Bribery and Scottish football

840

The Rangers chief executive, Charles Green, yesterday made an extraordinary bid to bribe his way up the Scottish Football League (SFL), saying, “I would … be prepared to guarantee other clubs the ticket revenue equivalent of 300 Rangers fans turning up for matches.”

The SFL will soon vote on reconstruction and amalgamation with the SPL with a 12-12-18 structure on the table.  If this is rejected, no reconstruction will happen.  Should they win successive promotions Green’s club are due to spend three years in lower league football but if successful his bribe could shorten this to two seasons.

In support of his claim Green cites Stranraer, who won Division Two in 1993 and were promoted to Division One the following season.  The league structure changed that summer, from three to four leagues, resulting in more teams being relegated from Division One than was scheduled at the start of the season, but clubs were only promoted to the league they would have entered without reconstruction.

The Rangers are due to be promoted to the Second Division next season but are asking for direct access to the First Division.  They have made no suggestion as to what should happen to the club who finish in second place in this season’s Third Division.  Although Green’s statement references the Stranraer scenario, and an insistence that “the principle of promotion and relegation… should be enshrined”, he does not explain that Stranraer won the league and were promoted from Division Two to One, or that he wants promotion from Third to First.

It will surprise no one that Green believes “the SFL has shown real leadership in proposing” colts teams from the The Rangers and Celtic, although he has surprised me with the news that his club did not lobby for this suggestion.

I am sure the SFL lawyers would have reverted to the Fifa rule book, which is pretty clear that clubs can only be promoted on sporting merit, and explicitly prohibits clubs from paying for promotion.  Which is a pity, as I am sure the financial security of Green’s embryonic club would be greatly enhanced by promotion straight to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

We have been here before.

Scottish Football League clubs will decide their only structure but now more than ever we have to stand together as a club.  The direction and leadership of Celtic, and the supporters’ organisations, tested by often irreconcilable challenges at every turn, are exceptional.  Fantasies that the World Order is controlled between Celtic Park, Glasgow City Council and the Vatican are just that. Running Celtic is like steering the Titanic away from the iceberg with a pizza box, although if you speak to any numpty who has never done it you’ll get a different view. Despite all this, for the first time in decades we have a successful and sustainable football model.

We recruit and develop exceptional players who achieved what few of us expected this season.  The challenge for Celtic is to win the league and Cup and apply all energies on recruiting players for next season’s Champions League campaign.

Enjoy your football; Stand up for Celtic.

You should post more often. That is the kind of post and attitude that will grab attention if more articulate it.

It goes back to my old hobby horse about communication, even if what is said is unpalatable to some, at least we would know what we are buying into, but I do think it is now time to take stock.

starry plough, you’ve hit the nail on the head. This is desperation in action, they have nothing to lose. Attempts to split the club and support must be repelled.

In their prospectus £5.5M was earmarked for stadium upkeep and £4.5M for land purchase.

I think the land purchase may have gone ahead but unless they find other ways to cut costs and increase SB prices the £5M is not going to go on the stadium, unless as you suggest they HAVE to spend.

  7. What i found out in the last 30 mins.

Ledley off to Cardiff and Vic off to Liverpool.

I have a business model based on published figures from Interims and Prospectus. I have ran it by a couple of folk who both commented I was being over generous.

They are screwed during next season and that is with £19.5M share income (£22.5 less costs).

The question for the SFA is will they grant a club licence for next season and on what basis? The projections presumably used to grant one in the first place or fresh projections based on latest figures?

If I were a Rangers supporters I would be asking the SFA on what basis a licence is being granted next season. Ask the SFA if they have no going concern issues with The Rangers business model.

Scottish football is being lied to in a desperate attempt to keep a failed model alive and none more so than The Rangers supporters.

Anyone interested have a look at the National Club Licensing financial criteria from last year

Here are the financial criteria from 2012

    http://www.scottishfa.co.uk/resources/documents/ClubLicensing/PartTwo-NationalClubLicensing/8%20%20Legal%20Admin%20&%20Finance%20Criteria%20(2).pdf

    http://www.scottishfa.co.uk/resources/documents/ClubLicensing/Part2:National/Part2Sect8_Legal,Admin,FinanceandCodesofPractice%20Criteria.pdf

    Check and compare 8.12

Spot the differences. One good change is that some of what clubs supply the SFA will be made public.

  9. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon..!!.. Ibrox belongs to the creditors on

The LL / SSB etc seem to be of the opinion that Celtic will not spend anywhere near £10m this ‘window’ on players, yet they haven’t mentioned greengo’s promise of £10m to sally in January ?. …….. Poor deluded fools……not to worry, their ‘protection’ strategy for all things sevco is going to put sevco ‘to the wall’ also……..!!!!!!!!

  10. Great article Paul. Yes, they are so desperate and downright shameless, CG would repeatedly kick Grannies of the bus, if he could continue to cheat his way back to the top.

Bribery, theft; they know no civilised boundaries.

Greengo is ‘bricking it’ ….. They won’t financially survive another season in the bottom league, and he knows it …….and they CANNOT move up a league…all good stuff

  12. Well said Murdochauldandhay. Young Daniel should be very proud of himself as should his dad. He was an inspiration to all us cyclists over the weekend and managing to complete the whole event at 11 was fantastic. Moonbeams was one very chuffed dad all weekend and quite rightly so.

‘They won’t financially survive another season in the bottom league’

They’ll certainly lose momentum and stagnate, which might be better than then going bust altogether.

  14. Auldheid

Im a slow reader, looks like sevco have to have their books up to the mark

by 30th april, reconstruction in their favour allows them to have an

improved business model. If not, with them losing money hand over fist,

a 6m wage bill in lowest tier of football, cant see how they can survive.

The sfa in ,my opinion couldnt grant licensce because they could be in

a position that they could not fulfil their fixtures.

The end game is here, the end of sevco or the end of scottish football.

  17. Auldheid @14:20 very helpfully points out “Ntassoolla,

In their prospectus £5.5M was earmarked for stadium upkeep and £4.5M for land purchase.”

    Heady figures.

“Earmarked” being the operative word? Would you agree?

In the here and now the bribe offered is 300 fans, 18 games @£25 a ticket. A whopping £135,000. A far cry from the telephone numbers in the proposals.

A poor man’s bribe IMO. And no wonder. It might have to be paid. Up front.

One aspect of this proposal that might appeal to towns small and large all over Scotland and Europe is the idea of paying for Rangers fans to be absent. It’s bound to be far cheaper than any actual visit.

  19. PAUL you and a lot on here are obsessed with sevco, why is that ,my club celtic has a lot of issuses that need to be addressed.quality of players we have on our books,a set of directors who dont have much vision or future were the club is going.2 billionaries on board, yet we go for freebies and bosmans.so start putting the boot into them for a change.and leave the huns alone.there is plenty that needs to be sorted out at celtic ,and its not about football either. Doyle at wolves no thanks, and stokes , hooper mc court , foster, miku should be punted, in the summer. and i still think there should be a change in management this summer. i dont dislike lenny, but i think this job at celtic is not for him. ok we beat barca which was great ,but thats it,
