Break record but don’t leave pointless

1241

At around 13:16 tomorrow afternoon Fraser Forster will hopefully break the 40-year record of Aberdeen’s Bobby Clark for not conceding a goal in Scottish league football.  Clark’s record is next up for the Celtic keeper but the British and European records are not too far away.

Apart from Celtic Park itself there would be no better place to break this record than at Tynecastle, but the most important part of the day is to secure a win.  Concede early but win the game and we have done our job.  Break the record and leave pointless and we will have nothing to celebrate.

Clarity has never been a prominent feature when it comes to the analysis of football finances.  2012 threw up a slew of ‘experts’, practically all of whom swallowed lines from PR people instead of explaining HMRC’s published rules on voting for or against Company Voluntary Arrangements.

Journalists were briefed on HMRC’s intentions, which filtered to the ‘experts’, soon this PR version of events was accepted an a reality.  The same was going on inside football.  One journalist called me back then to dispute my challenge to his assertion that Celtic would have vote to allow Newco Rangers into the SPL, and that the SPL itself was absolutely certain to vote them “back” (sic.).  Celtic were never going to that way and by then the SPL tide had turned.

It was not in Celtic’s interests to have Newco parachuted into top flight football, which has become clear in the subsequent years, although many in Scotland, including a sizeable chunk of the Celtic support, thought otherwise, and that the club would vote in favour.

It was, therefore, refreshing to watch BBC Reporting Scotland last night without the 2012 flops.  A new expert was found to ask the pertinent question, a £1.5m loan is fine for a short-term fix but what about the enormous long-term problems?

Many thanks to everyone who participated in the CQteN Dream Team.  We have now passed the 125 team target, which has triggered a £1000 donation from a longstanding CQN’er, who is a shining example of what Celtic is all about.

The Dream Team is your chance to select your team from those who have played 10 or more games during the CQN decade.

Select 11 players in either a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 formation; you’ll need a goalkeeper, two full backs, two central defenders, 3 or 4 midfielders and 2 or 3 forwards.  You also need to select a manager from the decade.

The team judged as the strongest will be announced at the CQteN St Patrick’s Dinner on 14 March.  The event is open to bloggers and lurkers but you can only enter ONCE.  Closing date is 3pm, Sunday 9 March.  There will be prizes!!

For a comprehensive list of players who are eligible for selection, see CRC’s comment here. Email your entry to Doc here, and remember to include a manager: doccqten@gmail.com

If we vote no…..I’ll know what currency we’ll have, I’ll know how much my savings are worth. I’ll know roughly what my pension will be and when I’ll get it. I’ll know which passport I’ll hold. I’ll know if we are in Europe.

Dag and Red have met Plymouth 9 times, won 1, drawn 4.

Mansfield played Fleetwood 7 times, won zero, lost 5.

Hartlepool have not won in 25 visits to Northampton.

Will take dome of the above as draws.

Main bet double Aberdeen and Chelsea.

Might have a wee flutter on Henhousemanure at 16’s.

Lawyers warn against ‘Big Brother’ plans to give every Scottish child a state guardian

The SNP proposes assigning a ‘named person’ to every child

By Simon Johnson, Scottish Political Editor

    6:00AM BST 01 Aug 2013

SNP plans to assign every Scottish child in the country a state guardian amount to “disproportionate” interference with the traditional role of parents, the legal profession has warned ministers.

The Law Society of Scotland attacked the Scottish Government’s plans to give every child a “named person”, who could theoretically be anyone but their mother or father, from birth to the age of 18.

The individual, who would most likely be a social worker or head teacher, would have the legal right to ensure the child is raised in a government-approved manner and report any issues about their upbringing to the authorities.

But, in an official submission, the Law Society warned the move could be illegal under Article 8 of the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR), which protects a parent’s “private and family life”.

The legal experts also warned that the move, which has been included in the The Children and Young People (Scotland) Bill, could be too much for overstretched councils.

The net result would be local authorities overseeing children who do not need help while youngsters who need assistance are neglected, they suggested.

Morag Driscoll, convener of the society’s family law committee said the legislation’s intentions are “admirable” but could result in interference with “a parent’s rights and responsibilities.”

“It could be interpreted as disproportionate state interference. We are also unclear about how this legislation will work in practice and in particular, the resources required to administer the ‘named person’ scheme,” she said.

In a written submission to Holyrood’s education committee, which is conducting an inquiry into the legislation, the Law Society warned that the definition of a “named person” is too broad as it could be anyone but a parent.

Outlining the possibility of a legal challenge under Article 8, the Law Society said it could be argued that the legislation contravened “the parent’s right to respect for private and family life, as there is scope for interference between the role of the named person and the exercise of a parent’s rights and responsibilities.”

While minister do not intent to intrude on the tradition family, the experts warned the legislation could be deemed to amount to “disproportionate state interference”.

They were concerned about the impact of the Bill on another SNP pledge, to increase the minimum number of free child care hours for three and four-year-olds from 475 hours per year to 600.

The overall impact on “early intervention” across the board may lead to too little help being given to the children who actually need assistance, they said.

Liz Smith, Scottish Tory education spokesman, said the legislation “seems to be all about the nanny state, instead of focusing on vulnerable children.”

But a Scottish Government spokesman said: “The named person, who is likely to be a health visitor, head or deputy head teacher and will usually already know the child, will be a first point of contact if help is needed.

“This is formalising what should already happen and there is evidence it is working well in many areas.”

    19th Feb: SNP To Re-Define Family…

Plans to assign every child in Scotland a state guardian could lead to good parents being penalised, an academic has warned ahead of a final vote on the issue in Holyrood later this month.

Sociology lecturer Dr Stuart Waiton said the “secrecy” inbuilt in the SNP’s proposals – which would give children a ‘named person’ to monitor their progress – is a “cause for concern”.

“It will take very little to trigger an investigation into a child and from there a false picture can easily be arrived at”, he said.

    Obsessed

He said innocent aspects of a child’s life such as what they eat or the views they express can make “good parents fair game” in the eyes of “health and safety zealots, obsessed with risk management”.

“It is incredible just how far the state is interfering in the lives of Scots”, he added.

A leading human rights lawyer has warned that under the Children and Young People (Scotland) Bill, a child’s named person – a state employee – would have powers that “cut across” the rights of their parents.

    Private

Aidan O’Neill QC said in a legal opinion that the scheme may not be compatible with the European Convention on Human Rights, which says the state should respect “private and family life”.

Mr O’Neill also described the Bill as “universal in scope” and said the “blanket” provisions allow the state to assign a guardian without assessing a child’s individual need.

He said it is “startling” that the proposal “appears to be predicated on the idea that the proper primary relationship that children will have for their well-being and development, nurturing and education is with the State rather than within their families and with their parents”, he added.

    Consent

Under the Bill a named person would be able to share information with a wide range of public authorities and intervene without parental consent.

Currently, information can be shared without parental consent only if there is a danger of significant harm, but the Bill would enable data to be passed on to a named person without permission if there is a risk to a child’s “wellbeing”.

Nick Pickles, of campaign group Big Brother Watch, said: “This whole scheme is an unprecedented attack on the privacy of families and the civil liberties of law-abiding parents and children.”

The Children and Young People (Scotland) Bill reaches stage 3 in the Scottish Parliament on 19 February, when MSPs will vote on it for the final time.

The Scottish Government has already shown its utter contempt for public opinion by re-defining marriage despite the manifest opposition of the majority of the people of Scotland. Is there any point in contacting MSPs to ask them to reject this latest assault on family life? Should we just roll over and accept that the primary relationship for families now is between the State and children? Or is there anything – anything at all – that we can do to prevent this legislation from being passed?

On the loan, he said: “It’s not concerning. I was down in London on Thursday at the board meeting and, although I wasn’t involved in the business side of the board meeting, I was involved in the football side.

“I was told it was part of the business plan so, if that’s the case, then I would think that’s fine.

“I would still hope there would be investment further down the line, I think it’s safe to say that everybody realises the need for investment and any stage in the future would be great.”

The what we have as you put it , has happened under the current political arrangements , and many of the graphs of economic growth , a general sense of well being are disturbingly trending in the wrong direction.

So a NO vote will do precisely what to stabilise and reverse this trend, in my opinion the only people who give a monkeys about what goes on beyond Hadrian’s Wall are the people that live here. I believe you need to rationally consider an alternative, as the status quo re the current political and economic arrangements have resulted in where we are ,,,,,, the status quo is not a solution for the future.

Reports show there is at least one hundred years of oil left in know fields, with others being being drilled and showing high potential.. ie,

    ===

100 years of oil left, well that’s another stat that has been spun . The fact is North sea production is in decline and has for a number of years. It is true there could be potentially 100 years of oil left but how much will it cost to recover how much profit would there be in doing so! Example If there is an unexploited reservoir with +100 million barrels of oil yet it costs the equivalent value of the oil to extract it who will do it? Facts are the last production figures were down 40% on that achieved in 2010. The oil industry requires a massive upgrade as infrastructure is aging and needs to be replaced this alone costs huge amounts of money that no one wishes to invest. Most of the major oil companies are downsizing their operations in the UK with Shell being the latest to signal their intent to sell their North sea assets, would they do this if there were still huge profits to be made from the region?

Smaller independent companies will undoubtedly buy the assets, as they have in the past, but they will be run on an extremely tight budget with the minimum spend on infrastructure as well as cutting back on numbers of personnel employed. Basically just doing enough to keep the oil flowing, albeit at a much reduced rate, in order to maximise profit.

OPEC are on record as stating the North sea reservoirs are mostly depleted. Obviously the SNP know something the major oil producing nations of the world do not.

Another interesting fact – Revenue received from taxes on the profits of North sea oil in the last decade have been hugely overestimated by the SNP in so much they predicted almost 6 billion pounds more than the ‘actual’ amounts as released by our friends at HMRC – all on public record all the tax receipts from oil and gas production over the past ten years.

The SNP based their Shangri-La vision of an oil rich Scotland on a barrel of oil selling for +/- $180, remember they claim all that oil being worth around 300K to each person living in Scotland (stop laughing) however independent analyst’s agree the average price will be around $93 by 2018. An absolutely massive shortfall in the SNP predications. The most important fact that the SNP fail to mention is that it is not Scotland’s oil in reality it belongs to those who bought the leases for fields foreign oil companies in the main. The SNP always use the Norwegian success as a comparison ”look we can be as rich as them if we could only rid ourselves of those pesky English and Welsh”. However what the SNP fail to mention is that Norway retained ownership and exploits the majority of the leases within its territorial waters through the national oil company Statoil, 100% of profit going to the Norwegian exchequer. The UK only receives, in the main, tax revenue from the profits the oil companies make. The harder the oil is to recover the more tax concessions whatever government in power will have to make to the oil companies which results in much less income overtime.

OPEC are on record as stating the North sea reservoirs are mostly depleted. Obviously the SNP know something the major oil producing nations of the world do not.

To base the future of a people on a dwindling resource with an unpredictable value seems to be ‘a little irrational’.
