Brendan delighted with window as Celtic business complete

691

Brendan Rodgers declared himself delighted with his first transfer window as Celtic manager, which is now over, after the additions of Kolo Toure, Scott Sinclair, Moussa Dembele, Dorus de Vries and Cristian Gamboa.

Toure, Dembele and Sinclair, the managers three primary targets, were acquired early, while de Vries and right back, Gamboa, were added recently. Deals went close to the wire today but the hoped-for midfield player (which was never James McCarthy) didn’t materialise.

A permanent deal for a (known around these parts) central defender to backfill Jozo Simunovic, who was wanted by Torino, couldn’t be tied up either, so Torino also look to have missed their target.

You’ll hear direct from the manager soon enough but he’s got the calibre of recruit he wanted – which he didn’t know would be possible three months ago.

There was never anything possible to make a formidable Champions League group look any easier, but we’ll compete at the top table, and we’ll wipe the floor with all-comers domestically.

More tomorrow.

IMO we need two midfielders. The current crop are not good enough for the EL let alone CL. They were given a lesson last season from the mighty Molde. I hoped, foolishly, that we might spent some money this is window to get one in, then maybe get another in January or even next summer. One defensive/holding midfielder, one more attacking/creative, both with the ability to pass to a teammate under pressure.

Rogic is a no.10 playing behind a striker, I wouldn’t class him as a midfielder.

So who do you reckon would be in budget that we should sign ?

    Any suggestions.

We have a scouting department, the Borussia games will probably decide if we are in Europe after Christmas, a couple of experienced MFs are required, or we can just bank the money and get horsed, we were totally outplayed by an Isreali team last week…

  4. I believed we would add a quality midfielder.

The current midfield will be firefighting for 90% of the CL games.

To capitalize on the 10% opportunity we’ll get, there needs to be a matchwinner in there to help create the few chances we’ll rely on. One killer pass at that level makes all the difference.

My ‘Welcome Xavi’ cake is still in the oven…

  5. If we signed a central defender from Torino, I’m sure we’d all be excited probably without knowing much about the player. We really don’t know yet how good Simunovic is. Hopefully he’s as good as Torino think.

Feckin Lawell and PLC at it yet again. However this time, the parsimony and short sightedness is even more baffling. £30m champs league cash. Merchandise and SB sales excellent.

Our midfield is way off CL standard. However we could have gone some way to improving chances of at least 3rd in group with EL after Christmas.

Basically, the club have spent nothing. AGAIN. Lawell will get a bonus. AGAIN.

    We are mugs.

  7. The CL is a worry. Let’s be clear, the likes of Barca and Man City won’t be messing around. Both will want to top the group and will think nothing of taking 5 off Celtic. The main worry would be that there will be an impact when we return to domestic football in terms of confidence, fatigue and loss of feel good factor. In domestic football our forward players should compensate for any shortfall in other areas of the team. The CL is a different ball game all together. I hope we can emerge with some credibility at least and look to strengthen at a later date. Bigger picture and all that.

  9. Cannot get my head around the angst on here, there are genuine reasons to be unhappy all around us.

Think of the poor people, the poor people who follow the new club on the south side, now they have plenty of reasons not to be cheerful.

Follow our club and see where the journey ends, may may well be that we end up with 2 points in this CL group.mwould a ” Robbie Keane” type signing change that?

  10. How anyone can put a positive spin of our transfer dealings in this window is beyond me. I am sure that Toure, Dembele and Sinclair were not the only targets. I may get stick for this but I would have taken a punt on Balotelli, would have added a bit of excitement. No reason why we could not have went back for JD from Man City, he ain’t getting a game there any time soon under Pep. Don’t care what statement is released BR would have wanted more.

  13. To be honest, I feel deflated now, the money’s in the bank now. Celtic park/parkheid is bursting at seams, CL money being counted and coffered.

Maybe we will catch a straggler on loan to appease us! …we are in a position of strength with a top class manager and some notable signings made already.

Why not let Brendan invest a bit more?

    His choice…. Doubt it.

  14. Doubt that Brendan is delighted at all. Just that he s no real money to play with, despite our supposed financial health and expected millions from the CL.

hard to understand that one, unless there’s other interest Efe is holding out for. He must know there is no point in staying as he’s unlikely to pull on a first team shirt again.

Imagine how much abuse Lawell would get if he wasn’t solely responsible for getting the team playing so well! Imagine if he didn’t bring in Sinclair!

In spite of the progress we appear to be making on the field why do I feel pissed off tonight?

Any deals today were dependent on us getting paid for Simunovic leaving.

If anyone says otherwise they are lying or making it up.

If you need proof of that you are more stupid than you look.

And Paul67 don’t treat me like an idiot please.

If Brendan is delighted with Celtic’s dealings this window he is in PL’s back pocket and that would be a shame.

Away to my bed totally fed up with the pish we are being fed.

Looks like Sky has won the battle of minds on here with all the crazy talk about who we should be signing. All big Pete’s fault of course as he chases his KPI’s and looks for ways to expend his heated driveway to encircle his house.

If we didn’t get the business done early with Toure, Sinclair, Dembele would we be top of the league ? Would people rather we sign these guys on the last day of the transfer window so we get a ticker tape on SSN or take where we are top of the league and in the CL proper ?

It would be nice to get another player in but if it doesn’t happen this window it will happen in the next. I’d rather be where we are now…

  24. mike in toronto on

Disappointed that we didn’t bring in another mid.

I agree with P67 that the present squad should run away with the SPL. In fact, our second string is probably still good enough to win it. But, in Europe? Different story….

And, our seeming favoured formation with two wingers, and SB and NB in the middle, simply does not, and will not work, against decent opponents. That system puts a lot of the weight on the two central mids, and SB and NB simply do not work well together. One (NB) can pass, but doesn’t have much heart, and the other has heart, but not much else. Combined, they make one good player, but it ends up feeling like we are a man short in the middle.

Without a real midfield presence, it means that we cant afford to play the system that we would otherwise prefer with two widemen. We may need to consider (i) dropping SB and/or NB, or (ii) switching to a 5 man mid, in effect having 3 instead of 2 in the middle, and having someone else in the middle beside NB and SB.

Signing deadlines for Champions League …

43.07 List A has to be submitted by the following fixed deadlines:

o 1 September 2016 (24.00CET) for all further matches from the first match in the group stage up to and including the final.

44.01 For all matches from the start of the round of 16, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition. Such registration must be completed by 1 February 2017 (24.00CET) at the latest. This deadline cannot be extended.

  27. Peters puppet spins.

Why would any coach be happy with a glaring weakness in his team not addressed?

Still we have a top class balance sheet.

So many CQNrs told us- it was all in Brendan’s hand.

But then we don’t get the right kind of trainers from our parents at Christmas and the revolution never happened- it’s all back to biscuit tinnery.

I wish some minds would get made up.

  29. I’ve never heard of a manager being “delighted” with a transfer window. Any managers job is to try and push the board to get a higher calibre of player in.

  30. Paul67,

You have no idea if Brendan is delighted. Did you speak to him ? Who told you he was delighted ?

Brendan delivered CL football £30M , added 10k season tickets and we have ICC money. The centre of midfield is weak and Brendan wanted to strengthen it. We also are too dependent on Griifiths. The club has not fully supported Brendan as they should have —so I doubt Brendan is delighted.

As advised before this would come to a showdown between the beancounter and Brendan. It’s 1 nil to the Bonus Thief after this round. I expect Lawwell to repeat and January and Brendan to be back in the EPL next summer.

Yep, in a way Brendan could be delighted —- he is 10 months away from returning to the EPL.

  31. Seriously how must Brendan be feeling, forget the pleased with the window pish.

In his presser after we qualified for the CL last week, he said and I paraphrase, the transfer window for us now explodes.

Pity he didn’t realise then that Pedro would be putting a damper on the explosion.
