Meanwhile former Celtic kid Michael Doyle admitted he was “gutted” after being given the boot by Sheffield United.
The Republic of Ireland midfielder, 33, has been told by boss Nigel Clough he will not be offered a new contract.
Doyle, who began his career at the Hoops in 1998 before moving to Coventry City in 2002, joined the Blades four years ago and was named as skipper.
However, with the failure to overcome Swindon in the Championship play-offs, Clough is clearing the way at Bramall Lane and Dublin-born Doyle is one of the first casualties.
He said: “I’m gutted. I’ve enjoyed every minute. I would have liked to have found out earlier, so I could have said goodbye to the fans properly.
“They’ve always shown me great respect and I hope I’ve done the same for them. I hoped to stay here, but I think I always knew there was a danger I wouldn’t be.”
Doyle is now on the look-out for a new club and has admitted he would prefer to remain in British football.
