Brendan takes an early psychological lead

332

I listened to Brendan give due credit to St Mirren at the weekend, and then to the granular analysis of his comment that they were the best Scottish opposition we have faced this season, and recalled an old story.

Archie Macpherson, a good friend of Jock Stein, told me that Jock would make sure he controlled the headlines in the week ahead of playing Rangers. He set the agenda by giving the media ready-made material.

Brendan’s assertion was not fanciful. Whatever has gone on in St Mirren’s season, their recent wins over Hibs and Ayr United, and their performance on at the weekend, they have clearly turned a corner. They were unequivocally better prepared for Celtic Park than most of the Premiership teams who have visited this season. If it was a stretch to say they were the best, at 56 minutes into the game it didn’t feel like one.

Kilmarnock (conceded 6), Motherwell (5), Newco (5), Aberdeen (4) and Hearts (4) were each clueless at Celtic Park this season, so there is a degree of accuracy in manager’s observation.

The Rangers Stein faced is a different proposition entirely from that which Brendan Rodger’s will be up against on Sunday (literally), but Brendan has taken an early psychological lead, whether he needs it or not.

I would be willing to offer a few hours of labour a week to help restore the Saint Mary’s parish. A few of us would I am sure.

  2. Tonight’s memorable win against old Rangers is the 1969 4-0 win in the Scottish Cup final.

Confidence was running high in the Hun camp after a decisive win in the semi.

Celtic, on paper, were weakened by the absence of Yogi and Jinky.

Surprise surprise, in stepped the imperious Connelly.

Davie White, their manager, on TV had declared on the morning of the game that they had something special up their sleeves.

“A hairy oxter” my mother in law quipped to much hilarity.

Their surprise was resorting to brutal tactics from the beginning, but men like Tommy, Billy, Bobby and John would not yield to intimidation.

I can be spotted celebrating our 3rd goal after Heorge dispossessed Greig and rounded the keeper.

The 4 th goal from Stevie resulted in fans at the Mt Florida end looking for any exit they could find.

Enjoy as much as I did on the day.

I’m delighted, and somewhat surprised, that anyone reads my late night rambles.

I’m not saying we are an exclusively Catholic club, but that we are a club shaped by our Catholic Faith. May I should say the Catholic Faith.

Growing up in my earliest days in a predominantly orange village it was a source of pride that we had players like Peacock and Evans in our teams.

Moving to the wee green oasis where we were a majority, we learned from our parents as a family to respect our non Catholic neighbours.

Like our club where every faith is accepted on the terraces, field or directors’ box.

Howevva, doffs to Kojo, we cannot deny our roots steeped in Ireland and Catholicism.

    Mate.

For me , you crystallise the issue .

My concern on that subject has always been the feeling of alienation that some of our fans and players who are not Catholics may well feel.

    The Pope`s eleven ?

    Never the case .

Previously understandable , but now outdated and harmful to the ethos of our Celtic .

And likely to ” turn off ” potential new supporters.

Mind you , I feel the same about some of our other ” associations ” .

You missed the first goal then and had to watch us being pounded for the rest of the half.

John Fallon, of fame on this blog, had a busy time and was probably our MOTM.

Then of course the Buzz Bomb left them triling in his wake to score the 2nd.

    Celtic manager Brendan
Rodgers regularly reminds his players about the need for continuous improvement. The Northern Irishman is as restless as an app and his charges appear to be equally enthusiastic about refining and enhancing their qualities, individually and collectively. They have already set a new club record by being undefeated for 34 games since the start of the current campaign and now they are aiming to become the first Celtic team to beat city rivals Rangers six times in the same season. A 5-1 thrashing at Parkhead in September was followed by a 1-0 Betfred Cup semi-final victory at Hampden the following month and then coming from behind to win 2-1 at Ibrox in December. The clubs meet again at Celtic Park on Sunday, there will be a final fixture after the split and they have also been drawn against each other in the semi-finals of the William Hill
Scottish Cup on 23 April. Celtic full-back Kieran Tierney knows more than most how much the Celtic faithful would savour a green-and-whitewash if they could prevail in the three remaining meetings which, tellingly, he refers to as Glasgow derbies rather than Old Firm games. “We know what that would mean to the supporters and everything we do this season is for them,” said the 19-year-old. “They have backed us all the way and we just try to give back to them as much as we can. In every Glasgow derby, the fans are always brilliant and the atmosphere is always terrific. The build-up is different to every other game; no-one can hide that. But you just need to treat it the same as every other game. You don’t try any harder; you just do what you always do. I don’t know if nervous would be the word for how I feel beforehand; I’m probably excited more than anything. “I think everybody has a little bit of pre-match nerves but that’s a good thing. You want those nerves in games like this. As a Celtic supporter myself, I’ve probably got the same nerves that the fans feel.” Those Glasgow derbies have been a part of Tierney’s life for longer than he can recall.
Literally.
