Brendan Rodgers appointed Celtic manager

1136

Brendan Rodgers today became the 18th manager in Celtic’s history. Rodgers, 43, managed Liverpool for three years until October, after guiding Swansea to the English (and Welsh) Premier League in 2011. He previously managed Reading and Watford.

His appointment is unquestionably the most popular since the arrival of fellow Irishman, Martin O’Neill, 16 years ago. Known for his belief in playing attacking, possession-based football, he will bring a force of personality to the club and to Scottish football.

Rodgers occupied the top position on Celtic’s wanted list at the start of the month, but the desire to sign him up was tempered by the belief that attracting a manager of such a profile to Scotland would be difficult. My understanding is that as soon as talks got underway in earnest, it was clear neither party would let the opportunity slip away.

I’m delighted at the appointment. The club already feels reinvigorated.

Welcome to Celtic, Brendan. Let’s get on with the job.

  1. I must say I’m happy for Ronny.

For all his limitations, he did his best for us and tonight he should feel a bit of satisfaction that he made way for a manager of BR’s calibre.

It will also be very interesting to see how many squad changes are made in the next few months.

Obviously, we all hope BR can ‘hit the ground running’, but he can surely have little genuine knowledge of most of the current squad, so there remains a real risk of non-progression in next season’s CL campaign.

    Interesting times, indeed …

  2. Sky Polls is it……………?

  3. Some mad bunch of football supporters are putting together a statement that could cause more than a little embarrassment to a local media that hitherto agreed a wee conspiracy of silence regarding a report on the Rangers Tax Scandal and the role of the SFA.

Now before the dam bursts one is about to break ranks and tell all – before the inevitable astonishment from hacks down south and on the continent is expressed, much to their professional shame.

Things are about to get interesting. Very interested.

    Oh is it time?

  4. Well done to the Celtic board and I include PL in that. Massive achievement considering the fact that Scottish football is a back water.

  5. Great to see Brendan Rodgers @ Celtic.

It’s a great fit. I’m sure he’ll have some thoughts on his Coaching and backroom staff but I had a cheap pop at Peter Houston t’uther day (Someone suggested that we would appoint Rodgers and Houston) but if Brendan wants a guy in his squad that knows Scottish Football inside out and has an eye for a young player and knows how to develop them, then he could do a lot worse.

    Hail Hail

  6. Feel a bit smug tonight. Posted weeks ago that only something spectacular would get Tic out of hole that they were digging for themselves.

Let’s hope that one of Brendan’s first priorities is to weed out those in dressing room who undermined RD.

Thank you, sir, your good news is rounding off a perfect evening. The persistence of you ghuys is amazing as has been the support on CQN.

Truth will out. Still need the adverts to go ahead though. The clarion call has to be heard and, perhaps, repeatedly. Wonder what real journalists furth of Scotland think of the soi-disant journalists, rather propagandists, in Scotland, La lucha continua hasta la victoria. HH

As a staunch critics of messrs Desmond & Lawwell I have to eat a bit of humble pie and congratulate them on the appointment of our new manager. Something big had to happen and this is it! Felt the same way I did when Martin stood on the steps of Paradise and addressed the fans. Well done gents, you have restored some of my faith in the custodians of our great club.

  16. Was unfortunate enough to hear Jim White comment on Brendan’s appointment and SKY’S warped poll. SKY so hun biased and mentioning them at every opportunity. Had enough……SKY sports cancelled.

Absolutely disgraceful behaviour by Celtic to make such an announcement on the eve of a cup final between a team which has not won the Scottish Cup for 114 years and a team which has never won it.

I, for one, am disgusted by this shameful conduct.

Winning …. for me, your post is even bigger and better news than the Rogers appointment. Here’s hoping that it brings about some real change in the way scottish football is run.

  19. Absolutely delighted at the news about Brendan.A great appointment.Texts have not stopped since the announcement. Even went on facebook to wind up hun friends and family.A manager that has a track record at the highest level.Works with great players and makes them greater(Suarez) and plays attractive football. Well done Celtic for making this happen but most of all thank you Brendan as I am sure you may earn more money elsewhere. To me though you have got the 2nd best job in the world!(Apart from being a father which is the hardest but best job):-)

    She’s an unforgiving bitch.

  21. Wow just wow Celtic I’ve got 3 ST’s in the family, 2 were at risk, no longer, this has reinvigorated my two bhoys they will now renew, hopefully we are back to the 50k ST holders and a full stadium every week. This is a massive statement of intent from our board and goes a long way to restoring my faith in our leadership.

  22. I’m not raining on the parade…honest!

    It is a fantastic appointment.

    Two things come to mind….

    1. I trust BR will be able to bring in his own choice as his assistant.

    2. If there is money available now, why was it not available for NL once old club was gone?

Was the strategic decision to deliberately downsize while Ibrox was gone? I think we’ve made profits…have these been stockpiled waiting the day of the new Ibrox appearing?

    Just asking!

    Still thrilled though.

  27. It is a fantastic appointment and I have full confidence that Brendan Rodgers wants to be here and has the potential to recognise the potential that we already have in-house plus the judgement to see that we have a few chancers who need to move on. But he needed us too. Nobody was chapping at his door at the top level. He needs to prove himself with relatively limited resources. We offer limited resources and fanatical popular support for the right guy.

We have offered Brendan the chance to show again his ability to develop a squad. We have also given him a relatively secure route to Euro football which was more tenuous with Liverpool, Swansea, etc. We have given him a stage again. No-one else has offered him that since October 2015. He deserves the chance and I am glad we have given him the chance. But it annoys me that we do not know the terms of his engagement. It is a stellar appointment which will result in the necessary season ticket renewals which will fund the package agreed with Brendan Rogers. But we have no idea, as always, about what it has cost us. We have no commitment longer-term. Clubs in England and elsewhere will be able to offer him a hundred times as much as we can as soon as they are sure he is a safe bet so lets not get too carried away.

I like Brendan Rogers’ approach. I think he will see the talent and the waste in our squad and sort it out and I think he will lead us to a league victory which is our only real challenge (I’m not interested in winning diddy cups / trebles, etc.). He also has the tactical nous that Strachan, Lennon and Delia lacked so I am really looking forward to the new season. But let’s get real – we are the core or this club but we have limited impact on the big decisions. The money men rule.

  28. Reading CQN tonight is an absolute joy, just fantastic when we are all United

  29. Can anyone clarify that Brendan visited family in East Kilbride, got my daughter biting my I ear that I talk rubbish and spend too much time on CQN.:))
