Bridging the gap with Portuguese transfer fees

352

By all accounts, Virgil van Dijk has had an excellent season for Southampton and now has a trio of the Premier League’s wealthiest clubs on his tail. We knew he was a player when he left as a 23-year-old two years ago, but you don’t really know how a player will measure up in a new environment until he gets there.

Scottish club have suffered from this previously, as players with decent EPL experience under their belts have not cut it herem even Bundesliga players, in the case of Teemu Pukki. Virgil’s success, and that of Victor Wanyama and ‘England’s number one’, reflects on everyone in the current Celtic squad.

You and I watched Celtic bridge the gap between selling our players in the £4m – £6m bracket, to selling between £10m and £12m. But we have hitherto been unable to fetch the kind of money the Portuguese regularly get for their top players (well into the £30m category).

If Virgil van Dijk leaves Southampton for north of £50m, not only will Celtic earn 10% of the fee, at a stroke it will increase the value of our playing squad, whenever the next EPL club comes asking.

Within just over a year of leaving Celtic, I have it on excellent authority that Virgil increased his wages by a factor of 10. His next move, by necessity, will see him earn over £100k per week. Celtic will not compete with those wages; players will not reject them to continue to enjoy our special club.  We live in an era where Celtic players can one day aspire to earn £20m over a four year contract (elsewhere).

The migration south will continue, but if it is appropriately compensated, the opportunity for growth at Celtic will not diminish. It could even improve.  Good luck to you, Virgil.

  1. DD, it was a pleasure I’m glad to hear you are better. OldTim certainly took a new lease of life when you appeared, lol ;-)

One interesting piece of trivia is that the new Celtic home strip is cheaper in Lisbon than CP as Kölncelt will testify.

From my quick scan through the news on signings, it looks like the bold Pedro is going to be building a complete side.

Not the best way to negotiate a couple of very early Europa qualifiers.

Brendan started with a core squad and moulded them into an irrestible and invincible force.

We had a foundation, a confident, courageous captain, experienced defenders, an international goalkeeper, a 40 goal striker and an on loan classy winger.

The addition of Sinclair and Dembele helped ease the load on LG’s goal scoring shoulders.

    The rest is historic.

    Pedro has?

An over the hill striker as captain and a squad of dross?

In the games we faced them, I didn’t see a player who would get a seat on our bench.

Another year of mediocrity for the Govan Sufferers beckons.

3-0 to Mexico and one thing that stands out is we dodged a bullet with that defender Duffy who was linked with us last season.

John Kennedy: Stuart Armstrong will place happiness and success above money to stay with Celtic

    The Herald: Graeme Macpherson

JOHN KENNEDY, the Celtic first-team coach, expects Stuart Armstrong will place “happiness and winning things” above financial gains by committing his long-term future to the club. The forward has been an integral figure in Celtic’s treble-winning season but has now entered the final year of his contract. Talks are securing an extension are now underway and Kennedy believes Armstrong will turn his back on a move to England to stay with Celtic.

“Stuart loves his time here and is thoroughly enjoying being where he is at the moment,” said the former Celtic defender. “From speaking to him he wants to be here. It’s just a case of getting things ironed out contractually.

“Stuart is playing the best football of his life, he’s broken into the international scene, and he’s just won three trophies, so I think he sees being here is a good thing for him. You know you go somewhere else and it might not work out so well. He’s a clever boy and he’s been making all the right noises in terms of where he wants to play his football. So let’s hope we get that sorted sooner rather than later.

“Obviously financially there are big incentives moving to England but the most important thing in football, and outwith that, happiness. All of our players are in a terrific place. They all really enjoy coming into work every day, going in playing in front of 60,000 fans who are the best in the world and you go and win trophies.

“When you’re in your football career the three things you want are happiness, being in a good place and winning things, and our players are enjoying that at the moment. It’s important we keep this group together, we keep moving forward. The morale and happiness within the group has been great all season.”

Kennedy believes Armstrong could also become Celtic captain one day. “Yes, potentially. The manager has given him the opportunity to do that at times this season. He’s that type. When he steps on the training pitch he a bit like Scott Brown – a different type in terms of how he applies himself – but he’s a super professional, very intelligent and the more time he spends here he gets a greater understanding of what this club is about.

“When you become captain of this club it’s important you understand that, the expectation of the fans, the history of the club and the actual feeling you get here. It’s very special. He is now getting to that point. He’s had a few seasons and let’s hope he can have a few more and you never know what will happen in the future with him.

“He’s an important player for us. The manager has spoken to him – everyone has – and he’s made a big impact this season in terms of what he’s done on the pitch. But off the pitch he is a terrific character and the type of personality you want to have at your club.

“We want to make sure contractually we’ve got him tied down and he can concentrate on his football again rather than worrying about what’s going on off the pitch.”

  7. Football is all about happiness and enjoyment, for both supporters and players. Celtic gives you both.

Can money buy happiness. To be honest, don’t know. Maybe Gary Hooper et al would be better qualified to answer.

  13. John Kennedy`s comment on happiness gave cause for me to think of my home spun philosophy wjich has served me through the years. If we take health as a give ( and I know it is not) then these are the three areas for consideration towards a happy life:

    a) Where you live;

    b) What your main occupation is ( Including retirement and unemployment);

    c) Who your friends are.

Celtic, of course, can be considered part of b) and c).

I am now about to indulge in all three by going off to the golf,

Chelsea celebrate winning the Premier League trophy

Chelsea won the title – and received almost £151m from the Premier League

Chelsea were paid £150.8m by the Premier League after winning the 2016-17 title – 50% more than the top earners in 2015-16.

The 2016-17 season was the first of the latest TV deal and saw a total of almost £2.4bn paid to the 20 clubs – up from £1.6bn last season.

Bottom club Sunderland got £93.471m – more than the £93.219m 2015-16 winners Leicester pocketed the previous season.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

How can Celtic compete? Especially when you see how they reward failure – look at Sunderland.

A good while back, I remember TWC mentioning the possibility of posters having a Celtic-related profile picture beside their moniker. I quickly ‘baggsied’ Big Jock, and just wanted to say that if it ever transpires, any of the photos in that article would do, although I could see one poster in particular wanting first option on the one of The Big Man, The Big Cup, and Bobby Murdoch!

When the next TV rights deal comes up for renewal you have delegates from the clubs/league who have an agreed price that they are willing to allow the product to be broadcast for, you do not settle for the utter pittance being given now, I would not sell the rights to the SPL for anything less than £20m per club, if its no deal you go pay per view, and return to 3pm kick offs on a Saturday or whatever suits individual clubs to play matches, Doncaster Regan etc OUT

  22. !!Bada Bing!! on

Dessybhoy- We should have our own TV rights, as well as being part of a deal for the League.

  23. Bada Bing

Is it part of the league rules that TV marketing is done on a league basis rather than individual clubs? the only way Celtic will get a TV deal to match the interest in the club is by being in another league or having its own TV rights, hiring someone like Edddie Hearn who is doing an incredible job stimulating interest in Boxing and Darts and see how that takes off, getting scraps from SKY is not for me, however the league/ clubs need to get off their knees when dealing with SKY, I have seen no evidence that they are competent in negotiating any commercial deals.
