Bolstering the attack quickish

769

With 26 career goals, 25 of which came in a Dundee United shirt, £1.5m sounds a tad generous for Nadir Ciftci.  Celtic’s earlier offer of £900k sounds more like the mark but Wigan have validated United’s target price with a deal with meets their requirements, if not that of the player’s.

Is he a player to improve Celtic?  Quite possibly, he’ll bring something we don’t have at the moment – a sticky out ball – but it’s a big ask to expect him to step up to Champions League levels.  Signing that level of player might take Champions League money, but we’ll need to get there first, which is why we need to bolster the attack quickish.

Two years ago we talked about the number of senior games a good player is able to make before he’s noticed by those to rich and lazy to do as much low-level research Celtic must do to unearth a gem.

Victor Wanyama made 51 appearances before becoming a Celtic player, Virgil van Dijk made 62.  It’s likely both spent the bulk of those games without anyone paying much attention to them, Celtic’s scouts are likely to have been alerted when they have little more than a dozen or so games left at their previous clubs.

Ciftci’s made 67 senior appearances.  If he has what it takes, the world will know about it sooner rather than later.

    On your three points,

First two you’ve lost me completely learn detachment then find and learn to appreciate my unconditional love being abused, sorry pal completely illogical.

On the point I do think understand, legally there was nothing in the world to stop them exposing it (question the validity) and questioning the integrity of the parties involved and their suitability to be in the positions they held. It’s no rocket science, really.

Yeah. Thank god we didn’t sign the “unknown Lubo Moravcik” and instead signed John Spencer. The cheap option is never the right one.

I take it that last seasons CG moneygrab funded our new refurb.

Yeah, it will look really nice when we are getting pumped again in the CL.

Wouldn’t that money be better spent on a decent player.

I am aware of the constraints, I am not aware of any club sponsored process of plan to unshackle us from our most nearest leech.

Paul67 has spoke about the power of the Scottish Pound in football TV circles, I think I can count on one hand the number of people on here who have cancelled their subscriptions in protest. But maybe I missed some ‘cos I’m not on so much of late.

You want us to compete with bigger nations, then you make the hard decisions manifest. You begin with amalgamation or a necessary cull, just like was espoused by Mr. McCann himself all those years ago.

If we don’t… we all go under. There are other ways too but mate I’m too bored and tired to even discuss them, they’ve been done to death on here for 10 years, Atlantic League etc. How I would love an Atlantic League.

‘I, personally, believe the Board have that balance right since it will show up in the accounts if they get it wrong at any stage……’

I personally believe that the balance is wrong. That is ‘showing up’ by the numbers not showing up to watch a team which we all love.

This board may be economically successful. But I reckon that if we wurnae Celtic supporters born and bred, few would now choose to become one.

That wasn’t the case in the past when we welcomed many newcomers into the fold on the back of our success on the pitch.

    67 heaven,

I wouldn’t consider myself to be a board basher but I would question your assertion about the last three years.

The back end of season 2013-14 and the start of 2014-15 was in my opinion, shambolic.

In a close knit organisation like Celtic, it would have been no surprise to many within the organisation that Neil Lennon would be gone at seasons end. To date, the supporters and shareholders have received no credible reason for these events. In addition, the appointment of the new coach, who I think has done well in the circumstances so far, was poorly handled amid the usual secrecy, he was given a very poor hand by our board for the Champions League qualifiers and suffered the logical consequence. In fact I would go so far as to say that what I witnessed at Murrayfield was as poor a Celtic display as I have seen anywhere, though it was no great surprise after watching the debacle in Warsaw. I also experienced a level of anger aimed at the board the like of which I had not seen since the dark days of the Kelly/White regime.

Sometimes a bit of perspective is required when discussing the merits of the Board, when was the last time that they actually addressed the shareholders on anything of note?

    Either

We buy a proven SPFL striker for around 1 million who WILL do well in the league and MAY do well in Europe…. and we MIGHT get into the last 16 (if we qualify)

    Or

We buy a ‘Champions League class’ striker who is unproven in the SPFL for 4 million who MAY do well in the league and MAY do well in Europe…. but still we MIGHT get into the last 16 (if we qualify)

It will show up in the accounts eventually, some CA supporters might pick up on it, why are the accounts deliberately set up to confuse the layman ?

Accounts can be set out to be reader friendly very easily, we have what, 3 CA’s on the board ? and they seem to spend their time making sure the accounts are presented in a way that the average shareholder needs to hire a CA to understand the accounts, do you understand the accounts when they are released ? If not how can you be sure you will spot any issues you might want answers to ? The rotten mob went down the plug hole because too many of their supporters thought their board were doing a great job and didn’t know how to question or didn’t want to know about potential issues, the board bashers you don’t like are one of the main differences between us, we learned by experience not to trust out board in the 90’s people who want us to support the board unquestioningly because on the surface we look like we’re doing well are the biggest threat to our club. Have your digs at them but remember they are doing you a service. Yep even I feel I’m getting too negative at times but that does more to help our club than being too positive as the rotten mob found out.

Hi Summa …. usually enjoy your posts, so I hope you dont take this as a shot at you … .not intended as such …. just fhans chatting, and respectfully disagreeing … (I hope)

You might be right about the fans on here not knowing what is going on …. but that is the problem. As shareholders, the Board has a duty to keep us apprised of material developments (i.e., developments that impact upon the finances of the company). Surely, the 5 way agreement would impact upon our business.

And more to the point, unlike us CQN’ers, who are not paid to be in the know/understand what is happening, the Board has a fiduciary obligation to know and understand what is happening, and some of them are paid very handsomely for that job.

So … if not one person knows, then the directors are failing as directors.

If I have misunderstood your point, and this is some debate about epistemology (what is the meaning of knowledge), then I will respectfully bow out …..

Souness was brought up in the Saughton Mains area of Edinburgh, and supported local side Hearts[1] and Rangers.[2] As a teenager Souness played for local boys’ club North Merchiston.

Souness’s career began as an apprentice at Tottenham Hotspur under Bill Nicholson. He signed professional forms as a 15-year-old in 1968. Frustrated at a lack of first team opportunities, the teenage Souness reputedly informed Nicholson that he was the best player at the club. Souness made one first team appearance for Spurs, in a UEFA Cup tie as a substitute.
