Bonfire of the nonentities

How would you prepare to face a Celtic team that had already beaten you four times and drawn once this season? In their wisdom, Newco have decided this is the week to add to the clear out of talent on and off the park. It was confirmed yesterday that finance director Kenny Barclay will leave at the end of the season.

Since chairman Douglas Park resigned a month ago, the blood on the brogues has extended to chief exec Stewart Robertson, sporting director Ross Wilson, and football admin director Andrew Dickson. While I understand new chairman John Bennett is a wealthy man, he does not have the wherewithal of Park, so a downsize is no surprise. This particular trend has a way to go yet.

Today The Sun report they are inviting offers for striker Antonio Colak, just days after Mick Beale confirmed he was far from upset at the prospect of losing Alfredo Morelos for free this summer. Ryan Kent and Allan McGregor are also confirmed for the departure lounge, while others out of contract are certain to follow.

Back in the day, when Celtic were on top, Rangers would prepare for us with a siege mentality – us against the world stuff. Now the disinterest is striking. Ange Postecoglou must make the most of whatever discord exists at Ibrox on Saturday. It will not be us against the world, but it will be us against the other 50,000 in attendance. Get the siege mentality working in our favour.

  1. I’d hat to see Ralston go – it’s a long time since we had quality like him on the bench – never lets us down, contributes…

Leggy, Brian M and BelmontBrian should be gracing us with their presence on Friday. And don’t encourage the Coatbridge bam about his jokes. Thank feck Coneybhoy is in Kildare. 🙄

  3. Regards stadium plans at Liverpool, that’s 80 million with all the trimmings, 60 million basic structure.

Celtic would be better adding top tiers to the south east and west corners, raising the roof of the main stand and extending the from of main stand towards the celtic way to improve facilities for the current main stand.

I am sure some smart structural engineer would be able to come up with a smart way to add a second smaller upper tier ala hampden park with some executive boxes etc. On the existing build (albeit reinforced) for less than 60 million.

  9. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    CONEYBHOY on 10TH MAY 2023 4:31 PM

    Yes indeedy.

    67-5-25.

A permanent homage to our greatest team and achievement.

Worship aside and looking at it practically?

I understand the point of view that current capacity is OK.

And I am against a mirror build of the North Stand and an 80,000 capacity.

(Team could play in front of a very creditable 53k attendance and the place would be a third empty)

    IMHO – c. 67k strikes a balance.

We could address waiting lists and current positive focus and pull 59k – 63k into league games regularly.

I think we could sell out big European games easily.

Another factor is being a genuine European big boy.

    We shouldn’t stand still.

Currently there are 8 viable club stadia in Europe with capacity greater than 67,000.

San Siro is finished and Milan clubs will downsize.

A number of clubs (many are English) are expanding to low 60 thousands or high to mid 50 thousands.

We expand to 67k – we’ll be in top ten stadia by size … for a generation.

… At same time, (speaking of standing still) these other expansions will see Sevco’s ground dropping out of the top 50.

  10. So Celtic Park South Stand refurbishment and expansion.

I have spoken with several colleagues and people in the Construction business over time, many with Celtic supporting backgrounds.

General consensus is a complete demolition and rebuild is a non starter.

Average attendnace is now 58,700. Of which near 55,000 are season ticket holders.

With no huns ever coming to Celtic park, watch for maybe even an uplift on SB capacity.

As an aside, I am kind of fed up that we have a stated 60,800 capacity, and we have sold out signs online, but there are always away seats empty, and celtic supporters wanting in.

If away fans come in their hundreds, give them just enough seats, not a single seat should be empty when our supporters want in.

    Get that sorted Celtic.

    Back to the South stand.

The idea of a new build top tier over the current structure is favoured by those in the industry.

The business case to refurbish and displace existing fee paying customers is not liked, with another consideration being the 1929 front wall of the main stand is in behind the current glass, it was never taken away, and might even have listed status. Much of the layout in there is still the 1929 design.

I have mentioned before also, the front stand is actually built on top of the old enclosure, steps, that is in there as well.

I have asked about the feasability of building upper tier corners extending from LL and JS and joining up to the current main stand, but it would tower over the current roof structure by 20 metres at least.

Building out onto the celtic way, with a structure similar to anfield will cost £80m + and you have to add capacity and business lounges to make the business case workable, it needs to have an ROI payback medium term, not in 20 years.

We talk about a cost per seat added as a metric for total build costs, Anfield added 15,000 seats at a cost of £200m. done over two phases. If you get a chance watch some of the drone footage of the build progress, quite funny actually , some punters with no building knowledge make long videos, stating the bleeding obvious without knowing the schedule or the sequence of the programme of works – look more bricks in that wall, look another glass panel, look some tarmac, (ta-maq in scouse)

Anfield could next season beat its own attendnace record set some 70 years ago. ,,,,,,,

other projects in England Palace new stand 13,000 seats cost £80m, Fulham new main stand, City going to add another tier on one side, Newcastle possible expansion study, West Ham adding more to become the biggest capacity in London, at 63,000 and beating all their all time attendnace records in doing so.

Now the good stuff in the finances, we have a lot of money in the bank and coming in the future.

The riches of CL participation from 2024/25 season are mouth watering to a club in our environment.

Now is the time to start spending it on infrastructure.

As an aside, and this is very real for construction industry.

Net Carbon zero by 2050 is mandatory. There are benchmarks and targets to be acheived at 2030, 2035 and so on.

A massive south stand roof would be fully Solar pannelled.

Other green factors need to be added.

There is one nagging unknown for the construction and ground works guys, is there mineworks under the front door and down to london road ?

Is the fabled tunnel to the vatican still there, and could it be reused to get us 5 star stadium status with busses arriving in the tunnell.

So aye, now is the time to start making it happen.

  11. Another wee metric table,

Celtic park will drop out of the top 10 capacity club stadiums in the UK in 2024.

and imho, the scottish government should rebuild hampden asking for funding via the lottery, like what wales did. and before we host the euros.

    to be fair to them,

i did the same in 95, taking literally hundreds of construction pictures of celtic park , a roll of film ever couple of weeks, eagerly going to supasnaps to get them printed and then boring the arse of everyone in the work and on the supporters bus.

the funny thing about being at hampden for a season, from th eceltic end you could literally watch celtic park rebuild on the horizon,

i wish i had a drone back then.

  17. We have Kyogo and Oh as our main strikers, but just suppose a club comes in with a huge bid for Kyohgo that would just leave us with one striker ,is the big Dutch striker a option or is he not good enough to play for Celtic,
