Bogus issues and a Good Old Celtic debate

1020

I’ve not spent a lot of time online this week (work sometimes creeps in) but can’t believe the amount of traction that notion that Sevco would somehow be able to acquire SFA membership of a dead club, with all associated benefits, but be in a position to dictate set terms on how past misdeeds of Rangers would be recorded.

This is a bogus debate which serves only to deflect from the more serious issues facing Sevco, namely, do they have circa £25m to pay their way this season?  If not, their pedantic views of disciplinary matters are moot, although they may be used as a principled excuse to fold a football club.

On more positive matters……….

Tony Hamilton asked me into the Celtic TV to discuss various issues surrounding the club.  We spoke about how recent events elsewhere have had a galvanising impact on supporters of Celtic and other clubs, where Celtic’s future should be.  I also gave a breakdown of what the death of Rangers would mean financially to Celtic, with or without Champions League group stage qualification, talked about how it would benefit the entire Scottish game if we found a new league to play in, and the great atmosphere we have at Celtic Park these days – which you can experience if you buy a season ticket, which you absolutely-without-a-doubt-should!

Do it now.  The video is below:

    Guten morgen.

No mission of me ditching the Sky.

Solitude the mara to watch the match. The game is generating quite a bit of excitement in the beautiful city of Belfast, particularly in the naughty north and the wild west, despite the big Celtic team playing Inter on the same day.

Dandered past Paddy’s McCourt’s pub earlier on there – they have brand new flags flying outside – Celtic,Cliftonville and Ireland…a beautiful site, must admit.

It sure does feel good to be a Tim.

Parkheadcumsalford- it’s well seen Paul Mcbride is in a better place, I expect he’d have sorted them out.

    It’s a disgrace.

What events have shown is that they need Celtic more than Celtic need them; I would ban them from all future media events- no interviews, no press conferences.

if Celtic need to get a message across we’ve got our very own Jeremy Paxman, Paul67 ;/)

  5. So the Daily Record didn’t cover the Rangers Tax Case in detailo because it is a buisness story and they can’t afford lawyers to explain the finer details to them. But they have suddenly found some loose change down the back of the common room sofa to pay lawyers to analyse (in detail) Neil Lennon’s tax affairs.

Anyone who buys that rag and quotes any part of it in an argument to belittle Celtic is no more a Celtic fan than Mo Johnston.

Interesting to note that Neil invested in a scheme arranged by others and didn’t completely misinterpret tax advice he sought in order to set up his own shady tax avoidance scheme.

The purpose of the scheme though was to avoid paying tax.

That’s maybe worth remembering the next time someone on here is raising funds for a life saving operation or the like.

  8. SO Lenny lost £120 K by investing his own money in a stupid scheme and might, possible, maybe, could have to pay £36K in legal costs?

I know people who lost the same amount in the value of their houses recently.

    What a pathetic story.

Wonder why they would try and link Celtic’s manager with a dodgy tax scheme?

Used to be we’d see these stories just before a big game for Celtic. Now we see them just before yet more real bad news for SEVCO is about to hit.

The Robbie Savage tweets are a nice touch too. He’s mates with Chick Green. That’s all you need to know.

  9. Maybe I have a twisted idea of things but wouldn’t it be great that if indeed Sevco receive their cheats license for tomorrows game and it went ahead and then they got stuffed by Brechin, a kinda poetic justice kick in the hootenannys for them…

Just an early morning Starry thought!

Tax avoidance is a thorny issue

Your comment has merit tho ..I expect the DR now to publish details of the multiplicity of tax avoidance schemes and investors that they have info on

They wouldnt just be wanting impugn NL would they

  11. Ernie – Lenny should not have been doing it, from a moral point of view. He got his fingers burned. I have no sympathy for him. But once again media double standards are all over this.

Not one Scottish journo has mentioned Walter Smith receiving payments from Rangers while he was an employee at another club.

For example, I came across this gem of a comment this morning (note the date)……

Speculation! Speculation! Speculation! We appreciate wee bitter Hoopy are praying very hard but when you pray for the downfall of others God in fact will punish YOU!

Rangers will win the tax tribunal I have no doubt but until the verdict is delivered wee Hoopy will keep praying and wishing but it will all be to no avail.

Our incredible football manager ALLY McCOIST has ALREADY opened up a 10 GAP over Celtic and ALLY will make sure that GAP will grow and whilst we are walking all over poor wee Celtic on the pitch our esteemed leader Craig Whyte will be put the business side of our wonderful club on to a solid footing.

On the 28th of November RANGERS will be 13+ points clear of Celtic and on a solid financial footing.

The future is bright the future is ORANGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IN ALLY & CRAIG WE TRUST.

    See my post at 9.15!!!!

My reaction to the story was one of disgust at the way it was reported but also at Lennys behaviour.

I must confess my Left Wingedness is making it increasingly difficult to justify the crap that goes on in football – not least the vast transfer of working people’s wages to footballers, their agents and well paid company directors.

It’s why I have a complete downer on the EPL, but I will admit to letting the heart rule the head when it comes to Celtic at times!!

  21. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to minimise your tax – doesn’t anyone on here have an ISA?

Paying tax is a pain. You work nearly half the year in the UK now before you start earning for yourself and your family, and then you watch the government largely waste your hard-earned cash.

There is nothing inherently “moral” about the government collecting tax, indeed there is a strong argument that the economy improves and freedom is maximised the less tax the government collects.

Nonetheless, paying tax is part of the contract we have as citizens: we benefit from the considerable benefits of living in the UK, and these come at a price. Our government is composed of democratically elected men and women who serve at the discretion of the tax payers, therefore we do not hand over taxes to a tyrannical regime.

What Neil did is what anyone would do: seek out a legal investment scheme which maximises his money for him and his family.

Comparisons with RFC are fatuous, as I suspect HRC believe they knowingly operated a scheme outwith the rules of the land.

Unless you are a multi millionaire you most certainly have not. If you are an ordinary working chap you will have given permission for the government to redistribute part of your tax take to a charity.

If you are a big business or wealthy individual you will use gift aid very differently and use it as a tax write off.

    I’m away……..

  23. Ernie – I completely agree. People with plenty of money to go around should not be trying to make even more by actively seeking to avoid paying tax. If Neil did take part in a scheme to save himself £400k then he should be ashamed of that regardless of whether he actually saved the money or lost his investment.

My gripe with the Record is that the biggest tax evasion story in Scottish history has been completely overlooked by them yet they can find time to devote a front page to a failed tax scheme simply because one of its participants was Neil Lennon. It’s like overlooking the results of a general election to cover a community council meeting.

Surprised the Daily Record has taken so long to write up this story. At least 4 weeks ago, maybe longer, this story was widely reported in the financial press I posted it on CQN suggesting that the MSM would be on to it and use it against Neil/Celtic.

The real story here is that Neil was poorly served personally and that the Daily Record again demonstrates that it has no qualms in dishing dirt on anything Celtic. Related whilst operating double standards protecting friends.

How much more crap do we need to take from the rag that is the DR. We’ve had to put up with the ridiculing of McCann Janssen and Venglos, the complete lack of respect to O’Neill and Burns, the Thugs and thieves stitch up and worst of all, the demonisation of Neil Lennon. And still it goes on. They never let up. I’ll say one thing for the huns..they dont hesitate to ban papers and TV stations for the least thing.

The DR and its mouthpiece Clyde are dangerous. They will stop at nothing as they create a headline which the neanderthal bigots buy into, and take it further.

I’ve got a close friend who supports sevco. He’s a sensible level headed guy but he told me months ago that he despised Lennon. When I asked for his valid reasons, the ones which make him different from McCoist, Fergie, Souness, Butcher, Jim McLean etc..the reply I got was ‘well he’s never out of the papers for causing trouble’. That said it all for me.
