Bridging the gap with Portuguese transfer fees

352

By all accounts, Virgil van Dijk has had an excellent season for Southampton and now has a trio of the Premier League’s wealthiest clubs on his tail. We knew he was a player when he left as a 23-year-old two years ago, but you don’t really know how a player will measure up in a new environment until he gets there.

Scottish club have suffered from this previously, as players with decent EPL experience under their belts have not cut it herem even Bundesliga players, in the case of Teemu Pukki. Virgil’s success, and that of Victor Wanyama and ‘England’s number one’, reflects on everyone in the current Celtic squad.

You and I watched Celtic bridge the gap between selling our players in the £4m – £6m bracket, to selling between £10m and £12m. But we have hitherto been unable to fetch the kind of money the Portuguese regularly get for their top players (well into the £30m category).

If Virgil van Dijk leaves Southampton for north of £50m, not only will Celtic earn 10% of the fee, at a stroke it will increase the value of our playing squad, whenever the next EPL club comes asking.

Within just over a year of leaving Celtic, I have it on excellent authority that Virgil increased his wages by a factor of 10. His next move, by necessity, will see him earn over £100k per week. Celtic will not compete with those wages; players will not reject them to continue to enjoy our special club.  We live in an era where Celtic players can one day aspire to earn £20m over a four year contract (elsewhere).

The migration south will continue, but if it is appropriately compensated, the opportunity for growth at Celtic will not diminish. It could even improve.  Good luck to you, Virgil.

Brendan was so upset with the ‘expectation management’ he went and signed a 4 year contract.

If we do get a 5 mil windfall due to the sale of VVD it should be used towards buying PR. After all its money we didnt expect. Put another 5 mil on top and i think they would accept.

With you all the way there Barney. We just have to wait and see what Pep plans.

  3. Most important targets for the summer are Stuart Armstrong and Patrick Roberts. The budget should prioritise those who have proven themselves already.

After that you can look elsewhere.

We have a big squad still. I expect to see the back of Allan, Ciftci, Janko & GMS.

Commons, Ambrose, O’Connell & Toure are all leaving at the end of their contract.

We’re left with a squad of 20 seasoned professionals: Gordon, Bailly, De Vries, Gamboa, Lustig, Sviatchenko, Boyata, Simunovic, Tierney, Izzy, Sinclair, Forrest, McGregor, Rogic, Brown, Biton, Armstrong, Eboue, Griffiths & Dembele

Add to that the youth players available: Hazard, Ralston, Miller, Johnson, Aitchison, Christie & Ajer

How many more players do we need? 2 or 3 tops. If you are expecting 5 signings then you have to be prepared to get rid of the youths.

  4. We have a problem with Paddy.Yes,we all want him back, but how does that work with BR trying to bring in someone,a bit special, for the Qualifiers. We have to wait until Pep,assesses if he is ready for the EPL.How long will that take?.Is there anyone out there “A bit special”that we can afford in the meantime.

As I said earlier, unless we can find someone better say, than Rogic,Armstrong, then what is the point.Same up front. We have to find a better striker than Griff.Never mind the crap about Griff not being CL class. He got us the goal in somwhere near Timbuktoo, scored two or three, can only remember 2,against Beer Sheva, that got us through.I am sure our scouting dept.are working their socks off to find someone.let them get on with the job,but they must be better than what we have for the qualifiers,or why waste money because of galoots like Neganon.

  5. With regards Paddy Roberts, I don’t see any problem being able to pay for him, BUT, can we pay wages to keep him happy, – – that’s another story.

Just hope we can find a way though.

The prosecution are not interested what happened post the take-over. It wasn’t part of the purported crime.

Whyte did nothing that Murray hadn’t done before him. Muppet mud wrestling.

Findlay has his chance tomorrow. I noticed that the prosecution in their summing up digressed to show documents to the jury… to nail down the fraud, the real fraud is the fraud that went on between the BOS and RFC PLC prior to Craig Whytes take-over which was ignored by the SMSM, aided and abetted by the SFA and ignored by the Scottish Parliament at the expense of the Scottish populace.

The real FRAUD is Scotland’s refusal to arrest the fraudsters and instead try to fry a pastie.

    ===========

I understand that but in order to demonstrate CWs character to the jury they might have gone more in that direction of his post takeover behaviour.

Not knowing their approach it was best to play safe and not make that public until after the trial.

The fraud was against Scottish football and its support, but as there is no mechanism as yet to make SFA accountable directly to supporters then the only route left is via the clubs and their shareholders.

As a club Celtic are accountable to shareholders no matter the size of shareholding. They now have an opportunity to set the wrongs since 1999 right given that what Res12 sought is now shown to be necessary.

I appreciate your commitment and your emotion, I wouldn’t dare call it a passion because we’d all rather there was no need for the fight. I laud and applaud you and all that you have done in tandem with the other Res 12 guys. That said, I think we’ll both be dead before Celtic break wind over the fraud.

I think Celtic PLC are squeamish of UEFA’s scorn should they dare take the SFA to task through the courts. And besides, it was/is not exclusively a Celtic share holders problem but I know you know that.

It is ‘class action’ or ‘no action’ in my sad honest opinion.

    Regarding Roberts coming back.

We have to factor in how the boy sees his career development, even though Pep is prepared to let him go.

If we do some business in other areas where Brendan feels needs upgrading, then we should have enough to qualify.

If we do and the stars align, then the group stage will be soon enough for Roberts.

Nun and policeman face off in Limerick ‘keepy uppy’ contest

An Irish policeman has been filmed testing his ‘keepy uppy’ skills against a Dominican Sister in Limerick.

The result of the contest between Garda O’Connell and the nun is “not quite clear” according to An Garda Síochána (Irish police). They say “a rematch will have to be scheduled”.

There are four Dominican Sisters in the southern Irish city, they arrived from Nashville, Tennessee, in August 2016.

It is believe the discipline of ‘keepy uppy’ originated in Scotland after the World War Two.

    Call it stubbornness. :)

At first it was “something stinks here” that began as soon as Sherriff Officers called at Ibrox on 10th August.

Res12 was an opportunity to check the drains that neither RFC/SFA/HMRC/UEFA wanted to happen. The starting premise was that UEFA would want to know if their rules were being broken and how in order to fix.

Its funny their reluctance to do so.

The sad outcome is the discovery that the rules mean SFA when the commercial rubber hits the integrity road.

    Fair play my a**e.

However shareholders still need to know if Celtic’s position from 2013, that Res12 was unnecessary , still stands.

I think all shareholders who signed up to Res12 have a right as shareholders to be told of Celtic’s position by or before the next AGM and what took place in 2011 will be a lot clearer by then once the CW trial is out of the way. (although I have no problem delaying until the Supreme Court ruling on BTC ebts happens).

In some ways whether that is they are voting down Res12, or support a modification of it like the suggestion made by the Tax Justice Network, matters less than that Celtic finally state their position.

    That is accountability.
