Brendan delighted with window as Celtic business complete

691

Brendan Rodgers declared himself delighted with his first transfer window as Celtic manager, which is now over, after the additions of Kolo Toure, Scott Sinclair, Moussa Dembele, Dorus de Vries and Cristian Gamboa.

Toure, Dembele and Sinclair, the managers three primary targets, were acquired early, while de Vries and right back, Gamboa, were added recently. Deals went close to the wire today but the hoped-for midfield player (which was never James McCarthy) didn’t materialise.

A permanent deal for a (known around these parts) central defender to backfill Jozo Simunovic, who was wanted by Torino, couldn’t be tied up either, so Torino also look to have missed their target.

You’ll hear direct from the manager soon enough but he’s got the calibre of recruit he wanted – which he didn’t know would be possible three months ago.

There was never anything possible to make a formidable Champions League group look any easier, but we’ll compete at the top table, and we’ll wipe the floor with all-comers domestically.

More tomorrow.

  2. FFS just what do people expect? Rodgers has come in and put his stamp on the team, We are FAR, FAR stronger now than we were at the end of last season. Manager is stronger; team is stronger; football is better; atmosphere is much better at Celtic Park.

5 new players in and some deadwood gone.

Because we didn’t make a CM signing doesn’t mean the club weren’t trying. It doesn’t always work out as planned. It won’t make any significant difference to our ability to win the SPL; it won’t make any difference to our prospects in Europe. Rodgers will integrate all 5 new players into the team. Jozo Simunovic may come good and we can move Erik into midfield!

Devastation Day is on 10th September – look forward to it. Barca, Man City and Monchengladbach are coming – look forward to it!

What a hollow hollow claim that is.

    How about

CQN. Defending the board and pulling the wool over your eyes since 2012?

  4. It ain’t easy to get them out, it ain’t easy to get them out. It will take Brendan 3 windows to get his squad right.

Kris, Izzy and Efe are out of contract at season’s end that is often the only way to cull the squad.

So far I’m happy with what I’ve seen from, Toure,Sinclair & Dembele, hopefully de Vries and Gamboa will also be decent. We are getting there it’s just going to take a little bit longer then maybe we would have liked.

  5. TET, agree with what you say, but we can’t say BR responsible for bringing in the players and its PL’s fault for those who didn’t arrive!

    http://thecelticblog.com/2016/08/blogs/celtics-transfer-window-shuts-leaving-fans-and-the-manager-short-changed/

Short-changed, rather than absolutely conned. But still not happy, and when the CEO gets his bonus for the fiscal year 2016-17 on the back of big profits this notion that every penny we spend goes back out on the team will have been exposed for the utter guff that it is.

Over the piece I’ve got to be happy that we’re in better shape than we were, but the credit belongs to Brendan and no-one but.

  10. I’m sure Brendan Rodgers is happy with who he has brought in but would have liked at least a central midfielder more and maybe get several others out of the club. He has strengthened us in goals, in defence and up front but we are weaker in central midfield.

  11. blantyretim is praying for the Knox family on

Brendan said he wanted more and we watched it on TV

We are now told he is happy.

January maybe when the rest of his signings come in and like MON he may wait for his 1st choice midfield player but we can’t be questioned about our CEO and his main priority, his bonus

  13. Surely after the performance of Jamsie and McGregor in the qualifier last week and the suspect stamina of Tom Rogic it was important to strengthen that area of the team.It would be good to compete in the group stages and not just congratulate ourselves on being there.

  14. Paul67,

No quote from Brendan. This is a made up comment which you were given by Lawwell or you just invented it yourself.

Brendan would never give you such a quote.

The manager has not been supported after delivering the CL and an extra 10k season tickets.

It shows also that Lawwell does not appreciate how Brendan is operating having sidelined his puppet John Park and the Celtic scouting system.

The power struggle is on in the background as I posted would happen early doors. By this made up headline about our manger it’s clear which side you are on– no surprise there.

At least when you write a Headline about the manager of Celtic FC you have the decency to actually check if it is accurate.

  15. We’ve appointed Brendan Rodgers which was pretty much beyond our wildest dreams, signed Scott Sinclair, Kolo Toure and Moussa Dembele. Players with a combined relative market value of £30 million. Throw in DDV, Gamboa and Ajer and the emergence of O’Connell and it looks good from where I’m sitting.

McCarthy is a good player but would he really make that much of a difference? At £10+ million and £50k a week, not for me. I’ve seen nothing to suggest BR even wanted him.

I agree we could do with a midfielder but it needs to be one that BR wants so we’ll need to be patient.

You’re like a wean screaming and stamping it’s feet.

The facts are we have added 5 players, 2 have been vast improvements, Dembelle too.

The latest 2, we can trust the manager given his successes so far?

Now 5 new players is a major overhaul, with further enhancements in an appropriate timetable, is the way to go.

3 transfer windows for what? Who said we need 3 transfer windows? Who said we even need any more transfer windows?

If you think we haven’t done enough to win domestically, then I must disagree. If you think 3 transfer windows where ‘Peter’ spends all his cash will win us the Champions League, again, I must disagree.

Are you not confident in the players?

  19. Hunderbirds are Gone on

One extra signing may not have made much difference.

Third place was our only realistic target for our Champions League group anyway. It still is. It will entirely boil down to the games against BMG. I suspect they will win at home, I hope that we can win at home. These are the only points either BMG and Celtic will win in this group.

So we just have to beat them, better than they beat us to progress to the Europa League, which I repeat can be our only realistic target at this stage.

Well as I said before let’s hope we score more than 3 and concede less than 14 like last time

  21. Mr Forrest, love your insights to all thing’s Celtic. I Think bit harsh on signings. I do think within our bloated squad. There is enough to gain Europa league challenges. I personally think next year is where we will have a squad that will challenge in the later stages of CL.

Good young players at Park head. Give them the belief.

  22. West End of East End on

First up to complain are the same people who admit they wont put a penny into the club or go watch the team until “their” expectation / vision for a team they no longer support happens. As predictable as it is risible.

Wont be long to wait on the fascist / racists comments….

  23. Vfr do I really need to explain it. The whole of Scotland has been telling the big lie to get us back to allowing the racism to continue. Including those who run Celtic. We have seen cheating and corruption on an industrial scale.

But here you are salivating at the thought of playing the Hun again.

    It’s simply rank hypocrisy.
