him and he said that it was Paul McStay. I said he had to get me his autograph, get me a picture or something with him.

“The rest of lads were coming in and they had no idea who he was. They were walking past him like he was no one but he was better than them. They were asking who he was but I said I wasn’t going to waste my time explaining, I’m going to get a picture with Paul McStay.

“So I had a good talk with him, met his kids, we took some pictures and he’s a really nice guy.

“I think in Australia he doesn’t get recognised so I think his kids were quite surprised that a few of us knew him, Giggsy stopped by as well. I think he was looking at his kids to say, “look, someone knows me.”

As part of a partnership between Ferdinand’s own charitable foundation and the Celtic FC Foundation, Celtic Park will play host to ‘Maestrio’ – a legends football game featuring a host of former Hoops’ players and past and presents stars of the game.

The aim of the match is to raise funds for both charities with all monies devoted to projects supported by the two charities in Glasgow and London respectively.

She turns my stomach everytime she comes on the radio to defend the energy company prices and policies (probably because she sounds like thatcher).

She used to defend the indefensible banks. Now it is the indefensible power companies.

Tonight’s performance gave me the impression she’s beginning to wilt at the lies she has to spin.

I reckon she’ll jump ship soon. Back to the banks? Onto the next industry screwing us all? Petroleum?

We are at the start of a new era and I feel we need to be patient with our new manager given that we are so close to the CL qualifyers taking into account the World cup affect when at least three of our first team will not be available until there World cup adventure finishes. Our new manager needs to appoint an assistant and get to know his squad very quickly.I suggest it may well be to big an ask for us to qualify for the CL proper we said when Lennie was boss that we needed to strengthen and that is still the case but Ronny needs to make up his own mind where the team needs strengthened and find players in our price bracket this is no easy task in such a short time frame so I believe patience may well be needed on our part.H.H.
