Bobby and Tommy, men with established priorities

412

You are going to read lots about Tommy Burns, who we lost 10 years ago today, and Bobby Murdoch, the first of the Lions to go, on this date in 2001, so I’ll share an observation on both.

Tommy’s coffin was carried into the church by Ally McCoist and Walter Smith.  Tommy had lots of friends, former team-mates and players, as well as a large family.  There was no shortage of candidates to carry the man’s mortal remains, but in extending the invitation to Walter Smith and Ally McCoist, he left you and me something to live up to.

There can be few more public expressions of an intimate invitation.  How well do you and I reach across the city to others?  I have considered that question, on and off, for almost 10 years.

The only time I met Bobby Murdoch he went straight to asking me what I did for a living.  Then he talked about his wife, Kathleen, and her job.  There were a dozen others in the room, nine of whom were Lisbon Lions, but that was what Bobby wanted to talk about.  His priorities were well established.

  1. Morning, Champs.

Firstly, good news re. Lionsroar67. Prayers now for a speedy and full recovery.

Secondly, not much I can add about the Res.12 news, but the Terriers who wouldn’t let go, refused to be deterred and just kept nipping away will probably never get the reward they deserve, but they do deserve some recognition once this has come to a conclusion. Hopefully, something appropriate can be done to express our gratitude properly.

Not getting my hopes up about what the outcome of the SFA charges will be, but if the governance of the game here in Scotland becomes ‘fit for purpose’ then that at least will be an improvement on what we have seen thus far.

Away to put the kettle on and wait for Hebcelt’s news now ?

Got it. Child abuse at Ibrox and Sevco saying that happened at the time of another club. Think we will be seeing more of this same club when suits, different club when it doesn’t.

  3. Good morning good ghuys from a dry and sunny North Glasgow

On the Sevco same club/ different club when is anyone in a position of power going to call this lot out???? I know never I suppose.

By the way that’s a disgusting way for them to treat an abuse victim, politics aside.

Anyway 3 more sleeps as Jobo would say, until our bhoys have a chance to make history.

Gary, I am not sure where this has come from but this very approach has been a topic of conversation between myself and Auldheid for some weeks now.

Uefa can’t possibly cast a beady eye over every day to day action of all the clubs that come under its umbrella and if something goes seriously amiss then they can only RE act sometimes well after the event.

So, how do they ensure that there is onging vigilance? For sometime it has been apparent to those who have taken an interest in the political and managerial tactics adopted by Nyon that where there is a rogue club they expect that club to be dealt with summarily by the national FA.

UEFA themselves have to ratify National Association decisions and they will independently vet submissions, but in doing so it is not only the clubs who are under scrutiny but the standards and consistency applied by the national associations as wel lwhich are uncer consideration.

Just as clubs have to treat one another with respect and fair play, so National Associations are expected to apply the UEFA rules fairly and consistently across the European board.

If that is not happening and if UEFA think that a National Association is failing in its duties to the wider football community, then their sanction is to threaten the association, downgrade their status and, by their repeated failure, omit all that association’s teams from European Competition.

Every team in the SPFL gained £400k from Celtic’s participation in the Champion’s League last year. For many that is the difference between night and day, profit and loss.

I have said before, that unlike the days of the Murray era where all clubs were under the HBOS yolk, today many many clubs are professionally run, balance their books and strive to be run very properly.

The people that manage their businesses will not want to see such revenue denied them each year because of idiot management and a failure to comply with good governance rules to protect one team — any team.

That doesn’t mean to say there can’t be a fudge or a business fix when it comes to sanctions. Far from it. But sanctions and ongoing scrutiny there must be or you get UEFA breathing down your neck.

The point of Res 12 was to ensure that the SFA failings were brought to light, that their processes be investigated and critiqued, and if found wanting then corrected and changes made to ensure that such failures could never happen again.

If, along the way, it was proven that RFC had cheated, lied and deceived the governing bodies and had acted against the rules of football then they too should be sanctioned.

I think what we are seeing is the first objective being achieved – slowly perhaps, even too slowly, but achieved nonetheless.

The fudge may come in the second part of the exercise but that truly depends on what lessons have been learned in the past and what appetitie exists within the clubs at the current time for proper governance as opposed the temporary ecomomic expediency of having a “strong Rangers” visit twice a year.

Strangely, it is the unquestioning loyalty of may RFC fans that may be the strongest card here because if the other clubs do want proper governance and at the same time know that RFC fans will turn up no matter what, then there should be no reason at all to fear handing down proper and merited sanctions in fear of so called financial Armageddon.

That card has been played (badly) and found to be part of a very poor losing hand.

Of course, if the Sevco board continue to make a mess of their business dealings in the way that they have done over the last few years, then the football rules will be irrelevant as the normal business and solvency laws will eventually apply whether football likes it or not.

  7. Not the news I would have wanted to read about events at Ibrox, in fact, any news would have been preferable to this – even good news for them.

Vile and disgusting, and should never be used to ‘point-score’. Confident that we won’t see anything like that here today.

    Have a good day Bhoys.

  8. Bateen Bhoy

I have similar sentiments but I do not believe that either DD or HebCelt indulged in any gloating over this “news”. They have merely presented it as, additonaly to being a tragic occurence for the victim(s), it is an incovenience for the coherence of the “same club” myth.

I am confident that most fans on here, who have shown distaste at the vile antics of those sevcoites who see sex abuse as a weapon to attack our club or, even more sickeningly, as an issue that is more prevalent amongst Celts, Catholics or whatever.

To my mind, all 3 clubs, ours and the 2 versions of Rangers, have failed in their handling of sex abuse within their boy’s club and youth coaching ranks. Even by the standards of their time, they were inadequately handled and we still have to address the shame of allowing Torbett back into club functions after we knew of his activities. This shame will be coming to trial soon too.

So I want to hear no gloating over this because young men were severely damaged and, in at least one case, driven to suicide by this evil being visited upon them.

The “news” about the Ibrox youth coach must be acknowledged. But it must be primarily acknowledged as a tragedy for the victim(s) concerned and never as a weapon for retaliation. I know we have had to suffer people from the Ibrox side aiming such poisoned barbs, but we would hate to descend to that level, would we not?

We have issues to address on our side yet and, on this issue, I agree with the sentiment that we should be concentrating on our own mess in our own history.

We acknowledge today’s news and we move on with our thoughts being in support of all the victims.

Ages ago I went through the hun European EBT games and sent letters and emails to all the teams that old Rangers either won or drew against.

  21. SFTB,

Well said, and if there’s any ambiguity at all in what I wrote, there was no suggestion whatsoever that anyone who mentioned the subject this morning had indulged in any point scoring. I’m happy to say that we’re better than that. ?

Jamesgang – email me on Hrvatskijim@gmail.com and i can give you some advice about the Istria area of Croatia that i know best. Hotels are of a very high standard and, apart from a couple of party islands, most places are quiet.

…..I wonder who has bought the history of the old Stewart regan Football Association, or will that be conveniently binned with the red handy requirement of us all moving on when the ither new guy starts?

I have not been to this hotel, but I found it a few years ago when searching for a romantic break in Croatia. It is a small Island, with no cars and a twenty minute water taxi ride to Dubrovnik. I plan to go one day.
