Bonfire of the nonentities

How would you prepare to face a Celtic team that had already beaten you four times and drawn once this season? In their wisdom, Newco have decided this is the week to add to the clear out of talent on and off the park. It was confirmed yesterday that finance director Kenny Barclay will leave at the end of the season.

Since chairman Douglas Park resigned a month ago, the blood on the brogues has extended to chief exec Stewart Robertson, sporting director Ross Wilson, and football admin director Andrew Dickson. While I understand new chairman John Bennett is a wealthy man, he does not have the wherewithal of Park, so a downsize is no surprise. This particular trend has a way to go yet.

Today The Sun report they are inviting offers for striker Antonio Colak, just days after Mick Beale confirmed he was far from upset at the prospect of losing Alfredo Morelos for free this summer. Ryan Kent and Allan McGregor are also confirmed for the departure lounge, while others out of contract are certain to follow.

Back in the day, when Celtic were on top, Rangers would prepare for us with a siege mentality – us against the world stuff. Now the disinterest is striking. Ange Postecoglou must make the most of whatever discord exists at Ibrox on Saturday. It will not be us against the world, but it will be us against the other 50,000 in attendance. Get the siege mentality working in our favour.

I know the boy Reilly was late for his first game with Rovers. He had travelled by train, and, on alighting at Sunnyside, asked for directions to Cliftonhill.

Having been told to “just follow the crowds”, he ended up in Asda.

The media’s tumbleweed response to swathes of the Executive Leadership team leaving the building is unsurprising.

Beale was recently asked about departure of DoF.

Simple response (is he capable of any other kind?).

I’ll do both jobs in short term.

    Just like that.

    No challenge.

No “hang on a minute. Two guys doing work becomes one guy doing same work. There must be an impact surely?”

Sleepwalking into “it” (whatever it is)

    … same as last time.

  9. No idea how many board members they have but the big table in the big hoose must be pretty empty at the moment?

Is it all about cost-cutting ahead of admin or a clearing of the decks by Bennett to put his own people in place? Apparently Beale has been reassured he will get more money to spend this summer than any manager in recent years . . . makes you wonder.

I really hope this time we put the boot on their throat and do not remove it.

  10. I do have a wee bit of head scratching around how that Organisation actually functions without board members and senior staff.

In the simple governance responsibilities someone needs to clear the payroll, approve the spending, do the functionary statutory accountancy ………… dare i say make sure HMRC is being paid …………

    then again ……..

  18. In other news.

Anfield expansion of the Anfield road stand is scheduled to complete early august.

61,000 capacity, added 7,000 seats at a cost of 80 million pounds.

we could do something like this for celtic park main stand, but it would be a 2 year construction schedule.

    now might be the time.

They are free to a good home if anybody is interested otherwise the seats will be empty.

Realise it’s short noticed, hope somebody can make use of them

My uninformed tuppence on South Stand redevelopment.

BTW – my seat is here so would be affected.

    Rough capacity breakdown

    North Stand – 27,000

    Jock Stein – 13,000

    Lisbon Lions – 13,000

    South Stand – 7,800.

Relocate South stand ST holders for a year.

There are 53,000 seats and c. 53,000 ST holders.

Domestic games : no away fans for a year

European games : This is a problem. We might get dispensation to restrict away fans to e.g. 1000 fans?

Start demolition one day after final home game in May 2024.

15 months (mid-May 24 to mid-Aug 25) to build superstructure and bottom tier of new stand taking us back up to original capacity

Another 12 months to build second tier taking capacity to 67,525.

  27. St Stivs,

I would love to see some infrastructure upgrade to our ground. Very soon the main stand upgrade will not be an option.

But this latest upgrade at Liverpool takes their total spend to circa £200m in the last 10 years.

We could not contemplate that sort of capital outlay.. Bear in mind Forbes values Liverpool as the 4th most valuable club.

I wonder if we could upgrade the main stand without total demolition for a fraction of that cost. Imo the capacity doesn’t need to be increased.

We could utilise the full East stand to supplement what will remain open to relocate supporters during phased construction.

Now I know you said you were crap at Maths but seriously, any ideas would be appreciated.

This will be coming at us very soon.

Another option you may like. Why not make the lower tier a standing section. In fact I quite like that idea.
