Bookies, taxi drivers and Best of the Rest

93

I know we’ve touched on this recently but it’s worth repeating.  Celtic will meet with and speak to many candidates for the manager’s job.  Some will be genuine ‘targets’, some will be applicants, who the club meet out of courtesy, some will be more general fishing exercises.

Agents, taxi drivers, hotel staff and grannies will get wind, so information slips out.  As a result, this information attracts considerably more weight that the unknown activity which is going on simultaneously.

If the bookies know Celtic have met someone, that person becomes favourite for the job, because the bookies know very little about what is going on.  Bookies know they are in the dark, so the risk of a significant exposure on one position is great.  Their market can also quickly become illiquid, not allowing them to defray the risk.

Right now Celtic are still considering options, no one has been offered anything.  Even when they get to offer stage, there will still be a way to go before an appointment is made.

I see Aberdeen have signed two new players this week, as well as securing one of last season’s loaners on a permanent deal, and extending the contracts of Anderson, Robson and Nicky Low.  These are the actions of a solvent, forward-planning football club, and they’re not alone in the Premiership.  If you’re betting on anything, back them as Best of the Rest, but it’s probably more profitable to keep your cash in your pocket.

If you missed it yesterday………

Lisbon Lion John Hughes is joining Brogan Rogan, Auldheid and Angela Haggerty for a CQN Question and Answer evening at the Manor Club, Wimbledon, on 21 June. The event is ticket only, so let me know if you would like to attend, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Thanks for the update although, to be honest, it’s a bit depressing to read that you’re role continues to be that of dampening expectations of a swift resolution.

We’re going to have to rely on our captain and senior players to get us through the CL 2nd qualifying round.

How can we risk losing goals through confusion about the system put in place by a new arrival?

Anyway, I enjoyed the slap to the Board about the activity a solvent, forward-planning football club engages in at this time of the year.

Sign new players, secure the future of last season’s loaners and extend the contracts of crucial current stars.

Why aren’t we doing any of these Celtic?

I disagree. Maybe I’m worng but I think the vast majority of the support would agree Keane lacks the basic people skills to be a manager, handling players and the media.

His conduct as Man Utd captain towards the end of his career was very poor. His media performances are sullen and arrogant.

Aisde from his personality his record in management is poor. Think he could be in good place as a number 2 at ROI but the thought of him as manager at Parkhead frightens me and not in a good way!

the provision for blue badge holders before the recent work was done around the ground was pitiful and the best way for those with limited mobility to attend would be to arrive very early and leave long after everyone else. With some local streets closed to residents only during the games it will be a tricky affair

PS if Dermot continues to take advice from Sir Alex then surely Keane wouldn’t have a look in!

The Daily Mail article is shrouded in question marks. They are only reporting speculation.

“Any appointment is going to attract begrudgers and critics because their favourite has not been chosen.”

    ———————–

I get the feeling from reading the posts on here that the majority of people don’t have a favourite. But rather they are picking as their choice the least worst option, in their view, from the list of candidates.

Keane is due to do the press conference this evening ahead of Irelands weekend friendly, so we should know soon enough if there is anything in this…

The Mail article definitively states that ‘Keane has won the race’. They broke the news of Lennons departure too.

    Time will tell…

  12. The Honest Cover Up

All the faults you post about Roy Keane are telling and truthful.

However, subsequent incumbents of the Ipswich and Sunderland manager’s seats have fared no better than him and Man U are a lot worse for his going, so he does have positive qualities too.

I am not a big fan but I am prepared to be proved wrong. I have no idea how you go about knowing whether the vast majority of Celts will support him. I’d suspect, no candidate has more than a 15% share of first preference votes amongst the support but there are plenty for whom people have a strong dislike.

As always, with the Celtic support, the final judgement will be made on actual results and playing style and not on forecasts.
