BRENDAN SETS NEW CHALLENGE

BRENDAN RODGERS watched Celtic stuff five goals into the Dundee United net as the rampant Parkhead men sealed the fourth successive title at Tannadice yesterday.

Coincidentally, it was the Irishman’s personal quadruple of Premiership crowns over his two stints as Hoops gaffer.

However, Rodgers is still NOT satisfied and has set his players a new goal target.

When Adam Idah snapped onto a deft pass from Callum McGregor and whipped a low drive past the despairing Jack Walton to make it 5-0 for the visitors, the Republic of Ireland international was claiming the champions’ 102nd league goal of another successful campaign.

TON-UP BHOY…Nicolas Kuhn celebrates Celtic’s 100th league goal and his 20th strike at Tannadice.

However, that tally is short of the 106 strikes clocked up by The Invincibles that swept all before them in the treble-winning debut crusade of the former Liverpool manager.

Rodgers said: “We had 106 that season and we were on 97 when we started today.

“So we’re in a good place to challenge that.”

The Hoops have four league games still to play in their efforts to equal and better the total of eight years ago. They are scheduled to visit Ibrox a week today and Pittodrie in the midweek encounter on May 14.

They also have two matches at home, against Hibs a week on Saturday and St Mirren on May 17 also known as Flag Day.

HEADMASTER…Adam Idah leaps to nod No.4 past Dundee United keeper Jack Walton.

Rodgers saw the team’s scoring rate drop off in season 2017/18 with 73 goals scored and last term the side collected 95 on his comeback campaign.

The team chief, though, looked at his defence and, speaking to The Scotsman, added: “But also important are our goals conceded. We’re even less than last year.

“If you look at that record, we wanted to beat that 2016/17 team as well, which was very good defensively. We’re on course for that, too.”

In Rodgers’ debut crusade, Craig Gordon was beaten 25 times and, ironically, he also conceded the same amount in the following term.

Last season, Joe Hart was required to pick the ball out of the net on 30 occasions and in the current programme the defence has been breached 22 times.
