BOYATA QUIT MYSTERY

DEDRYCK BOYATA has pulled out of the Belgium squad ahead of their Euro 2020 tie against Cyprus due to “personal problems”.

The centre-back’s mysterious withdrawal has sparked fear he may not be available for Celtic’s Premiership encounter against Steven Gerrard’s Ibrox side a week today.

Boyata played the full 90 minutes of his nation’s 3-1 win over Russia during the week, but has now quit the international squad.

The World Cup defender was sidelined for the champions’ dramatic stoppage-time victory over Dundee at Dens Park last Sunday through injury.

He recovered in time to turn out for his country on Thursday, but boss Roberto Martinez admitted that he may play Spurs’ Thomas Vermaelen against the Cypriots in place of Boyata.

There was no information that suggested the Celt would completely drop out of the squad and there was no suggestion he had sustained a knock against the Russians.

The official Belgium Twitter account announced Boyata’s withdrawal citing personal reasons.
