BONNER HAILS TIERNEY

CELTIC legend Pat Bonner reckons Kieran Tierney is smiles better than other defenders.

The former Hoops and Republic of Ireland international keeper is a fully paid-up member of the 20-year-old left-back’s admiration club.

Bonner said: “You know the thing about defending is you have to enjoy it.

“Sometimes I look at modern-day centre-halves and they love being on the ball and passing it.

“But they don’t actually really, really enjoy the art of defending.

“However, Kieran Tierney is the one who does that fantastically well.”

As his old club prepare for tonight’s Europa League clash with Zenit St Petersburg, Bonner wasn’t quite so enthusiastic about some of the performances from other defenders after watching Brendan Rodgers’ team edge past Partick Thistle 3-2 in the Scottish Cup at the weekend.

He added: “Celtic were almost hanging on near the end.

“Tierney got in to make an unbelievable tackle in the last seconds of the game where they could have gone into a situation where a replay would be required after being 2-0 and then 3-1 up.

“As a team unit, you have to get the defending right.

“There are too many changes at the moment, too many people getting injured and too many players coming in and out.

“Also, they are not playing to the standard that is expected.”
