Brendan delighted with window as Celtic business complete

691

Brendan Rodgers declared himself delighted with his first transfer window as Celtic manager, which is now over, after the additions of Kolo Toure, Scott Sinclair, Moussa Dembele, Dorus de Vries and Cristian Gamboa.

Toure, Dembele and Sinclair, the managers three primary targets, were acquired early, while de Vries and right back, Gamboa, were added recently. Deals went close to the wire today but the hoped-for midfield player (which was never James McCarthy) didn’t materialise.

A permanent deal for a (known around these parts) central defender to backfill Jozo Simunovic, who was wanted by Torino, couldn’t be tied up either, so Torino also look to have missed their target.

You’ll hear direct from the manager soon enough but he’s got the calibre of recruit he wanted – which he didn’t know would be possible three months ago.

There was never anything possible to make a formidable Champions League group look any easier, but we’ll compete at the top table, and we’ll wipe the floor with all-comers domestically.

More tomorrow.

Indeed that is correct mate, my point was more that he preferred to wait and get who he wanted rather than sign someone else. Seems perfectly plausible to me that BR thinks similarity. Further, the Seville team was not built within three months of MON arriving, we need to give BR two possibly three Windows before he’s got the team he wants.

I’m far from convinced by Brown and Bitton but BR isn’t daft. He’ll come up solutions. McGregor is adequate for most of the domestic matches.

QF, Neganon is a Tim, a negative one, but a Tim, and one I have met.

Doc, I want proof, positive proof and not just your word on it :-)

  4. BR also said on Saturday that the squad was too big. It is very difficult to get rid of players on good money with no ambition.

DB EA LH KC SA and GMS all surplus to requirements…all still cluttering up the place.

BR stated he wanted a creative midfielder and that the club knew the identity of that player. Who was it and why did the club not get him? There might be a perfectly good explanation so let’s hear it

We also only have two strikers and NC.

    ———-

He didn’t say that to my knowledge.

I appreciate you explaining that to me. I’m not wanting to bash your every word, like many on here do. But, how can you come to the conclusion that my ambition for the club peaks at the domestic title(s)? That’s not the case at all. I want the very best for the club & fans but I’m willing to wait for it.

See the bright side. There’s so much to be positive about! Enjoy it. HH!

    Delusional.

I wonder how conflicted Paul really is.

MON was given a hell of a budget in that first summer and built his team over about a year or so (up to Hartson/Sylla signings in 2001). That squad then stayed together for the next four years. I’ll be delighted in BR takes us away from the transfer strategy of the last few years and waits and signs players who will go into the team rather than stockpiling mediocrity.

Would have been nice if, for a change, we pushed the boat out to get him the midfielder he said he wanted.

  11. By the way the Ambrose story is probably a Level 5 GIRUY story and one to give the Huns a laugh. The same Huns that were played over the mysterious Waghorn interest, designed to keep them from asking for more signings and just be happy to hang onto him.

With respect I could manage the team in scotland and win the league, anyone who has half a football brain could imo. Not in europe tho, it’s a very different ball game, BR found out when he was at the pool that europe was harder that most reckon it is, as he will with Celtic.

The players at our disposal are NOT good enough for europe, the defence could be if they had protection, they don’t, it’s as simple as that.

  15. you posted about Mowbray a few weeks ago. I pointed it out at that time and you never responded. I assumed it was at the same time as the team started getting good results so your absence was no real surprise. you don’t like here being too positive.

No new striker. If Griff is injured we have had it.

Really disappointing but not surprising. Usual excuses will be fed to us.

JF – cheers. Think we need to lighten up just a wee bit.

Hail hail and good night all.

  18. QF I posted about Mowbray? Err don’t think so. What did I allegedly say?

As for the non posting thing. I have posted after most games etc. But hey it doesn’t suit the script so who cares.

Last two games he has missed we won 5-0 and 7-0. Calm down.

  20. i’ve not seen any reporting on BR being “delighted” with this window. Its not been a terrible window but its very underwhelming and stinks of business before ambition – not even the slightest bit of risk taken.

The team severely lacks physicality and we have not addressed this from middle to front. Now that we have kept the big center, perhaps lustig or sviechenko can play midfield for some presence.

I get the build slow and deliberate process but we are lambs to the slaughter in UEFA champs league now – thanks for that board and enjoy your juicy bonus!

  21. Not too unhappy as we’ve made some good signings early in the window that have got us into the UCL and top of the league.

Would have liked to have added to our midfield but think we’ve got some great young talent who may benefit as a result of not signing for this position.

    Onwards and upwards.

    Hail hail.

I don’t think you are an agent I’m just not sure based on the times you pop up. I think it’s more likely that you are the sort of fan that they know they can feed a line to and that you are so predictable you will give them what they want. there are loads of you out there so don’t feel special.

ps – I think I have got you confused. sonebody else with Mowbray. it might have been John Collins for you.

  23. QF John Collins? Don’t think so.

    But honest I am special.

BR said it after the St Johnstone game in the press conference.

“I would like to add another creator to our game so if we could get someone of that ilk in that would be great,” he explained over the weekend. “Hopefully we can get that done.”

I will try to find the full video for you

  25. The one thing that has been consistent during Lawless tenure is the teams shortcomings are never addressed.

Would like to put it down to him being just unlucky but considering the massive amount he has earned from the club it’s more likely he is unwilling.

That in a time when the football landscape is evolving we seem happy to be considered as fodder in European competitions.

Yes our financial landscape is challenging but thats partly due to the lack of imagination of those running the club.

I have no idea if we intended to strengthen the team in this window and failed but if thats the case we need a better guy than Lawell who has been consistent in this regard.

  26. Timhorton,

Lawwell threw Ronny under the bus after supporting him one year more than he should have. Lawwell knew he was failing and sounded him some “Tims” for their views. After the semi final defeat Ronny was discarded.

Lawwell has left Brendan with a massive challenge to even win a point in the CL. If we get hammered in the first 2 CL games the BM game will be season defining for Brendan and if the Team does not deliver Brendan will be in a very lonely place.

Lawwell will be sitting in the Directors box quietly chuckling that the next 2/3 seasons bonus are secured taking his loot to £13M and counting. Brendan already knows he has been shafted and so will players like Sinclair, Toure who will see a second choice WBA right back as a candid camera prank.

Brendan will be thinking thru his options. Having joined Celtic he is free from the Liverpool garden leave golden handcuffs. He is on a rolling 12 month contract which is not an issue for any maurading EPL club. Celtic today pushed our manager towards the exit door.

Lawwell knew exactly what he was doing by failing to deliver a deal on the targets he was given.

If we finish the CL with zero points and are out of Europe before Christmas I would not blame the manager for walking. It’s a complete insult what the club have done to him today. To make up a story that he is happy is beyond the pale.

Dermot knew he had a problem with the interfering CEO. Unfortunately he failed to fix it properly—still not too late. It’s either Brendan or the Control freak—sack Lawwell and let the people sing.

  27. I tried to temper expectations only 5 days ago when we had posters talking about 10 and 15M spends.

Macjay was one poster happy to spend 15M before the window closed and now Macjay is happy we have spent 400 grand.

VFR disagreed with me saying we shouldn’t hope we spend 10M strengthening but we should expect it.

Again once it doesn’t transpire VFR Is now telling disappointed posters that they should be happy with beating the rest in our league.

VFR no offence you’re posts are all over the shop, as for Macjay well he just backs the board whatever transpires, so no surprise there.

My opinion is that we have strengthened well, but we have a major weakness in midfield and it is criminal not to have improved that area.

Paul’s leader is basically saying we’ll win the league anyway and it would have not made any difference in CL.

I think that is missing the point, improving the team should be the priority no matter what, that’s what the fans deserve for their tremendous backing.

  28. Captain Beefheart on

I wish Efe and Emilio well as they haven’t whined in the paper. Still don’t think Efe is a bad footballer, far from it, but he never recovered from the Juve game. Can’t see us moving these guys on.

We’re fooked in Europe anyway. Bottom of the group even if we spent £15 million today. It’s a damage imitation exercise.

  30. Transfer window closed with the sound of a wet fart.

Paul you can’t be serious about Brendan.

    Delighted or shocked?

If we cannot strengthen from here…when can we? Barcelona, Man City & BM How many cherries must be dangled afore players will say

    “Fuck ye bring it on!”
