  1. Perhaps a way to avoid a pumping with players we have (knowing we don’t have a top defensive midfielder):

    Kasper

AJ, CCV, Scales, GT (or Valle)

    Engels, Reo, Calmac, Bernardo

    Idah, Maeda

Full backs to forget being wingers, Maeda to go where ever most needed.

  2. P.S: I meant to put Luke McG in as an alternative to one of the midfield, but know there is no chance of Calmac being dropped.

Last night’s game always had the possibilities of being a step too far and so it proved, like most didn’t expect such a large deficit and expected us to trouble Dortmund far more than we did.

For all that happened and ultimately with the result we did in fact trouble them on numerous occasions we did trouble Dortmund at times, a better final pass and finishing and we could have had 3 or 4 goals. If Dortmund play like that, defensively they will be severely punished by teams at a much higher level who will take the chances offered up to us last night which we couldn’t capitalise on.

Horrible performance and equally horrible result.

I was hoping we wouldn’t get the “we will learn’ crap trotted out after the game but of course we did.

The manager will never learn at this level and we will continue to have results like this.

His big mantra about returning to Celtic to make progress in Europe should have been tempered with a change of his approach but as we all know he is unable to do that.

Look forward to Atalanta…rinse and repeat.

Not easy , but trying to forget about last night ; that’s gone . The rest of our season starts again on Sunday . We have domestic honours to win , records to set and we can sttill qualify from this CL group even if it’s in the play offs.

However , I can see us having more nights like this if we can’t find a way to stay in the game against superior sides . Sticking rigidly to a game plan which only works in Scotland is not worth the humiliation in Europe.

  6. onenightinlisbon on

We have been brilliant in Scotland this season so far but nights like that in Europe cannot be allowed to continue…

  7. So looking forwards there is still scope to qualify and even qualify well. Eg 12 points and a possible seeded last 16 place.

    We need 2 things :

A lot of draws beginning tonight amongst rivals apart from the obvious top 12-14 teams.

A manager who can have the humility to put out a team which respects our relativity in terms of talent and capability vs our opposition.

Wins v Brugge, Zagreb, Young Boys are possible. Draws with Villa, Atalanta and Leipzig are also possible.

WGS and Lenny had the humility to set sides out to achieve to the best of their ability v Barcelona Milan Man Utd and others. Hopefully Brendan can do this…….not holding my breath though. Sadly.

  8. What struck me last night is that Dortmund appeared to have watched us. They seemed to exploit some weak spots, many of which have been discussed on these pages.

Conversely, we seemed not to know their strengths or weaknesses. We seemed to play our own game and hope they would be more rubbish than Ruhr.

Alas, it wasn’t to be and the end result wasn’t pretty.

  9. Got out of bed early in Japan to see end of game and hoped for decent result…….

Seems like we believed our own hype….while I’m disapointed I sort of think we are heading in the right direction….. I’m no tactician and don’t really think Brendan needs my advice so let’s hope we give a better performance against Atalanta …Good luck Bhoys ☘️🙏👍

  10. ONENIGHTINLISBON – Agreed. The “lessons will be learnt” post-thrashing mantra leaves me in despair each time I hear it. We have learnt the square root of hee haw in how to avoid being torn apart in CL fixtures.

BR’s record in Europe is nowhere near where an elite manager should be and not just with us. His Liverpool and Leicester results were poor too. Never getting to the last 16 in the CL or EL.

He is head and shoulders above any manager in Scotland but also has the luxury of having next to no competition to test himself against and drive him to new ideas and tactics. He knows he can play the same way week in and week out without any need to adapt. Substitutions are almost always like for like. Winger on, winger off. Forward on, forward off.

The “we will learn” crap has worn thin for years.

The manager we have is a very good but absolutely not “elite” one.

Behind the couch for the next away tie in Europe for me!

  12. MCPHAIL BHOY @ 10:50 AM,

    Yes, agreed…

Saying we were “unlucky” seems a pp-excuse, but there is not doubt with the rub of the green the result could have been so different

Our accuracy and technique were wanting at the level Dortmund played at yesterday but that is something we can improve on and will improve on.

Hooe the players aren’t too despondent, as you say, a better pass, a better finish and things could have been so different

    Hail Hail

    Hail Hail

  13. A defeat happens in football but last night was a blow to our already poor reputation in European competitions. We just aren’t learning those lessons everyone talks about.

  14. Seems like there are loads of experts out there ready to give Brendan advice…..loads a master tacticians… you know……..we should have done this and we should have done that …

Don’t get it…. Suppose some of you might have managed an under 12s team so you might want to give him a call and tell him what he’s doing wrong …..We’re obviously in a bad place at the moment…..get real !
