Blinkered Views risky punt against St Mirren

1113

In his Bookies Corner article for the current issue of CQN Magazine, columnist, Blinkered Views, suggested St Mirren offered good value for a punt on relegation.  I spoke to him when he submitted the article and suggested, “Surely Dunfermline?”  He agreed Dunfermline were most likely for the drop but they offered no value.  St Mirren, on the other hand, were 9/1 for the drop and he made a good case why this was worth a bet.

St Mirren promptly spoiled Christmas for thousands (not your or me) by coming from behind to beat Rangers but that has been their only win in 8 league games.  We also don’t need to be reminded that when visiting St Mirren Park, form is a poor guide.  Celtic exited the Scottish Cup there a week after beating Saints 7-0 at Celtic Park.  They are a team who can raise their game for the big occasion and the visit of Celtic, live on TV, is as big as it gets around Paisley.

Paddy McCourt has enjoyed his visits there and has been key to Celtic collecting the points a couple of times.  Don’t be surprised if he makes a match winning appearance from the bench.

Was Ellis on the board at any point during Murray’s tenure?

You see, yesterday, I was talking to my mate who’s of the other persuasion. A gem of a guy but as bright as a 10 Watt bulb.

He was all excited because he’d been on a forum called ‘Bouncy Bouncy’ which was proclaiming the saviour of the hun as being a gent whom Murray had fallen out with. This ‘gent’ offered millions to buy the club from Murray, who on a point of principle refused and sold it to MBB instead.

    The rest is history…

If you’re working when David Rovics is playing you’re in for a treat

  3. Ernie,

I did say ‘are they disabled or something?’ and a dodgy knee counts as that.

The vast majority will be able bodied and a 15 minute walk should not be a problem.

In addition, the callers never mentioned any such physical issues.

  4. Holywood rumour going about that, when the MBB eventually sacks the cleaning staff at ipox to save some cash, Michael Moorehouse wants to make a new film about the stricken football club.

It’s going to be called “Bowling for Govangrime”.

    sorry,

  7. RE: Being in the Wrongers End at Hampden …

Back in the day and perhaps even in more recent times, it was common for Celtic fans to have whole portions of the covered end, even in cup finals.

I firmly remember being at a League Cup final against Hibs (1974?) when Celtic had about a half of the Rangers End with Hibs fans having the other. I remember especially the almighty barney during half-time, when hundreds of us poured on to the track to escape the mayhem.

More recently, at the centenary ‘No Votes In Scotland’ final, the Celtic fans had a good-sized chunk of the Rangers end.

There must be plenty of other examples.

    Just saying, like …

    Headtheball –

In the 80s, and maybe even the 70s, whenever we went to Pittodrie, the Celtic support had to negotiate a hill between the beach-side bus park and the Beach End at the stadium.

One midweek game it had been raining most of the day and the hill was a veritable quagmire and people were slipping and finding themselves covered in mud. One of the men from our bus was getting on a bit and after a few steps, decided he couldn’t manage it in those circumstances. My brother and I walked him round towards the Aberdeen end, which was the only way to avoid the hill.

We were stopped by the cops and told to get back. We tried to explain the situation but they were having none of it. I argued that they had no right to stop us as we had a valid reason for coming this way. I was threatened with arrest. Eventually a senior police officer intervened and offered a compromise. The elderly gent, who was wearing no club colours, would be escorted by one of his officers to the Celtic area, but my brother and I had to go back and climb mount improbable.

It is ridiculous that people should be subjected to such a situation, rain or no rain, just to get to see a football match.

Point taken BT, but blog rules prevent me from spelling what I really wanted to say……..:)

  12. Celtic fans calling shortbread or snyde expressing the importance of fairness for all with regard to the tax outcome shall not receive anything other than accusations of bitterness, or, have the ” Scottish football cannot survive without Rangers” argument thrown at them. Pathetic but perfectly understandable. The fact no person with a sense of fairness, no person who has a sense of decency, and no person with a sense of responsibility could argue with the fact that the punishment (if proven guilty re the tax case) should be in line with the crime and should be in line with previous punishments handed down.

The trouble of course is that the ‘unholy trinity’ of the scottish football authorities, the Scottish media and the majority of the Scottish public cannot dismiss their own prejudice, and cannot disguise their love of an anti Catholic club. If anyone is considering that the clamour to have the shamed and sectarian infested club that is RFC remain within the SPL is for the betterment of the Scottish game they are badly mistaken.

Indeed, if they do escape with a paltry sentence, the aforementioned unholy trinity will shamelessly celebrate what they will see as a victory for them, and a slap in the face for Celtic, the team who suffered most through the cheating.

If the boot was on the other foot and it was Celtic FC in this position, the rags and airwaves would be full of comment on why the punishment needed to be the most severe available, because in essence Celtic fc had cheated their way to titles and had cost other clubs revenue through entering UEFA competitons and collecting SPL prize monies unfairly, and they would be right.

There are a number of people questioning as to why Celtic have made no comment as yet. I myself have asked the same. I am thinking that perhaps Celtic await the tax case outcome, which makes Rangers’ guilt undisputable. Perhaps that will be the time Celtic will make some form of representation to the powers that be to indicate they shall not accept anything other than a decision that sends out a message that cheating will meet with the most severe measures.

A precedent cannot be set by sending out a message that cheating carries a lenient sentence.

  14. Evening everyone,

Can anyone recommend a Celtic friendly pub in Oxfordshire to watch the game tomorrow? Just moved down here because of work and can’t stand watching it in the house. Thanks, hail hail!

  15. Tom,

that was a bad situation and there was no excuse for it. Hopefully there will be no mud covered hills at Hampden next week!

I think the real reason for the callers’ complaints tonight was that the Celtic buses were supposedly going to be allowed into the car park but theirs weren’t!

There have been many players who failed at a new club, after being transferred for big money.

The weight of the expectancy from the fans proving too much.

I wonder how the Swedish boy will carry his name on his jersey at Ibrox?
