Blood on the brogues

The resignation of Charles Green from his post as Rangers International chief executive last month was more curious for what it wasn’t – a resignation from the board.  Green retained his position as a director of the club.  This was always likely to have consequences.

BBC report this morning that club chairman, Malcolm Murray, who media outlets loyal to Green reported innuendo against earlier this year, in what was viewed as an attempt to discredit and ultimately remove him, yesterday lost a vote of confidence at a board meeting.

I am certain the vote of confidence was called by Murray himself after he informed the board, including Charles Green, of how he intends to deal with the important matters surrounding the club at this time.  In particular, what he plans to do with information received from Pinsent Masons and forensic accountants from Deloitte.  The investigation underway by Pinsents and Deloittes is only taking place at the insistence of Murray.

The innuendo against Murray was inappropriate and part of a dirty tricks campaign against the man by those who do not have Rangers best interests at heart [the irony is searing].  The normal reaction to losing a vote of confidence is to resign and let your opponents deal with the consequences of their actions.  Murray may feel he has done all he can for the club (or company, if that is how some would like to start calling the entity now). Those who invested in Craig Whyte’s various claims last month will enormously encouraged.

On Friday I’ll be joined by Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and Paul McConville at the Columba Club, Blantyre, for what is certain to be an enjoyable Question and Answer event.  Tickets, £5 each, for the Columba Charitable Fund, are available at the door.  I’m really looking forward to it.  See you there.

Then please explain to me why the Emergency Powers (No. 362) order imposed by de Valera’s government was not applied without favour to those who ‘deserted’ to fight fascism as opposed those who just crossed the Irish Sea and whose wage poke was twice that of those who faced the bomb and the German bullets.

No Nazi atrocities were not widely known, not until the camps started to get liberated.

The Free State media was heavily censored during the war and no reporting would have been allowed that spoke of atrocities by one side or the other.

These are historical facts. You’re Uncle deserted his army and turned his back on his people. You’re entitled to call him a hero, to me, he was a deserter.

Why send the children of those who wished to oppose an Nazi Europe, and some who died in the fight, to the Industrial Schools… to the laundries?

By the way mate, America was more likely to invade than either the UK or Germany.

But even the USA was not that stupid in that war to breach ‘neutrality’.

I’ve seen the same argument used about a guy who deserted from the British Army to join the International Brigade.

  7. A stor mo chroi – a State of National Emergency was declared during WW2. That was not the case during the Spanish civil war. However, any person who abandoned their post is a deserter regardless of circumstance.

Do you have any idea of how many Irishmen actually volunteered to go to war against the Axis Powers?

Pro Rata how did it ever compare with all other nationalities? Especially so those of all neutral nations?

How many Irishmen from the ‘Free State’ fought compared to Irishmen from the ‘Occupied Six Counties’?

  9. Ernie – That guy was also a deserter. Did he receive a pardon from the British State ?

  13. Brussels: A football agent is

    challenging UEFA’s financial fair play

    (FFP) rules at the European

    Commission because of the likely

impact they will have on his income,

    AFP learnt on Tuesday.

    Belgian agent Daniel Striani released

a statement via his lawyer, Jean-

Louis Dupont, in which he claims that

the rules will lead to restrictions in

terms of investment, will diminish the

number of player transfers that take

place and will also bring down the

    revenues of player agents.

“This rule also impacts upon the right

to free movement of capital (of club

owners), to free movement of workers

(players and clubs) and to the free

    availability of services (player

    agents),” added the statement, seen

    by AFP.

    Striani’s representative Dupont rose

to prominence as the lawyer who

    acted for Jean-Marc Bosman, who

    successfully challenged football’s

transfer rules at the European Court

in 1995 on the basis of restraint of

    trade.

    The Bosman ruling allowed players

over the age of 24 to switch clubs

without a transfer fee at the end of

    their contracts, and also ended

    national league limits on foreign

    players from other European Union

    countries.

Striani told Belgian newspaper Le Soir

on Tuesday that “while the aim of

financial fair play is without doubt

    commendable, it’s effects are harmful.

I can’t see why salaries should be

limited and why we would prevent

investors from putting money into a

    club.”

    UEFA president Michel Platini wanted

to introduce FFP as a way of forcing

clubs to balance their books if they

want to take part in the Champions

    League or Europa League.

    These clubs cannot spend more

money than they make, according to

    UEFA, European football’s governing

    body.

“In other words, this rule prohibits

the owner of a club from injecting his

own funds into his own club in order

to help it grow,” explained Dupont.

UEFA have responded by saying that

    “the European Commission, the

    European parliament, the clubs, the

leagues and the Players Union have

all given their total support to

    financial fair play.

“UEFA believes that financial fair play

is entirely in line with European law,”

    they added in a statement.

Who would in their right mind desert to join ‘bomber command’ – Irishmen did, and Irish volunteers were allowed to pick their postings, and Irishmen were never scared of the battle of the day and they did what they believed in their hearts was the right thing to do. And oh so many died and don’t post today on CQN.
