Brendan with a point to prove

196

Chris Sutton was a deadly serious football player but he never takes himself too seriously as a punter.  This is easy for you and I to understand, when we hear him throw a controversial view around, but if you are Brendan Rodgers and you hear a former fans favourite suggest he was “going through the motions” as Celtic manager, it’s going to sting.

The manager looks to have used this as fuel as he told the assembled media, “From a personal perspective, I am surprised in a way where I heard somebody saying ‘Brendan Rodgers was going through the motions’ earlier in the season.”  Adding, he “had been treated like a novice” since arriving back at Celtic last summer.

You need your manager to keep his emotions under wraps while there is still a job to be done, but I am pleased to see Brendan show some emotion on this subject.  I have never liked the badge kisser, they are all here for professional reasons and Brendan is no different.

He has proven a point in recent week and can do so again on 25 May.  Beating regular losers is only part of the story, though.  If he really wants to teach his critics a lesson, the opportunity will arrive in the third week of September.

My friend’s son bet £10 on Dundee to beat Rangers @ 16/1 and was paid out when Dundee went 2-0 up.

  2. I ENJOYED the best possible introduction to football with St Mary’s Boys’ Guild under a man called John Rice. He was an incredible character, the Godfather of Calton, where I lived back then.

He was a great influence on me in my early years. It was a tough place to grow up, but he managed to set me in the right direction and I was forever grateful to him for that.

Scouts for major football clubs never watched boys’ guild football, so I left and joined Eastercraigs when I was 14 in 1971.

I spent six months there, and then I was invited onto the Celtic ground staff when I left school. Willie Fernie, the former Celtic player, who, like me, went on to manage Kilmarnock, coached the boys’ team. He was a great man and helped me an enormous amount. One of the first things he told me was to get a haircut.

The next day I came in as bald as a coot. Willie took me to another level in my football education, and that first year was possibly the most important in my career.

Being a Celtic fan undoubtedly played a huge part in keeping me on the straight and narrow, though.

My big fear was that they would get rid of me if I didn’t make the grade. There was no way I wanted that hanging over me for the rest of my life.

Jock was an icon at that time after having led the club to such great successes.

Jock quickly told me what I had to work on for the next five years if I wanted to become a first-team regular, and not to deviate from it. I did everything that he told me.

As a manager he could be ruthless. He could speak to you for two minutes in training and leave you feeling like a wet coat. Then he would speak to you next day and you would come away feeling like Pele. He had a tremendous gift for man management.

  3. Scales is a big honest trier. Not particularly good in the air,too slow to pass out of defence, and not great positionally. Is this really what we want to go forward with?.Saying ,if BR thinks he is OK,that will do me.CHs are BRs Achilles Heel.I keep saying,Lagerbielke gets voted best CH in Sweden last year. His STATs said he had almost double, headed clearances than anyone else, most blocks, most tackles, these, not even his strong point. His passing out from the back was.All this got him capped for Sweden.

Brendan is seeing something amiss that no one else is seeing.Anyone think Nawrocki is poor?.BR does not fancy him,for whatever reason. So many calling the guys ” Duds”.

Good evening all from the Tower Bar, Elphin. A fine night in this wee town.

TB- re CBs,it could be down to what Brendan said today, that some guys who weren’t playing showed a great attitude to training and were ready when asked? Who knows….

A bit of a head scratcher I must admit . The stats you quote would impress any scout . There must be more to it than Brendan being pig headed . There will be a story in there .

Big Johan should know what it takes to be a Celtic CB . The fact he says ‘at this stage’ suggests that Lagerbielke could get there .

  11. If the hun has an equivalent of SS on a website they will be extremely busy tracing dpwn all the owners of empty seats.

If the hun has an equivalent of Burnley he will be absolutely furious at all who left early when they were two down.

Anyway, enough of the huns. Our destiny is entirely in our own hands.

    In Brendan we trust.

    Morning Bhoys,

Nice to see Deniabhoy posting yesterday. Hope he’s well.

Any news on Melbourne Mick? Again hope he’s ok.

    —-

Feeling confident about getting a win tonight and bringing the league home.

    Enjoy your day. 👍

  14. So it’s clearer. We need a point from the final 2 games or if we were to lose each by a single goal then provided rangers do not win by 3 or more at Hertz then we win the league.

    Surely we can do this.

After seeing MON blow chances twice in run ins and WGS and Lenny once each I will be hoping we can get this over the line asap and pile the agony back on that lot this weekend in the lead up to the cup final.

Another team / fans / club united performance tonight in Ayrshire should see us through.

  15. Anyone any idea why 7.30 ko ?

It’s not the worst place to get to but there seems no logic in making it 7.30 and not 8pm ko ?

Good memories of seeing us win the league there twice (Naka esp) so let’s hope it’s a third tonight.

  16. BURNLEY@ 7.31

I take it your first paragraph was tongue-in-cheek? “….. provided Rangers do not win by three or more at Hertz ….”

IF (and I pray to all deities that it is not the case) the Hun actually needed to win by three or more goals to win the league then we would be fecked, plain and simple.

Naibalance/Naiclass/NailuvforCeltic would ensure that that would be the case. On the other hand, assuming we win tonight and are outright Champions on Saturday I forecast that Hearts will get their first result of the season against ra Ranjurs, because because because it widnae matter and the NaiAnything could say that his team could beat Ranjurs (but not when it actually matters).

  17. Majestic Hartson – thanks. For a variety of reasons I had to take a break from here. Family life and work were overwhelming me and my mum got diagnosed with vascular dementia back in November. I imagine most CQN posters have experience of a loved one develoing dementia – it is heartbreaking watching its progression.

At the time there was a fair level of intolerance on here by certain posters (or perhaps banter depending on what frame of mind you are in). So I took a step back from posting but still pop in when time allows to see what everyone is saying.

Here’s hoping we are all celebrating tonight. Would love to see JF being the player who gets the winning goal.

Bobby was before my time but he was my father’s favourite player.

Best player in the best ever Scottish team.
