Breaking down packed midfields

678

Celtic faced a familiar problem yesterday.  Hearts packed the midfield, which sat close to their defensive line, making it difficult for Celtic to get through, over or wide.  Their best chance in the first half actually came from a Hearts corner kick, one of the few occasions the visitors ventured forward.

Sure, we need to beat Rangers, but dealing with the challenge of teams sitting tight and packing midfield will be key to winning the SPL, and that starts at Perth on Sunday.  St Johnstone will not be in confident mood after their 0-3 pasting at home yesterday, so you can expect them to sit three central midfielders in front of the defence.

    I agree.

We have to boss the midfield and keep opponets penned in their own third.

The Lions used to attack in waves. When the forwards were repelled, Murdoch and Auld were on hand to keep the pressure on. When that was thwarted, Craig and Gemmell were the wide option.

The trick is to move defenders out of their comfort zone. They should never have spare men at the back, blocking the middle of the goal.

Of our present midfield options, Ledley, forrest and, perhaps Commons, have the ability to arrive late into the box. Ki can hit the cut back or a hastey clearance.

    FACT.

MON has not lost his first game at any club he has managed.

  3. Why does Les Gray find it amusing that football supporters ask the police what songs they can or cannot sing? Wasn’t it one of his own who said it was them who would determine what was or was not offensive? Surely, he can’t have it both ways?

I want Scott Brown in there v the Huns as they will bully our young team.

I understand your concerns, but i have no worries if we play Kayal, Wanyama and Ledley in midfield on that day. I cannot see anybody bullying these 3. With either Samaras or Forrest making up the other midfield position and Hooper and Stokes up front.

Jock Stein’s teams had a lot of options. Neil Lennon picks the team and the set-up which he believes gives him a lot of options. He seems to think that we can play with two midfielders, two wide men, and two full backs pushing forward. Nice work if you can get it. Craig and Gemmell were first and foremost defenders who could get forward. Horses for courses.

  9. David Peter Deans

That’s true but they will play 5 in midfield on the 28th and try their bully tactics..

I’d start with Brown, Kayal, Wanyama, Ledley, Samaras. With Sammi making runs knowing he is well covered.

It’s hard to say though eh, Look at how we set up last season when we beat them 3-0.

Your starting to make me think about other team selections haha. It’s a hard one for Lenny, So many good midfielders. HH

  10. Couldn’t agree more with the GQNer who described Stoke. They should have had at least 4 penalties against them. As Mess said of the bankrupt mob from the sou’ side, they play anti-football.

  11. Kojo

Agree on Ledley and Sammi – our best combination down the left. However, once Izzy is back, he will play there, and the quality in our side will go up.

  12. Not read back but a quick comment on our difficulty in breaking down stuffy defences. I think one of the issues was that our balance on the left was all wrong, with Stokesy an Sammi both being right footed. They kept running into the same space.

Hopefully one of our football officiandos can elaborate.

    Hi CQN,

just watched the highlights there on the BBC site. When Hamill was at Kilmarnock the difference in his performance levels, attitude etc between playing against Celtic or the huns was canyonesque.

Pretty sure I watched him play in a hun striker with a soppy back-pass deliberately once at Rugby Park.

So welcome back Scott Brown. He is alive to this kind of chicanery, and is able to stand up to it, probably the only one of our regular starters of whom we can say both of those things.

    Big, big win yesterday.

    Forrest Kayal Wanyama Ledlay Commons

Tight in the middle with the two wingers given a free role.

One must support the centre-forward while the other is delivering. Go

hope that a goal will disrupt their plans – we have the players.

    Kojo says,

Midfield should be Forrest, Kayal, Wanyama and Samaras.

I understand your thoughts on this one, but for me Samaras and Forrest are more wide players leaving us exposed through the middle.

Ledley as done a good job at left back but is a natural midfield player. Izzy is a natural left back. I am one for playing players in there natural positions. With Ledley, Kayal and Wanyama in the middle we have a more solid look. When we play the huns away from home i would also go with Ki in the midfield with just 1 up front. At home we should go with 2 strikers. When we played the huns in the cup last year at ibrox we went with 5 in midfield and thats as dominant as ive seen us against them and we were down to 10 players.

  20. kojo, Don’t normally read through all of ur posts but HAVE TO AGREE that joe ledley has been excellent at left back!!!! I have said all along that joe has been a stand out 4 me what ever position he has played.

…But an on form Commons walks straight back into the side, That Bhoy can change a game in an instant. HH

  23. For me, the best 4 midfielders we can play together: Commons, Kayal, Wanyama & Ledley. My back 4 (if & when they are fit at the same time): Matthews, Dan, Mulgrew & Izzaguirre. I would then play Sammi & Hooper up front. I can’t see many SPL teams troubling us. Then we can choose substitutes from Forrest, who should be given a wee rest, because he is risks burn out, besides being kicked to kingdom come, McCourt, Ki, Brown & the young bhoys, depending on how the game is going.
