Boot on the other foot for a change

601

For years we worried of the consequences an away trip in Europe would do to our weekend performance.  The boot is on the other foot now.  Hearts head to Celtic Park on Sunday after returning from Switzerland in the early hours of this morning.

Their result against Zurich was perfect: a narrow defeat keeps the tie alive; manager Robbie Neilson will be alert to the possibility of delivering Europa League football with a sold home win on Thursday.  Do not underestimate the emotional and physical strain put on the Hearts players as a result of last night’s game.  I am feeling unusually confident about Sunday.

There is a similar story at play with another Glasgow-Edinburgh fixture this weekend.  Hibs host Newco, who are between European qualifiers.  Hibs, like Celtic, don’t need to bother about these games.

Newco’s next six league games include visits to Hibs, Celtic, Aberdeen and Hearts.  This run will expose whatever weaknesses exist in their squad.  Celtic have their own business to take care of, and we will be in the middle of Champions League group stage exertions during this period, but, the opportunity is there to build a clear lead in the title race.

    bloody spl computer,

by giving thems hard away fixtures in the first quarter, and after european ties, they are just doing this so that they wont have to travel to these place in the last 6 split.

  2. That was an excellent and surprising result for Neil’s team. Hopefully, they can finish the job in a very hot environment next week. I saw some of the Hearts game and I’d say they have a decent chance, though the Swiss are slight favourites, as I think they can score in Edinburgh. I’d imagine if Hearts got into the Europa, they’d take a few pastings. I’m also optimistic the huns will be in the Europa. It might be tight but I expect psv to go through. They seem to play in a few short spells the other night, when they looked pretty good. I’m hoping at home, they’ll be 2 up before half time 👍

  3. It will certainly be interesting to see how Hearts fare, we definitely struggled with the Thursday night away games.

Still, Heats at Tynecastle is a much tougher prospect, they may be the third best team in Scotland by some distance but Celtic at Celtic Park was always a tough ask, no matter how hard they kick.

Thanks to those who responded to my early Thursday morning post. Apologies for the delay in acknowledging them, I do like to reply to the good fholk who mention my comments but the reply to my posts earlier in the week from SFtBs was a bit later and longer than anticipated;)

Anyways is stirred a debate and I believe that was good, for those who say move on, sure, but we know the Scottish football establishment who were fiercely kicking the cans down the road from 2011 were depending on that exact response – at least you know Campbell loves ya!!

    Hope my apologies and a response to BOURNESOUPRECIPE @ 18 August 2022 – 11:14 AM, will suffice…

I hope it’s chilled in the Chilterns

BTW it’s ‘ Rainjurz we don’t need no steenkin Rainjurz ’ note spelling.

When I saw SFTB’s long Celtic post warning I immediately expected trouble, where have you been? I suspect that you are miffed at Sevco’s Euro ‘runs’ and like a lot of Celtic supporters you redirect your miff, at the Celtic board because somehow it was them not Scottish Society at large, that let them start up to eventually get past the Petrofac ‘flushed’ with success in Seville.

Since we spoke last, Sevco are now well established in Scotland they have arrived kicking, rioting , screaming and come fully endorsed via your regular British TV licence and national broadcasters. They have been allowed to reneague on the official League sponsor, and had two suspected ‘ Kafflikly referees ‘ serve lengthy bans from iPox.

Board v St Brendan Board v Rainjurz Board v SFA Board v Green Brigade whatever the debate most Celtic supporters who see it this way and meet at the insecton of interest can come down on either side. It’s the ones that can’t that seek attention. The St Brendan debate is old hat and we’ll never agree, your board stance is too entrenched on that one.

Raging CQN monikers aside the Celtic board like the rest of football waited for Lord Nimmo Smith to deliver his judgment, no matter how deeply flawed it turned out to be. This was the verdict of the highest court in the land, what were Celtic supposed to do other than vote ‘ney’ like the rest and have Spare License FC start up in the Baw in Hedge League?

“ Losing Rainjurz was bad for business “ another heroic CEO Fergus McCann

Genuinely, interested in what Celtic Football Club were to have done at this point when LNS delivered his judgement which incidentally found Rainjurz guilty on most of the charges.

Would you have accepted a statement like

“They died , we know they died, and they know that we know, they died “

    Makes sense to me CSC

Firstly thanks for phrasing correction, you are of course right but what I was referring to was this…

It is very chilled in the Chilterns thanks, it is now a full time “chore” for me!!

Stiil lovin’ your well informed, smart and articulate comments – you are still the top reviewer of Celtic matches by far…

Thank you for the displacement observation, I’ll give that a good think…

Hoping for a PSV victory next week, Celtic need a strong Rangers to keep the Boards feet to the fire (and keeping the sectarian well of wealth overflowing) but we really don’t need them in the UCL propa’

One of those little Europa runs they do them nicely.

Yes, we can forget Brendan, we have Ange an altogether better fit – Greek Philosophy, Catholic angst, powerful combination.

As for the LNS judgement, as one of the saddos who actually read it several times I’d say there were several things here…

First of all the five way agreement had been signed BEFORE the LNS Commission (not to be confused with the earlier LNS Report that was the SFA).

The SPL had originally Commissioned the pseudo legal process to stop the SFA process in it’s tracks, yet delayed it and its eventual function was to give legitimacy to the five way agreement.

It was far from the highest court in the land, in fact it was far from the lowest court in the land – in fact I’m not even sure it’s a legally binding document.

The punishments you talk of were all agreed beforehand and accepted by oldco and newco, the smoking gun surrounding the WTC was conveniently (for some) dropped and the unlawful player registrations (remember the stripping of titles and all those null in void games and 3-0s) huge – yet fudged. They got a get out of jail free card on that.

Also the BTC was deemed to be unlawful by the highest court in the land but that was after the LNS Commission findings and there was a little convenient caveat in that document.

The caveat stated that the EBTs were deemed to be legal by the Commission and that if they were subsequently found not to be then the Commission COULD NOT, go back and re-exam their findings.

Members of the Celtic Board were members of the SPL Board during this process, Celtic Board members had been sent the five way agreement.

When the verdict came in there was a lot faux surprise sure but you don’t get a multi million pound bank balance by not been the ghuy in the know you know…

    If you know your history…

How can that be when we are regularly told that the fixture computer was programmed to disadvantage Celtic with early trips to Ross County and Kilmarnock (8-1 aggregate)?

  7. I’d assume Halkett is out for them on Sunday which is good news for shins and ankles but I’d almost prefer them to be looking for a result instead of lying deep and relying on set pieces and the occasional charge up the pitch masquerading as a counter-attack.

But I agree Thursday is such a huge one-off game for them that it must be playing on their minds already. Another first half masterclass from Gregg Taylor and an early goal or two will have them thinking about their next game. Otherwise the prospect of a draining final 30 minutes against GG and the subs should finish them off. Run them ragged in the first half then stop for half time and run them ragged again

Can someone explain how Hearts got to this stage in Europe

Their first game sees them with a Europa League play off round which if they lose they go into Europa Conference group stage.

Is it all because Scottish coefficient has risen ?

  10. My friends in Celtic,

Sunday will be the new Saturday. In the boozers early, enjoy the pre match buzz, arrive bang on kick off and savour the chat after the game discussing how we only scored 4 and missed another 5 sitters.

What we do know is that Ange will set his team up to entertain. This is a major bonus indeed some may say a necessity in Scottish football.

We take no lessons from the huns, but they have surely killed the negativity on here that a Scottish team cannot perform well in Europe, or even win a trophy.

Entertain, determination and a slice of luck . Then who knows.

    HH, the journey continues.

  11. It is indeed the CO-EFFIENT and the absence of russian teams, effectively every european qualifieying team moved up a round, Celtic benefiting the most with direct entry to the CL.

Yes, our performances and the Huns results over the last 5 years mean our nation coefficient is the highest it’s been for a very long time. Which means Scottish clubs join qualification in the later rounds

It’s likely to drop off next season unless we can pick up some unexpected coefficient points next season

Over the next decade I’d like to see the number of individuals double.

I’d like each season ticket holder to own at least one share per season ticket per season.

If, during the same period, 17.25% became 30.25% ?

    That would be good.

    Thanks for the replies.

I was curious as my local team (The Dublin Hoops aka Shamrock Rovers) are in the 4th European tie this season. They are now at the same stage as Hearts and are guaranteed Conference League.

Lost 4 nil away to Ferencevaros last night (missing 6 regulars so really up against it)

However I would fancy Shamrock Rovers to beat Hearts if they meet in Conference League.

we are entering a period of real wealth, and highest ever revenues with potentially consecutive 3-5 years of mega profit.

the business model works for sure, this stability brings opportunity to get organised and press for relevant dilution of the owners and either new share issues (preferable to me) or as you say shares for season books holders.

did you phone radio clyde a few weeks ago ?

a caller tore keevins a new one about his disparaging of Sligo beating Mwell as no scottish team should ever be beaten by a LOI team.

Caller explained how much standards have improved, the summer football advantages, and that LOI teams beating scottish teams has been happening for years now. Cant remeber who put aberdeen out, and was it st johnstone or kilmarnock another time.

caller bigged up shmrock acheivements in particular and said in general the top 4 or so in ireland would match all the scottish teams bar 2 in competativeness,

Hugh respond by “as i say no scottish team should be getting beat by a league ireland team”

  22. SAINT STIVS on 19TH AUGUST 2022 12:57 PM

I’m wrong about the national coefficient decreasing after this season, we would need only one win and two draws from the cl group for it to remain the same and Sevco lose their worst European year in their five year total to be replaced by this season which can only improve it.

  23. Why would the owners dilute their shareholding by issuing new shares unless it’s for a specific project that will add to the profitability of the business? The business has been run in a certain way for years so that we don’t need to resort to share issues for working capital.

Or giving shares away with season tickets if that’s what’s being suggested?

Or are we talking about the extra 13% being existing shares?

  24. What is the Starz on

    St Stivs

Standards have risen in league here and summer football has given teams a fitness advantage in the earlier rounds of European qualifying.

St Patrick’s Athletic were unlucky to go out to CSKA Sofia last week and both Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk have now qualified twice each for European Group stage football (Europa 3 times and now conference once)

Bohemians knocked out Aberdeen some years back and famously beat Rangers 3 2 in 1984 in a home leg best remembered for the way both sets of fans and the police all held hands, sung ecumenical hymns and peacefully left the ground.

Some of the above may be untrue

Saint Stivs and I were referring exclusively to the oft aired claim by you and others that away visits to Ross County and Kilmarnock in our first 3 games were proof that the fixture computer is fixed to damage Celtic’s chances of keeping up with Sevco in the league.

Don’t bother trying to conflate this with other issues. If you make risible claims on CQN, expect to have them ridiculed when it falls flat. I’ll say it again – Why weren’t we sent to Ibrox, Pittodrie, Tynecastle or Easter Road instead of Dingwall (3-1) and Rugby Park (5-0) if they wanted to disadvantage us early doors?

  26. Thursday night Euro football or free week, makes no difference, Neilson and Elbows will set up with two banks of five with McKay as the out ball. Play for nil nil but will accept a narrow defeat.

Irritating wee nuisance, and Category B thug, Cammy Devlin, will risk an early booking but it might take a Lafferty (60 minutes) until it happens.

Hibs are rank rotten so any points dropped by our major rival will be a welcome surprise. Can’t see it happening.

A home team win in Eindhoven on Wednesday night will send us to bed happy, and then all eyes will focus on the Halic Congress Center in Istanbul, at 5pm on Thursday. Mouthwatering Pots without the noodle.
