Bolstering the attack quickish

769

With 26 career goals, 25 of which came in a Dundee United shirt, £1.5m sounds a tad generous for Nadir Ciftci.  Celtic’s earlier offer of £900k sounds more like the mark but Wigan have validated United’s target price with a deal with meets their requirements, if not that of the player’s.

Is he a player to improve Celtic?  Quite possibly, he’ll bring something we don’t have at the moment – a sticky out ball – but it’s a big ask to expect him to step up to Champions League levels.  Signing that level of player might take Champions League money, but we’ll need to get there first, which is why we need to bolster the attack quickish.

Two years ago we talked about the number of senior games a good player is able to make before he’s noticed by those to rich and lazy to do as much low-level research Celtic must do to unearth a gem.

Victor Wanyama made 51 appearances before becoming a Celtic player, Virgil van Dijk made 62.  It’s likely both spent the bulk of those games without anyone paying much attention to them, Celtic’s scouts are likely to have been alerted when they have little more than a dozen or so games left at their previous clubs.

Ciftci’s made 67 senior appearances.  If he has what it takes, the world will know about it sooner rather than later.

There certainly was a 5 way agreement, and I seem to recall Celtic abstained, but the main point is that any Company has a Board and, if the shareholders are not happy with the strategy / direction of any Board, they can arrange an EGM and vote to replace the Board ……. as a shareholder in Celtic, I am delighted with our ‘progress’ as a Club and have noticed unwarranted PERSONAL agendas creeping into some CQN discussions……

“What I would like someone to explain to me is, why did DU accept an offer of £1,000,000 from Wigan, yet I understand we’re going to offer £1,300,000? That seems a bit Sevconomical to me!”

DU are under pressure from their fans. They were up in arms when we got zig and zag for nowt.

Stevie Thompson is telling the papers that they “won’t be bullied” because it’s what his fans want to hear. Celtic have a price and will stick to it.

Otherwise Ciftci will be there til Jan.

  3. 67heaven..,

“as a Club and have noticed unwarranted PERSONAL agendas creeping into some CQN discussions……”

As opposed to the personal agenda being followed by individuals on the board to simply increase the value of their personal stock at any cost to the club ?

The season before last ,I thought Ciftci would be a good buy for us,but last years *seemed to be out ran, out paced and out thought by a fitter ,quicker Ronny team.

I trust if we get him up to speed he could be an asset to us and will trust Ronny if that is who he lands with to make the best of him.

    * =imho.

Personally,I thought the season ran out on the whole Unt team.Ciftci played a belter against us in the defeat at Tannadice. After we got the draw in the cup up there, their whole season collapsed.

I think he is a player who will thrive at Celtic.

I agree with Canamalar that he will deserve everything he gets if found guilty.

Oh, you are right there ……. The SFA should have been challenged on the legality of the secrecy aspect, but not by Celtic …… By the Fraud Squad since, amongst other things, it denied other Clubs applying for membership by subversive / dubious / illegal? means….!!

I’m not saying I agree with our Board, but I get the impression they knew oldco were heading for liquidation and didn’t want to afford their hoarders a rallying call ……… Never disturb your enemy when they are destroying themselves…..

Personally, I feel we should have ‘gone for the jugular’ …… but then I’m a wee bit irrational when it comes to resisting those barstewards….

    Before the vote…

The 5 way agreement to my mind, with the limited knowledge that I have, overshadows everything that has ever happened at Celtic FC in my lifetime, and yet it appears to me that the majority of the support are bliss in the diluted glory and glory in the misfortune of their neighbours.

I don’t think that is what the club I support is about.

    Integrity?… Value?…Transparency?… Accountability?… Inclusiveness?…

The last time I spoke to Auldheid about the 5 way agreement he told me the ball was six inches from an open goal, that was 2 months ago.

Forget Rangers and their woes, that is their house which in which we are neither invited nor welcome, but yet we perpetually chose to focus on their woes as opposed our own shortcomings?

And we are often deflected from asking legitimate questions of concern as to the lack of club ambition under the banner of being antagonistic or dissident.

All I want to see Celtic do is play honest football and not disgrace the clubs purported ethos nor shame the intellect or compassion of the supporters.

  13. Turkeybhoy:

I’ve watched Celtic decline since the days of jock Stein, I’ve watched the abilities of Celtic strikers decline in parallel of the same time frame. I was playing football before either of those two you mention were even a sperm and an egg.

I was asked to play for the Police team of a country that borders Turkey only last week. I declined and they were not amused but I insisted that at 57 years of age I might die in the heat.

I know football mate, I’ve been playing it for 50 years, not talking about it.

As I said, I’m warming to the idea of Ciftci, but like you say, we could easily wait till Jan, and get him for practically hee-haw!

I cant disagree with your comments re. his actions v Dundee last season, I can only hope that if he comes to Celtic, he screws the bobbin a bit better than he has done so far, but, I think yellow and red cards could well be a regular feature of his time at Parkhead.

Ciftci – like most on here Im not wild with excitement

But a couple of things to consider

Last year when we went to Dundee only 2 or 3 of their players caught my attention

2 of them are currently playing for us and doing a good job the other is Ciftci ??

So if he can contribute as much as GMS and Armstrong then thats not a bad thing

The other thing I have begun to have faith in RD and who he wants – so if RD wants him !!!!

    67ECW

  18. 67heaven…,

When members of this board move on will you be following them out the door to support them in their next position ?

Personally I give the board credit when I think it is due however when people follow my arguments and it makes them uncomfortable, the accusations you make then become very common, maybe your not as convinced as you make yourself out to be hence attacking those who make you think rather than countering the argument. It does appear to be your fall back position to every discussion.

  20. Jonny the Tim,

If we sign him I expect his improved behaviour to be a condition of his transfer, remember he deliberately sunk his teeth into a player, now I understand the maxim of fighting tooth and nail for your team but I don’t expect any player to actually enact it.

The Griff had some behavioural problems which appear to have been dealt with and hopefully will not be repeated, if Cifti signs then we can hope for a similar response.

And yes I do expect the refs to run to form when dealing with players in the hoops that’s why we need to be cuter and biting people sort of draws attention, no ?

  21. Morning Paul

Kev J – get oot and enjoy :o)

As for Ciftci – I think he will do fine for us at any level of competition. Scored goals in English, Dutch and Turkish top leagues and has scored 9 international goals at U19 level.

He wants to come to Celtic and we want him to come to us. Game of poker at the moment. Who’ll blink first?

In any case, his Nadir is behind him and his Zenit is just ahead……

..but not until the group stages of the CL at the earliest :o)

To me it is all about the club, not the team per se, (if it was all about the team and glory I’d follow the huns of the 90’s, or Chelsea, or such) the club is the family, and the suits have a duty, an obligation, to uphold the ethos of the club and bond the family beyond disrepair.

And if they do that, I’ll buy a season ticket again, but if it is to embrace domestic mediocrity to optimise dividends and bonuses at the expense of their employees and ethos and ambitions of their supporters, then I’ll watch from afar and put my pennies into a deserving jar instead.
