Brendan delighted with window as Celtic business complete

691

Brendan Rodgers declared himself delighted with his first transfer window as Celtic manager, which is now over, after the additions of Kolo Toure, Scott Sinclair, Moussa Dembele, Dorus de Vries and Cristian Gamboa.

Toure, Dembele and Sinclair, the managers three primary targets, were acquired early, while de Vries and right back, Gamboa, were added recently. Deals went close to the wire today but the hoped-for midfield player (which was never James McCarthy) didn’t materialise.

A permanent deal for a (known around these parts) central defender to backfill Jozo Simunovic, who was wanted by Torino, couldn’t be tied up either, so Torino also look to have missed their target.

You’ll hear direct from the manager soon enough but he’s got the calibre of recruit he wanted – which he didn’t know would be possible three months ago.

There was never anything possible to make a formidable Champions League group look any easier, but we’ll compete at the top table, and we’ll wipe the floor with all-comers domestically.

More tomorrow.

  1. My friends in Celic,

Sky have made a spectacle of the transfer dealings. And to be fair, having put the blocks in place they do it well.

It is soooooooo easy for us to get caught up in the madness that is predominantly English Football. If we are frustrated, think what is is like for our manager who has been a participant in this money madness in his past life.

He was aware of our limitations when he signed his Ronseal contract.

  2. It really is very hard to sign players you are after – a lot of stars need to align.

Of course, it’s harder still once the transfer window shuts…

  3. Sloleybhoy,

Aye. I posted before reading my own post and adding all relevant information ;)

Great, is it asking too much to expect a list of options in midfield, from across Europe, in midfield that could offer similar value?

Our recent record in recruitment, outside of EPL market is abysmal.

“Balotelli on a free is still paying over the odds by Nice.”

    Ouch!

As for Celtic in Europe, we now just have to hope/trust that Brendan can get more out of the players that we already have. I think he will improve them, for sure. But, will it be enough? Not sure. And I think it may take a major rethink about some players. But, have to try…. not much else to be done.

  6. It wouldn’t be Celtic without some disappointment, as the the transfer market closes, the team is better than when BR arrived, we have offloaded some rank bad signings, and made a few astute moves. All in all the feel good factor at the club which had failed to penetrate all but a few, largely went out the window just before it slammed shut.

We signed early and the rumour build up was incredible to such an extent Celtic fans are left feeling let down. Much of the disappointment is due to where we signed and tried to sign from, not going beyond the UK, is definitely a concern.

Brendan Rodgers plans for a cull have clearly been shot to pieces with chaff that was signed under a previous regime hanging round the club like the proverbial. Contracts handed out like confetti has left us ‘as predicted’ before we sacked RD with at least another two windows, to get rid. Decisions were made players were told, but the squad is still too big, leaking money on wages for a ‘keep fit’ club

But hanging on with not a cat in hells chance of getting a game is the fault not of the players concerned but the dreadful decisions that were panic made to buy cheap under a failing regime because it was good enough to scrape past Aberdeen.

No intention of ‘big signing midfielder’ for this window underlined with 4-1 last Saturday and being top of the league in jig time, despite playing a game less. Celtic don’t spend millions on a midfielder for a group in which we are about to be dollied, but cover at least would be a good idea, no chance of a talisman, the midfield weakness hasn’t been addressed despite progress to the groups.

It doesn’t matter how you spin it, to a Celtic fan its still £30M earned by the CL inclusion, we hadn’t even finished celebrating.

If you look hard enough, really hard enough you can always find excuses for not investing in the squad. I am actually surprised that BrExit has not been used because everything else has.

We got it right at the beginning — Went large and brought in BR.

We then have a whole raft of challenging team selections — just to show suits who the stiffs are where the gaps can be found.

Then it is a race to get some confidence and coaching into the squad and then drip feed some new blood while trying to qualify.

All the planning then comes down to 44 minutes in the Negev where we have to hang on to a one goal lead for grim death as the weaknesses at RB and MF are shown up in techno colour by a workaday team comprising 4 talents and 7 stiffs.

    So what happens?

We fill the hole at RB in an efficient vert VFM manner and then we wait …

… And wait and wait for the keystone to be identified and delivered.

… Here’s hoping something might happen.

… But more in hope than expectation.

    Consequently we are moving forward.

But we seen to be doing so in a very bonus friendly manner.

Net spend seems to be very low indeed it could be zero if sell on clauses are included.

So for the record we have no shortage of funds even before the CL money arrives.

The fact that BR was prepared to sell JS suggests that the strings are being pulled very tight.

  8. Sky sports deadline day is absolute rubbish now.

No Harry Redknapp,No schoolboys jostling the outside broadcasters wi their inflatables and the look of fear on their faces and Jim White still trying to make it exciting.

Whilst I’m not disappointed with the transfer window I’ve had problems logging onto Cqn but can’t find a quote from Brendan

    Anyway

    God bless

  11. In spite of crushing disappointment, not to say a great deal of frustration, this window isn’t a total write off.

The reason so many people are frustrated, even angry, is that expectations were sky high. And we had a right to those expectations, and still do. Brendan didn’t come here with the sole purpose of winning ten in a row. He came to rebuild our reputation in Europe, and spending less than £1 million in the aftermath of qualifying for the Groups of the Champions League is a typically weak response.

But are we in better shape than we were? Damned right we are.

The prospect of watching this team – Brendan’s team – dismantling our new opponents, at a packed Celtic Park, whilst their media lackies and criminal chairman looks on … oh yes.

    Tantalising.

I am a miserable sod, maybe. I always want more.

Was McCarthy really too much to ask? ;)

  14. It is what it is. I’m a happy clapper usually, football wise anyway.

But I must confess, given the recent influx of money, or the prospect of it arriving within the season at any rate, I am slightly concerned with the lack of an upgrade in midfield.

Yes, we will beat the domestic opposition week in week out with the odd blip along the way. But I fear it means more of Nir bitton slowing down the play and making broony half the player he could be. In my opinion.

Still, we are where we are. We have a better squad, better starting 11. Better manager. Better start to the season.

It’s an improvement but i had thought we would have had plans a, b and c in place to spend some of the big intake of money we are experiencing.

Maybe there are plans for Jan of next summer. We will see.

  15. James, better now than at the start of the window?

A new manager, striker, winger, CB, RB and goalie?

It is for me, but you knew that:-)

And, just a question, hope you don’t mind, when do we actually bank the CL money?

It’s not actually available in our account now is it?

Of course he is gonna say he is delighted, party line n awe that, it’s called politics FFS.

Maybe he can fill the defending-midfield position we need filled. I like the guy too. Seems a nice man and there’s a fine player in him. I’d like to see him have a couple of games in behind midfield. We don’t need ‘2-up-front’ with the wingers we have so it’d be a good time to find a place in the team.

I am actually happy with the business we have done, we are deffo stronger that we were a few weeks ago, but we have a glaring hole in the middle of the team, BR has said on a few occasions that he wanted to strengthen there and we haven’t.

HBS were all over us like a rash last week, our mid is nowhere good enough to compete at a euro level, one quality player in there could have made all the difference, it may well not have, but BR wanted someone in, he didn’t get what he wanted, bottom line.
