Bolingoli, the shirt doesn’t fit.

306

I get the wisdom in including Olivier Ntcham i and Boli Bolingoli in the training camp. The former may yet have a role to play (outside his own box) at the club, Bolingoli, though, can only be there to maintain his fitness ahead of a move.

Least season’s calamitous events started with Boli giving the First Minister permission to interrupt our season.  He was lucky we didn’t lose the league by a small margin attributable to him. The shirt doesn’t fit.

In recent season (since BR) we have generally brought in our big money signings early in the window.

Edouard, Ntcham, Jullien, Boli, Barkas were all late June/early July. Dembele arrived at the end of June, too.

Only Sinclair was brought in quite late, albeit still in the middle of our CL qualifying.

We have picked up loans quite late. Loans by their nature may tend to be more last minute as the loaning club were unable to punt them permanently.

Still, given the rebuild required, we would hope that we are not going to use loans as our primary means of improving the team.

In sum, not too unfair to be worried by our lack of movement in the transfer market.

    A wee aside

I have been doing a lot of family tree research, most interesting is my english grandfathers branch, as his brother had did a lot of the paper trail hard documents way back in the 70’s so I had a lot to go on.

The family was in Whitehaven Cumbria, for a few hundred years, and I was most taken aback to find these very proper , but poor , and god fearing working class people were the descendents of a proper Irish grandfather.

I also knew , he had cousins in Oz and NZ, but never knew why.

So much to my suprise I found 2 reasons.

My grandas own granny had married again in the 1850s and emigrated with her new man to NZ, leaving the kids behind with other relatives, jeese oh, how do you.

Next up, a great aunt of his, was put on a convict ship and sent to Oz also in the 1850’s.

I was just hoping to find an ancestor had played for Celtic but no joy.

The difference though, they would not be allowed to RAM it down the English viewing public’s throat, every minute, of every day, on almost every tv broadcast.

We would get a quick mention down there and nothing else

.. and, like you, I would also advocate patience.

    Just one point though …

We know we can’t acquire players in June for a CL group campaign that may or may not happen (and we won’t know until late August).

But we should should have a squad in place & ready for the qualifiers.

Posted on this a while back.

We don’t make good use of the January windows as a launch pad for next season.

    Get pre-contracts in place.

In some cases pay the fee for an early release six months before contract end.

And then don’t buy ANYONE before CL group status clarified.

If it’s Europa League – either go with what we have or add a solid type or two.

If CL – buy a cherry on top.

Edouard joined Celtic on 31 August

Ntcham joined 12 July a week before our first CL qualifier

    Barkas joined on 31 July

Eddie apart, I don’t think the records of the players you mentioned support an argument for getting players in early. I’d much rather wait than sign another bolingoli or a barkas

  11. Regardless of the scores in our pre season games, they count for nowt.

Eddy signed permanently on 15 June. The other signings were all July as well. The point I was making is that it has invariably not been August or September for our bigger money signings.

As for holding off to buy, unsure what difference a month makes in context of scouting players.

More fundamentally, we haven’t held off to sign players late in the window, so unsure why in a season of pressing need for signings we’d adopt that approach now.

  14. ROLLING_STONE on 7TH JULY 2021 2:16 PM

Eddy signed permanently on 15 June.

The deal that brought Eddie to Celtic, which included the provision for a permanent deal was signed on 31 August.

As for holding off to buy, unsure what difference a month makes in context of scouting players.

The issue isn’t scouting players, it’s what players are available on the market. You cut down the number of players you might buy if you insist on an early transfer and you also, generally, pay more.

  15. Just to clarify re:Eddie, we got him on loan with an option to buy… The last day before the option run out was15-June…

Yes, I’d expect loan deals to happen more towards the end of the window as clubs may try and get rid of a player and, if unsuccessful, loan them.

‘The issue isn’t scouting players, it’s what players are available on the market. You cut down the number of players you might buy if you insist on an early transfer and you also, generally, pay more’

I think this is pure speculation really. Plus, I disagree. Wait until the last minute and teams realise you are desperate and bump the price up.

Plus (and more fundamentally), the majority of our bigger signings were in June or July, not August and September, so we must have been paying a premium then and cutting down on our options of who we could sign?

  21. ROLLING_STONE on 7TH JULY 2021 2:34 PM

I think this is pure speculation really

It isn’t, it’s based on the most basic market forces.

The the short and medium term goals for Celtic go way beyond a CL qualifier in two weeks time. It seems to be universally agreed that we need a major rebuild of the squad in order to do what is absolutely necessary, mount a serious challenge in the league. That isn’t achieved by paying over the odds for players early in the window and potentially missing out on better players who’s clubs are unwilling to sell before they can achieve maximum value in the market

We’re going to have to sell players in the window to be able to buy replacements and fund new first teamers. Do we sell them early and take a hit on the price which means we buy poorer players?

  22. Quadrophenian

“For me, it’s possible to look forward to seeing Celtic play (esp at the start of a season) welcome in some young gambols AND register how underwhelmed I am the club’s penchant for cheap cross-border raiding that has yielded too few first-teamers as a methodology for squad improvement (Afolabi, Connell, O’Connor, Okoflex etc) ie; we acquire these guys then don’t break em into the firsts. ”

    ————————-

    Of course it is.

    However………

There is always a high percentage of churn in recruitment of Youth players (TBB has indicated how hard it is to become a pro football player, and it is very hard to break into a Celtic first team squad with up to 20 Internationalists. I feel particularly sorry for those who we got in cross border raids in the last 2 years because the pressure of the 10, the Covid abandonment of Reserve Development leagues and the difficulty in ensuring that loaned out players get picked by their manager, even if they are good enough, all led to severe handicaps in developing the careers of Harper, OkoFlex, Afolabi and Karamoko Dembele. We definately let them down but it was not all due to factors in our control.

The loss of players to Bayern Munich is hte reverse side of this. The rules allow for us to be predated by bigger clubs just as the Huns were for Billy Gilmour. Good luck to the lads who chose this route but they just made their transition harder as they will be battling with the best recruited from all over Europe but, once they leave, they are not Celtic players anymore and of no interest to me.

You played a bit fast and loose with the Eddy signing date but I satnd by my point that a lot of our more competitive targets are recruited later because they have more clubs chasing them.

Off to watch the Celtic Pass now- remember everyone – this is a reserve team playing a pre-season training match-
