Bridging the gap with Portuguese transfer fees

352

By all accounts, Virgil van Dijk has had an excellent season for Southampton and now has a trio of the Premier League’s wealthiest clubs on his tail. We knew he was a player when he left as a 23-year-old two years ago, but you don’t really know how a player will measure up in a new environment until he gets there.

Scottish club have suffered from this previously, as players with decent EPL experience under their belts have not cut it herem even Bundesliga players, in the case of Teemu Pukki. Virgil’s success, and that of Victor Wanyama and ‘England’s number one’, reflects on everyone in the current Celtic squad.

You and I watched Celtic bridge the gap between selling our players in the £4m – £6m bracket, to selling between £10m and £12m. But we have hitherto been unable to fetch the kind of money the Portuguese regularly get for their top players (well into the £30m category).

If Virgil van Dijk leaves Southampton for north of £50m, not only will Celtic earn 10% of the fee, at a stroke it will increase the value of our playing squad, whenever the next EPL club comes asking.

Within just over a year of leaving Celtic, I have it on excellent authority that Virgil increased his wages by a factor of 10. His next move, by necessity, will see him earn over £100k per week. Celtic will not compete with those wages; players will not reject them to continue to enjoy our special club.  We live in an era where Celtic players can one day aspire to earn £20m over a four year contract (elsewhere).

The migration south will continue, but if it is appropriately compensated, the opportunity for growth at Celtic will not diminish. It could even improve.  Good luck to you, Virgil.

Stuart A is well worth £30k per week, i would argue he is now our best player, certainly top 3. Tremendous.

  4. Unless Catman is on Huddleboard, I would say it is very unlikely they have access to insider dealings at Celtic. Educated guessing is more likely.

Yep reality bites! A dilemma indeed. Do we break the salary ceiling and risk a poor return or maintain it and gamble on cropping undiscovered jewels. Ideally a mixture but that is very difficult

From Bert’s site our club ranking is:

    48 Celtic Sco (11/12) 16.8600 (12/13) 6.6500 (14/15) 7.8000 (15/16) 3.6000 (16/17)7.8750 (Total)42.785

Our coefficient takes a big drop off for the following season so a good performance this year is important. I don’t know if we have ever been better placed to qualify in terms of the quality of the team, combined with the less daunting path of the Champions route, ie no Arsenal types again.

For me just getting in the Group stages is the major success, when you look at the potential groups getting to the knockout stages requires a miracle, if we can manage to challenge for 3rd and get a Europa run post Xmas then not only would be fantastic for the team but it would mightily aid our European hopes for next 5 years.

It’s not a link; I’ve put it in a spreadsheet using a few sources. It’s difficult to follow, so I will try and summarise. We are 25th in the list but not all the teams above us can qualify; at least one would drop out, putting us into Pot 3.

    Top 8 Qualifiers – Pot 1

    Real Madrid

    Bayern München

    FC Barcelona

    Atlético Madrid

    Juventus

    Paris Saint-Germain

    Borussia Dortmund

Sevilla (if they qualify) or Benfica

    Pot 2

    Benfica (if Sevilla qualify)

    Chelsea

    Manchester City

    FC Porto

    Manchester United

    Shakhtar Donetsk

    FC Basel

Benfica may drop into Pot 2 and Napoli may be in Pot 2 if they qualify; Tottenham will go into Pot 2 if either Napoli or Sevilla don’t qualify. Monaco will go into Pot 2 if both Sevilla and Napoli don’t qualify.

    Pot 3

Tottenham (could go into Pot 2)

Monaco (could go into Pot 2)

    Anderlecht

    Besiktas

Other possibilities in Pot 3 (depending on qualification) are Celtic, Dinamo Kiev, Ajax, Liverpool, FC Salzburg, Viktoria Plzen, CSKA Moscow, Club Brugge, Olympiacos and Sporting Lisbon.

    Confused yet?

I will keep it updated during the qualifiers and let you know who is in what Pot.

Pretty sure Monaco as French champions go straight into pot 1 along with the champions of the other top 8 ranked leagues. My interpretation of it also looks like we need 3 teams seeded above us to fail to qualify to be able to move into pot 3, which is generally unlikely.

Strangely, football is the great unmentionable when I go back to Kilwinning.

    Magic,innit?!!!!

  13. Slightly off but it does work out that way

“The title-holder and the champions of the 7 top-ranked associations are placed in pot 1. If the title-holder is also the champion from one of the 7 top-ranked associations, the champion of the association ranked 8 is also put in pot 1. The other pots are filled according to the club ranking.”

As Real and Juve have both won their leagues the champions of the top 8 ranked countries are locked into pot 1, which is why teams like Spartak Moscow(18.606) and Shakhtar Donetsk(87.526) will be seeded above the likes of Barca(151.942) and Dortmund(124.899). Tottenham can only move up to pot 2 if Sevilla and Napoli both fail to qualify.

Of course yeah forgot about that, a timely boost when it happens!

  15. Regarding the European rankings, it’s impossible to deduce from this whether UEFA are regarding Triggers Broom FC as a new club or not.

A club’s co-efficient is based on the points they accumulate in the previous 5 years. There’s an added safety net though which is that the minimum points that any club gain in a particular year cannot be lower than the National team’s points for that same year.

TBFC have never played in Europe. Rangers last played in Europe in 2011/12, a year that drops out of the equation for next season, 2017-18.

Both the old and new club have never played in Europe in the last 5 years and therefore that’s why the current Govanites are given Scotland’s co-efficient points in each of the last 5 years, a total of 3.785.

They therefore start their European campaign in the 1st qualifying round of the Europa League, ties played on June 29th and July 6th. There are 100 teams in that first qualifying round and TBFC have the 45th highest ranking, so just sneak into being one of the 50 seeded teams. Should they qualify they are almost certainly unseeded from then on.

Spot on. Scotland’s coefficient sneaks them into a 1st round seeding by about 0.3 points, but unseeded thereafter. I would be staggered if they made the 4th qualifying round never mind the group stages that the glib and shameless liar is banking on. St Johnstone are seeded for the 1st 2 rounds, Aberdeen enter at the 2nd round and are also seeded for that round only.

  27. Lisbon long post warning

Good evening CQN, almost back to normal after picking up a wee chest infection in Lisbon. I thought I would bore you all with my musings and “faint”recollection of the trip.

Arrived at Edinburgh airport at the start of the trip and the first person I met was the fine BRTH who had organised the whole shebang. Then who do I meet but an old mate I hadn’t seen for several years Calleyroadbhoy57, neither of us had aged that much ;-).

On the flight I had the good fortune to sit next to Friesdorfer and then Lionsroar67 appeared, hopefully he is home today.

To cut a long story short I spent the entire trip with the fine OldTim67 and his minder BT and I think it is fair to say we had a hoot. We started off at the cheap as chips O Trevo for a few libations and eventually headed down to Hennessey’s. This is when my “jet lag” kicked in and apparently ate the meals of Kikinthenakas, EmbraMike and An Tearnan. I find this accusation difficult to believe as I wasn’t hungry. Shortly after this I lost my iPhone and the day ended.

Next day, still phoneless, we headed down to Fatima, myself, OT and BT after we eventually found the bus station. At the bus station we met the irrepressible Malorbhoy and our journey to Fatima began. At Fatima we met Connaire 12, CCB and his bhoy BMCUW along with the fine Teuchter Ar La. On our return to the bus station we decided to have a wee beer where the barman would have given the Rev I M Jolly a close run for his money. Whilst we were there we met Catman. Later that night a fine night was had by all and we spent time with Richie, whom I hope to meet tomorrow in BB’s. I had the good fortune to be at the table with MurdochAuldandHay, OneMalloy and his lovely daughter to name but a few. I also had the good fortune to meet up with Mouldybhoy again, what a guy. Apparently DD couldn’t make it because his ring had collapsed. Later we sat outside with Sipsini and his good lady and the Timreaper.

The following day was THE day. Kölncelt appeared and took over BT’s duties whilst we went to the Mass, a very emotional occasion! I doubt I’ll ever be at another Mass where the Celtic Song and YNWA will be played, apart from perhaps my funeral.

The day just got better after that with a trip to the stadium and 2 visits to Cafe Villa Cruz for pre and post Stadium libations and a mad Tuk Tuk trip with me, BT, OT, Kölncelt and Richie when we thought the Tuk Tuk was going to topple at the roundabout. During the visit to the Stadium we ran into many fine CQN’rs including ACGR, Skyisalandfill and Teuchter Ar La, who was offering his stones to be touched and many others to numerous to mention. On our 2nd trip to the Cafe Villa Cruz we were joined by DD who had invested in a new ring and became OT67’s Special Needs Consultant. Here I also had my photo taken with Awe_naw’s brothers and posted it on his FB page just to piss him off ;-)

Later that evening, well the Party in Pink Street was something to behold and a few libations were taken. All the usual suspects were there – CRC, Cowiebhoy and his good lady, Morrisey23 and Mags McGill but unfortunately no Awe_naw.

Friday was a day of rest, aye right.

Saturday saw the treble being won at Doca 6 in the company of the usual suspects along with Friesdorfer and his good lady and WITS and his better half. We then headed to the Irish&Co bar where Henrikschip and his missus were but all decided to head due to the number of London huns in that pub. We ended up in CR7 with DJ Kik and the CQN Crew finally rounding the night off in Mad Carlos’s bar. If I have missed anybody out please forgive me as some things are still a tad hazy.

I believe Montevideo is next on the cards – over to you BRTH :-)
