Bolingoli, Elyounoussi and Alan Thompson

409

BT Sport had Alan Thompson on at the weekend previewing the Cup Final and I was reminiscing about him.  When he played, I wrote he was the most influential Celtic midfielder since the Lisbon Lions.  Not the most talented, McStay and Collins among others could claim to be more gifted, by Thompson pushed Celtic into places none of the others managed.

His goals in Europe and against Rangers are legend, and his assists record is outstanding, but despite my complete adoration of the player, he had a clear drawback.  Whenever he was absent through injury, it took weeks in the first team before he looked moderately competent.  So much of his game was about sheer physical effort that anything below 100% fitness made him ineffective.

This week Boli Bolingoli, Mohamed Elyounoussi, Leigh Griffiths, Jonny Hayes and Mikey Johnston started games for the first time after injury.  Bolingoli (that corner kick!) and Elyounoussi both reminded me of Alan Thompson returning from injury.  We should cut them some slack as they build fitness.

The same cannot be said for Leigh Griffiths, who looks as sharp as a tack.  He will benefit from 90 minutes last night but he is ready to lead the line, if required.

Scott Robertson looked the part, especially early on, when Celtic had more shape than they did at the end of the game.  Delighted too that Karamoko Dembele got his first outing of the season.  He was not able to contribute much but he is a lad we should have plans to develop into a first team player.

Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the raffle for Tom Rogic’s signed shirt for the Celtic FC Foundation’s Christmas appeal. It is humbling to see Celtic fans in action like this.  The winner has been informed by email – so check your inbox!

Not quite sure when the SCE qualification in Arithmetic was abandoned as part of the curriculum, but I agree that it has been a disaster. Not caused by the SNP, but unlikely ever to be addressed by them or the educationalists at ScotQual or whatever the Scottish Education department is called now.

    If you can’t count…… you don’t count

When I moved to England in 70 they couldn’t believe I had an O level in arithmetic as it was just part of their maths exam.

I told them that the point of arithmetic is to show you can do the basics but importantly get the answer right.

EC open borders have created oppression.

Bombing children leaving a concert is oppressive.

Knifing people in the streets is oppressive.

Funny thing was gene, you could not do a Higher examination in Arithmetic.

Employers in Scotland used to advertise for qualifications in English/Maths or Arithmetic.

If numeracy is/was important that qualification said you knew something about numbers.

    I got a ‘A’ for my Maths ‘O’ level and a ‘C’ for arithmetic 😱

If you want to learn to count, play darts 😉

  6. GENE, a number of my school-mates from 50 years ago live in England or further afield. A large number of them are enthusiastic Nats. They actually believe Salmond and the Nats are ‘socially progressive’ and truly invested in all that pretendy virtue-signalling. They forget why they were forced out of Scotland in the first place.

I don’t relish debates with Nats because what Orwell said about them in the 1940s is still true today: ‘You can demonstrate the truth to a nationalist step by step but he will never accept it.’

  7. When being brought up in Coatbridge Coatdyke the border with Airdrie, was viewed as the metaphorical thin dividing line between Genius and Insanity,,,,,Coatbridge obviously being the Genius component.

Anyway here’s a modern day picture of a Coatdyke Ice Cream van…..Love the marketing slogan under the window!!!!

  8. Maths, Arithmetic.

In 1976 I got 100% for Arithmetic. In 1977 I got 99% for Maths higher – I swapped my x and y coordinates on one answer. Just saying.

Why do Americans call it “math” as in “You do the Math”. Arithmetic is singular as it is one part of the plural which is Mathematics; Calculus, Trigonometry, Geometry being some of the others.

If they said, “you do the Arithmetic” then that would be correct IMO.

The encouraging thing about today’s blog is that bhoys are contributing. I was starting to wonder if this blog was on its last legs👏👏

  10. Hearts 1-0 down at home to St J. Don’t want to tempt fate but i think this Stendl thing is going to blow up. Recruitment looks like a real shambles.

  11. Absolutely true statement

I passed my O level arithmetic whilst still at primary school ( Primary 7 St Margaret’s Cowie)

    So

How would the U.K. Look if the actual votes had been on proportional representation? Instead of first past post situation whereby boundaries are manipulated to suit ?

Would have been a long way from a majority Tory government (288 seats)

With Lib Dems the biggest winner, Labour would also have gained 14 seats

SNP would be 24 seats less

As the Edinburgh Huns lose 😂

If we had PR people may have voted differently so you can’t just apply it to a previous result – but I would support it and did do on that other referendum in 2010?

    =========================================================

    Sadly no.

The enemy has been permitted to enter the stockade.

Tragically second generations have been taught to hate us and attack us and we have been prevented from removing their hate preachers by guess who ?

    Brussels.

Controlling our borders has an excellent chance of reducing the number of people being permitted to enter our country whose intention is to harm us.

The problem has not been eliminated but hopefully it will be reduced.

  14. Macjay

Most of the guys likely to carry out knifings or bombings are 100% born & bred Brits. Can’t see how Brexit is going to change that.

Anyway it’s game on now Boris will trigger the legal bit and some day in January ye will legally be out.

However that is only the start of it, the negotiations will only start around the 1st March and are likely to take 2 years, so this whole thing will drag on for quite a bit yet.

  15. FRitzsong I think you will find that various economic powerhouses took apart the SNP costing to say that there would be greater austerity under an independent Scottish govt. probably the same billionaire sponsored groups that told you there would be £359 million more for the NHS which will now be sold off first to Boris mates who will then flick it of to the US. Scotland’s whisky industry alone, which is nit registered as Scottish business is bigger than New Zealand’s dairy which keeps us afloat. Tourism, wind power, hydro, not to mention the primary industries that export to England and Europe. Northbrits cower in your own fear if you want. There is a reason Boris and co don’t want to let you go free and it is not that they are worried about your food banks.

I suspect you might be in the same boat.

In what way is Brussels involved?

And when you refer to ‘us’, ‘we’ and ‘our’, who are you referring to? I thought you lived in Australia.

  17. I’m Scottish. I’m too poor and too stupid to understand what the usual suspects are telling me when it comes to independence for my country. I know, however, that I must retreat to the back of the bus where I belong. Long may I bow to your superior intellects.

    No doubt.

And that might be relevant if there was any equivalence between the way Scotland and Ireland came to be part of the UK or how their populations were treated whilst part of the UK

    But there is no equivalence.

You have to make allowance for the need for grievance and resentment which sustains the nationalist mindset. Hence the ‘poor and stupid’ line. You get the same from Brexiteers. Essentially it’s the same outlook.

  23. Hail Hail from Gran Canaria just catching up on CQN and it seems Rod the Tim votes Tory giving it well done Boris ffs ! Rod will be very welcome in the Celtic boardroom !
