Brendan Rodgers appointed Celtic manager

1136

Brendan Rodgers today became the 18th manager in Celtic’s history. Rodgers, 43, managed Liverpool for three years until October, after guiding Swansea to the English (and Welsh) Premier League in 2011. He previously managed Reading and Watford.

His appointment is unquestionably the most popular since the arrival of fellow Irishman, Martin O’Neill, 16 years ago. Known for his belief in playing attacking, possession-based football, he will bring a force of personality to the club and to Scottish football.

Rodgers occupied the top position on Celtic’s wanted list at the start of the month, but the desire to sign him up was tempered by the belief that attracting a manager of such a profile to Scotland would be difficult. My understanding is that as soon as talks got underway in earnest, it was clear neither party would let the opportunity slip away.

I’m delighted at the appointment. The club already feels reinvigorated.

Welcome to Celtic, Brendan. Let’s get on with the job.

It us only a few short days ago that PL stated that our strategy would not change.

There seems to be a general euphoria amongst the Celtic support that Brendan Roders signing is a sign that he is about to be handed a larger budget to sign players than Ronny Deila would have been given.

In short ,We are about to splash the cash.

I just don’t see this happening.

    What is your opinion ?

    TT

He will have to have a clear out to generate funds.

I would guess that there is a neat get out clause in his contract.

Well done on the ad – lang may yer lum reek………….!.

Re previous comment as to your meeja contact. Doesn’t make sense to me -if they have the dirt on “eat-the-breid” then why wait to splash it all over the front ‘n’ back pages………..?

It’s not like they ever waited when one of ours was concerned…………………oh, wait….

With the Dallas Cowboys “officiating” the likelihood of a Hibs-borne upset is unlikely.

“We have been told on many an occaision that..

    – All money is ploughed back into the team ”

This is another of those myths that has survived repeated attempts at correction:-

What Peter Lawwell said was “club” not “team” and a cheap point cannot be made confusing those terms.

The quote, from 2014 was ‘In terms of investment our policy our commitment is that every penny that comes into the club will be reinvested, it will go back into the club. I do not think we can be clearer than that.”

The whole article contains other interesting revelations/ defences by PL himself. Sorry that it is from the Daily Mail but it is an interview where his own words are not “interpreted” or “mis-transcribed”by the journo.

    I had mixed thoughts really.

Whilst I thought it was funny .

I also thought it was a heap shot and slightly unbecoming of our CEO.

It was also an isolated comment.

I would have preferred a far more formal ,legalised and concerted form of statement.

It came across as a cheap shot, but it was funny.

  7. TT,

Thanks for the response – at the time I was surprised too……… it was flippant and didn’t think it was the right comment or the right time for us to make reference to thems…………

……however, over time, given the banana republic that scoddish fitba / Hampden is………then………making a joke of their miraculous claims seems that bit more appropriate – we rubbished their notions without having to roll in the muck with them.

The mouth-breathers in their support just blanked it out, but the others know that we know……..

  10. Very late to the party due to work commitments but Welcome to Paradise Brendan. Great to see the club show the ambition we all want from the board with Brendan’s appointment. Exciting times ahead for us all.

If he can mould this young core group of players into the team we all think they can become the the future looks good. Personally I would not put too much pressure on CL qualification this summer and give him the season ahead to create a winning, exciting team that plays the way we like our team to play, although it would be a great achievement if we did qualify.

    HEADTHEBALL on 21ST MAY 2016 11:45 AM

Who did Brendan have as assistants at his previous clubs?

At both Swansea & Liverpool his Assistant was Colin Pascoe, although he did sack Pascoe in 2015 when results started to dip citing they needed a change. He then took on Sean O’Driscoll as Assistant and Gary McCallister as coach towards the end of his Liverpool days. It will be interesting to see who he chooses as his management team for us.

I agree with you. Whilst it was a fantastic day in the Sun last Sunday, winning 7-0, it did cross my mind would we have been allowed to score 7 and pass the ball so freely had Motherwell needed something out of the game. That said it was a fantastic day.

    Keep the Faith!

Let’s say we’d kept Ronny. What would have constituted progress? A better run in the Europa league and one of the cups?

That being said, we didn’t. We have replaced him with a new manager, and not just any manager.

Had we gone for Neil Lennon, what would we have been happy with? Presumably something similar to the above/a bit more?

We have employed a manager at the peak of our reach and are paying him £1.7m a year. What, therefore, should Celtic fans regard as sufficient progress?

  14. Complaint e-mailed to BBC re Mike Bushel’s announcement that sevco had won the cup 33times. Hunbelievable.

    Hail! Hail!

  15. The Squad? I think we have a good core of players for the SPL. I think Ronnie’s downfall was not getting them to play as a team, but when they did it was great to watch. I would like to see the fringe players shipped out and a smaller squad with the youngsters feeling they have the chance to get into the first team..

  16. SETTING FREE THE BEARS @ 12:27 PM,

Well good point, I’m not disagreeing with that…

The point I was trying to make was that all things being equal, we budget for Scottish Football and we have, in general, got to sell plàyers to buy.

Now in that piece from the Daily Mail – which I thought did PL justice in his latest interview, in the more honest Q&A format he comes across better – Peter L states…

‘The push for spend, spend, spend is just too simple, too superficial. You need to be cleverer especially in Scottish football environment.

Now the “bonus” money we got from Lenny’s UCL campaigns and the large transfer deficit of the time was NOT spent.

Looks like it might be “re-invested” now though..:)

Maybe Celtic PLC are playing it smarter than we/I credited.
