Brendan takes an early psychological lead

332

I listened to Brendan give due credit to St Mirren at the weekend, and then to the granular analysis of his comment that they were the best Scottish opposition we have faced this season, and recalled an old story.

Archie Macpherson, a good friend of Jock Stein, told me that Jock would make sure he controlled the headlines in the week ahead of playing Rangers. He set the agenda by giving the media ready-made material.

Brendan’s assertion was not fanciful. Whatever has gone on in St Mirren’s season, their recent wins over Hibs and Ayr United, and their performance on at the weekend, they have clearly turned a corner. They were unequivocally better prepared for Celtic Park than most of the Premiership teams who have visited this season. If it was a stretch to say they were the best, at 56 minutes into the game it didn’t feel like one.

Kilmarnock (conceded 6), Motherwell (5), Newco (5), Aberdeen (4) and Hearts (4) were each clueless at Celtic Park this season, so there is a degree of accuracy in manager’s observation.

The Rangers Stein faced is a different proposition entirely from that which Brendan Rodger’s will be up against on Sunday (literally), but Brendan has taken an early psychological lead, whether he needs it or not.

    Indeed .

As was Paris after the game ..

Leeds were hard to warm to. . That game featured a memorably awful “tackle ” from the delightful Terry Yorath ..

Apparently Wilson needs 24 hours to make up his mind. That was from about four days ago.

Although to be fair, nobody said it was 24 consecutive hours. It could be an hour a day for the next 24 days…..

Honestly, Kris is getting on a bit and he’s had a lot of injuries. I don’t think he’s mobile enough for Brendan.

If he was willing to take 75% of his salary he could have been paid off and playing for Hibs. He wanted 100% and he’s still here.

Has that been agreed? All I’ve seen is that he’s turned down a deal at Chelsea.

He’s been linked with the likes or Arsenal, Liverpool and FC Bayern. So it’d be tough to convince him to come here.

Your posts here are always a great read whether about football , Rubentus being Rubentus or music.

With regard to refs in some of Leeds’ european games. The Leeds teams under Revie were a real nasty bunch who got away with a lot in England.

    Enjoy your trip.

  14. Here’s one…. If Celtic win the league in March would you play some youngsters from then on?

Would staying undefeated mean that much? We could be giving games to Bailly, Kolo, Miller, Gamboa, Kouassi, Henderson & Aitchison.

Surely it’d be good for the dressing room if these guys get a platform to strut their stuff?

  15. Craig Gordon has signed his new deal at Celtic .

The 34-year-old is staying at Parkhead until at least 2020 after agreeing a new three-and-a-half year contract with the CHAMPIONS.

The internet understands Gordon completed the formalities and paperwork this morning and confirmation of the deal could be announced officially by the club within the next 24 hours.

Without so much as a by or leave, (and I can’t find anything on the UEFA site) England, Germany, Italy and Spain are now guaranteed four places each in the Champions League from 2018 onwards, as part of, or in conjunction with the new deal with BT. Think about that for a moment, as opposed to St Mirren for example, four countries will take up half of the group stages around 18 months from now. Or in other words the other 50 UEFA members will somehow compete for the other 16 places. (So much for Big Pete’s 48 team CL) Now obviously we aspire to qualify for said group, especially given that the BT is paying nearly £400 mill pa for the privelege, and a share of that would go down nicely. Did I say BT are paying, I meant anyone with a landline, BT customer or no are paying, many of whom are retired on fixed incomes, at around £20 per month before a call is made. Question when did UEFA members get a vote on that?

  21. !!Bada Bing!! on

The UEFA Champions League is set to be even stronger from 2018/19, with a minimum of four participating teams now guaranteed from each of England, Spain, Germany and Italy, resulting in more games between the top European teams. Fans will also be able to enjoy UEFA Champions League ‘double header’ nights, as live matches will kick off at both 6pm and 8pm during the Group Stage.

    Celtic Mac,

Is that not pretty much what happens at present? I think 3 out of the 4 teams from the big leagues that had to play qualifiers all made it through with relative ease.

Who knows he might come off the bench as said wonder kid tweaks a hammy in the first minute of ECL semi final second leg at the Camp Nou ,after a hard fought 2-1 win at Celtic park, to deny an ageing Lionel Messi .

Derk had a relatively successful career in Holland prior to signing for Celtic. He even scored against Real Madrid.

He only ever played 872 minutes for Celtic which is frankly a tiny sample to choose from. Especially since the bulk will have been sub appearances.

Clearly there is something up with the guy. He’s currently without a club. I don’t know if it was physical or mental but there was clearly a player in there.
