I was away last week and missed the Rennes game, so I have that ‘Can’t wait to see Celtic in action’ buzz right now.  The outcome of the tie was decided in the first leg when Scott Sinclair added Celtic’s third goal, but the game is important preparation for the stiffer challenges ahead.  Boli Mbombo and Christopher Jullien need every possible minute on the field to become part of a solid defensive structure.  Everyone in the squad has fitness work to do, and remember, this is Neil Lennon’s first proper chance to work with the players on new tactics.

It was at this stage last year that Jozo Simunovic picked up a red card suspension, despite Celtic winning the away first leg 0-3.  It made no difference in the end, but there is no point making life complicated; let’s not pick up unnecessary bookings that can count against us later in the competition.  I know it would be asking too much to hope for 90 minutes without injury…

    The reason that some clubs enter the competition at a later stage is due to their country rankings, even if their club co-efficient is actually lower than Celtic, e.g Zagreb 29.5/Celtic 31.00

     

     

    Once into the draw the club co-efficient determines whether they are seeded or unseeded.

    John McGinn would’ve been a perfect natural successor but unfortunately it didn’t work out.

     

     

    Not wanting to start any debate on why it didn’t happen ( been done to death already ).

     

     

    Agree it’s something we need to plan for such is Broony’s influence both on and off the park but let’s get the RB in first.

    Sarajevo looked more than competent in the first leg.

     

    Particularly the first half.

     

     

    From their own perspective they should be concerned how they finished the match. Once Sinclair buried the 3rd. It could easily have been 4 or 5 goals to the good for us.

     

     

    They seemed to deflate rapidly. Maybe a pre-season fitness issue. They just seemed very weak in the closing stages of the game.

    I expect much the same, in terms of game pattern tomorrow night.

     

     

    They will look to hit us on the counter attack. They will be physical and compact.

     

    Another tough first half in store.

     

     

    If we show the right balance of quality and patience, I see us scoring a couple of 2nd half goals.

     

     

    2-0 Full-time. Is my prediction.

    They were/are no mugs.

     

    They will scrap & biff their way around hoping to sneak an early goal and put pressure on us.

     

    Their fitness cannot have improved that much in 8 days so I think your scoreline is pretty spot in, but we may need to wait until they tire late on before we get the second.

    If we score tomorrow night, then Sarajevo need to score 4 without conceding, to knock us out – 3 to take it to extra time.

     

    An early goal then control possession should really ease the pressure

    They will have a gameplan to score early too, which may actually work in our favour if we can take the chances that we make.

    A pal of mine, once of this parish…Grand67….gets solid wooden Celtic Plaques carved, and always finds a few spares for suitable homes…I believe that one may have been doing the rounds at the Golf day……Anyway…

     

     

    Here’s a couple of wee snaps of the 2013 version and the latest 2019 issue.

     

     

    They are 14″ by 14″ and about 0.75″ thick.

     

     

    Hopefully there will be an all new masterpiece next year.
