Boyata crucial part of CL planning, failure to emulate Gretna

1050

I know Ronny Deila was delighted Dedryck Boyata pitched up at Glasgow Airport last night.  He’s a player the manager has known about for some time and one who was not on the Man City available list when we secured the loan deal for Jason Denayer a year ago.

The mechanics of the deal are interesting.  It’s quite possible it wouldn’t have happened at all without the success Jason enjoyed in Glasgow.  A year ago Jason was a complete unknown, below the pecking order than Dedryck, but we gave him a platform and now he’s a full Belgian international.  The pitch we put to Dedryck was along the lines of “Look what Jason achieved here”.  If we’d singed Dedryck instead of Jason a year ago, Jason would still be an unknown and Dedryck would be a Belgian international.

Assuming no late hiccups, Ronny will know his central defensive pairing for the Champions League qualifiers is sorted, allowing him to concentrate on other areas.

There are no guarantees in football, least of all with Champions League qualification, where we have three awkward knock-out rounds, but we’re starting the summer from a good place.

There’s so much to discuss about yesterdays’ Fir Park hilarity, the consequences of which will be profound.  More on this later in the week, but a few points on Motherwell.  For a team with such glaring shortcomings they deserved the scale of their victory.  Barraclough took a squad who finished 11th in the league into two challenging games and out-thought his opponent.

However, if Celtic fans behaved the way Motherwell fans behaved yesterday your Government would be all over it by now.  I’ve seen flares thrown onto pitches, I’ve seen pitch invasions (although I don’t remember seeing one congregating in front of opposition fans), but I’ve never seen a player smacked in the face and leg by a spectator’s flag, and I’ve never seen anything close to this entire repertoire from fans at a single game.

Who knows what the score would have been had Newco faced the team who finished 10th in the Premiership! Their attempt to emulate Grenta in winning three successive promotions always sounded like a tall order.  They came close, but they’re no Gretna. Not. Nearly. As. Good.

Nice idea, but not this weekend I’m afraid.

I need at least a fortnight’s notice in order to remember where I last put my golf shoes.

  3. Earlier I requested an idiots guide to FIFA statement. As it stands, I am still as thick now as I was when I made the request, and I have now read it 3 times. So, my request still stands. Here is the statement…. someone turn it into a Dick and Dora book for me please:

“Following claims made by the US authorities in relation to a USD 10m payment made by FIFA on behalf of the South African Football Association FIFA comments as follows:

In 2007, as part of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, the South African Government approved a USD 10m project to support the African diaspora in Caribbean countries as part of the World Cup legacy.

At the request of the South African Government, and in agreement with the South African Football Association (SAFA), FIFA was asked to process the project’s funding by withholding USD 10m from the Local Organising Committee’s (LOC) operational budget and using that to finance the Diaspora Legacy Programme.

SAFA instructed FIFA that the Diaspora Legacy Programme should be administered and implemented directly by the President of CONCACAF who at that time was Deputy Chairman of the Finance Committee and who should act as the fiduciary of the Diaspora Legacy Programme Fund of USD 10m.

The payments totalling USD 10m were authorised by the then chairman of the Finance Committee and executed in accordance with the Organisation Regulations of FIFA. FIFA did not incur any costs as a result of South Africa’s request because the funds belonged to the LOC. Both the LOC and SAFA adhered to the necessary formalities for the budgetary amendment.

Neither the Secretary General Jérôme Valcke nor any other member of FIFA’s senior management were involved in the initiation, approval and implementation of the above project.”

Berbatov can be great to watch when he’s on it. Amazing skill and first touch.

But half the time he just doesn’t look bothered. And in an RD high-tempo team…..????

Father Barry was a friend of mine. He gave my 3 kids their first Communion, Reconciliation and Confirmation. When he left St Joseph’s he took over St Agnes’ where I made all my sacrements. Me my bhoy Sean and my daughters partner Tom would go round on a Friday night to help clean the chapel of all the rubble left by the workies after stripping the plaster. My young sister done all his flowers for the altar for years. Every Monday he would come and visit my mother when she was alive and fittingly he gave her the Last Rites and held her hand with me when she passed. Tonight the world is a sadder place especially in my house. Noel you will be forever in our thoughts and prayers.

Sad news tonight that Father Noel Barry of St. Agnes’ Lambhill died today after a long and courageous fight against cancer.

He had embarked on a major renovation of the church when the cancer struck but battled on as best as he could despite obvious lack of health.

The key is the last sentence. A letter has emerged addressed to Valcke covering the source, budget arrangements and payment details.

    Valcke is toast.

The SA govt paid the SAFA €10M. FIFA withheld the same €10M from the SAFA Organising Committee budget, and thereafter, wired €10M to “The Diaspora Legacy Programme” under the exclusive control of Jack Warner.

“The Diaspora Legacy Programme” doesn’t exist.

Fantastic statement from our Board, vindicating / supporting our supporters’ resistance to the ill-conceived OB legislation ……. No-one is more pro-Police, law-abiding than myself and I strongly feel that the politicians once again let the public and Police down in hastily bringing in this silly Act……..hopefully, it will be repealed and more effective / focussed actions will be taken (like banning orangefests of bigoted hatred in our towns and cities)

  10. Tnt. Using my best wikidiot translator, this is what i’ve come up with.

SA get a budget. After some smokey room negotiations, 10m is set aside and “earmarked” for a diaspora project in the carribean since a lot of S’s went there in the 18th century – not all willingly .

Control of that 10m was at the discretion of carribean footie authorities.

It’s got nowt to do with fifa.

Carribean Peter borrowed from African Paul from the global FIFA kitty to give to the Carribean poor, only the Xarribean poor were shafted by FIFA when they made the cheque out to President of CONCACAF aka Carribean Ricardo Dick Turpin. SA then got the CONCACAF endorsement.

    Might be saying

FIFA owed south African football authorities $10m . South African football told FIFA not to pay them but instead asked FIFA to pay the Caribbean football authorities the $10m.

    In other words a bribe!

Olivia has got a date for her operation, 26th August, pre op appraisal is the 19th.

She will meet staff who will explain the operation and will spend time in the ward to give her an idea for what’s in store.

Minimum two weeks off school to recuperate, so that put a big smile on her face.

I will meet the school after the summer holidays to discuss some homework for her while she is off. I’ve not told her that yet.

This is “Reward Week” at her school and today is a dress down day as some of the kids are away on trips. She spoke to the headie and suggested that this week on dress down days pupils could bring in “Fair Trade” food for the local foodbank.

  23. Twists n Turns

To me it looks like FIFA are saying that the £10m that found its way into Jack Warner pocket did not come from SA football coffers ( or SA Govt) coffers but from FIFA itself. So where was the bribery to get SA the WC?

The transaction was simply the redirection of funds from one programme to another.

For it to be corrupt I imagine there would have to be proof that the channel used actually “bought” something from Warner at CONCACAF and Warner suggested the method on which the FIFA Vice President may have been blind sided.

There would have to be proof that he knew the true purpose of the arrangement for him to be involved in corruption.

If Warner is involved the stench cannot be avoided but greater proof than a bad smell is required.

In short FIFA say this was a transaction for a football development purpose so nothing to see here.

It’s like Regan saying UEFA licence was correctly granted in March 2011 without going on to cover the position in June.

The statement is true but it is what is not said that hides possible corruption. To prove that you need proof that something other than what is stated took place.

Ah good ole Freddie. I had forgotten about him. He looked like he forgot everything he knew about football when he crossed the border. Henchoz was another EPL ‘star’ who looked less than average up here.

It takes a special sort of character to be able to play the Celtic way and handle the off field pressure.

I hope PL’s cloning of Henrik Larsson is progressing well.

We are a shambles, a club that’s fast become a caricature of itself. Paying average players ridiculous wages and boardroom chancers that seek the blue pound.

It’s high time the support stopped backing any of these people. Don’t back them until they back us.

As for the blue pound, this blue pound that we keep telling ourselves the rest of Scottish Football needs – we need to get it fully into our heads, they either don’t actually need it or they simply hate us so much they don’t want it. We need to wake up.
