Bolingoli, Elyounoussi and Alan Thompson

409

BT Sport had Alan Thompson on at the weekend previewing the Cup Final and I was reminiscing about him.  When he played, I wrote he was the most influential Celtic midfielder since the Lisbon Lions.  Not the most talented, McStay and Collins among others could claim to be more gifted, by Thompson pushed Celtic into places none of the others managed.

His goals in Europe and against Rangers are legend, and his assists record is outstanding, but despite my complete adoration of the player, he had a clear drawback.  Whenever he was absent through injury, it took weeks in the first team before he looked moderately competent.  So much of his game was about sheer physical effort that anything below 100% fitness made him ineffective.

This week Boli Bolingoli, Mohamed Elyounoussi, Leigh Griffiths, Jonny Hayes and Mikey Johnston started games for the first time after injury.  Bolingoli (that corner kick!) and Elyounoussi both reminded me of Alan Thompson returning from injury.  We should cut them some slack as they build fitness.

The same cannot be said for Leigh Griffiths, who looks as sharp as a tack.  He will benefit from 90 minutes last night but he is ready to lead the line, if required.

Scott Robertson looked the part, especially early on, when Celtic had more shape than they did at the end of the game.  Delighted too that Karamoko Dembele got his first outing of the season.  He was not able to contribute much but he is a lad we should have plans to develop into a first team player.

Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the raffle for Tom Rogic’s signed shirt for the Celtic FC Foundation’s Christmas appeal. It is humbling to see Celtic fans in action like this.  The winner has been informed by email – so check your inbox!

  1. The sheer hypocrisy sometimes on here is staggering at times.Scream from the rooftops, that the Catalan peoples, the Palestinian peoples, the occupied 6 counties, should have their freedom, from ruling parties they want no part of,yet in their own country of residence, they will happily suck it up.

    Mind boggling.

  2. No matter my opinion: With a landslide of seats and the greatest percentage of the vote, The SNP are certainly not an irrelevance in Scotland.

  3. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

Palestine and the six counties are very different cases from Catalan which I have never commented on.

But don’t let the facts get in the road of a good lie eh

  4. If you ever want a meaningful labour vote then vote SNP get independence then when Scotland has its own parliament then you have a chance of a labour government that can work directly for Scotland. It’s not rocket science.

    Green Pinata,

They have only one policy which will not be implemented, how is that strategy relevant to governing the country in the current conditions.

They have returned funds to Westminster every year they were in power, that led to reduced budgets the following year.

They set out to make the Scottish angrier with Westminster by underinvesting in Scottish services and blaming Westminster for their own failures.

Tartan Tory’s then and tartan Tory’s now

    I agree with you 100%.

I am convinced, however its the remainder of the Scottish electorate that needs to share our view.

  7. Referendumb,???????,

Yes very good. The only dumb thing I noticed during the elections, was the amount of voters, still voting for the clapped out, totally irrelevant, shambles, that has now become the Labour Party. So bad, that we could wait decades to ever see any kind of mild recovery. In the meantime,we will all have to suffer for their incompetence by having Tory rule thrust upon us for decades to come. The only way back is for a Scottish Labour Party,in an Independent Scotland going to to toe with the SNP.Thats what a “Referendumb”,if won, will bring.

  8. I voted Labour.

However, I am not against Scotland becoming independent.

My only condition is that we do not have the English queen as our head of state.

    Or any of her siblings.

Aye dumb, never a chance of it becoming reality. Yet here we are with usual deluded trying to convince that it might happen.

Live in your deluded reality but don’t expect any sympathy for failed strategies flog yer dead horse till yer heart is content.

  11. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

An Tearmann, GG and all thank you very much for your marvellous memories of first going to see our team and of cars driven at the time. Some might say a less complicated and more enjoyable time overall.

I was in tears when i wan’t allowed to go to the 1970 Scottish cup final as it would be too busy but my 12 year old brother got to go with my dad and one of my uncles. its the angriest I ever saw my dad after a game when he came home due to Bobby Davidson’s referreeing of that game.

My first cup final was the 1971 league cup final which as an 8 year old used to us winning things came as a real shock. However the Scottish cup final 6 months later , was a fantastic experience .

  12. Greenpinta,,

“I am convinced it’s the remainder of the electorate that has to share our view”,and vote for who?.Dear God,were you oblivious to what happened on Thursday?.The Labour Party virtually died. One MP in a country not too long ago, that boasted 50.I would love nothing better than to see a strong ,vibrant ,Scottish Labour Party in power,in an Independent Scotland.Answerable to the people of Scotland only.IMHO that is the only way forward. The British Labour Party, that I used to love,is gone.Be prepared for decades of Tory rule.

  14. ROD STEWART .

Occasionally saw him making half decent affirmative attempts ( in London ) at answering that Can White Men Sing The Blues question . He was an Arsenal supporter then – I didn’t give a fig who he supported -I still don’t .

He was the recipient of some entertainingly bitchy oh -You’ve Let us Down – You’re not what we thought you were . how very dare you Vituperation from the NME .( something that applies to fitba players too ! )

” We see that Rod Stewart has announced his death via the execrable -Atlantic Crossing LP . Much less This Old Heart Of Mine , Much more This Old Bank Account of Mine .”

  15. IMH(Humble)O the Celtic support as a whole do more and have done more to promote our club than any individual is ever capable of.

As for the politics. Regardless of which party is in power. No meaningful change to the betterment of the masses is possible in this current political set up. It’s working exactly as it was intended to. There needs to be discussion around an alternative to the complete garbage we get served up government after government where the wealth inequality gets worse year on year.

In short, the current political system needs to go.

    ” Answerable to the people ” .

Like in referendums and general elections.

Where you vote , a decision is arrived at and the result honoured.

As opposed to mob rule where the will of the people is ignored , like it has been in Parliament for the last three years .

Till the Parliamentary mob who considered that they were not answerable to the people got their bahookies kicked by the people they were duty bound to represent.

    Oh aye.

    “Answerable to the people ”

    Democracy .

    Now , Boris.

Sort out that pillar of privilege and undemocratic power.

    The House of Lords.

The Tories won this election because of Brexit.

They won’t be able to do that again.

So I wouldn’t be so pessimistic about the future.
