Brilliant Oranje, notorious Franz

2184

Absolutely delighted the Dutch injected some swagger into the World Cup last night.  Diego Costa continued the pattern this week of Brazilian born players profiting from a tumble inside the box, gifting Spain an early lead from the penalty spot, but the Dutch were irresistible.

Exactly how they managed to improve their performance against Spain, four years after losing the World Cup Final with the imperious Edson Braafheid, is a mystery of the modern game.

Netherlands scored all those goals and created even more chances with a meagre 36% possession.  If they were German, we would be reverting to the national stereotype that they were the epitome of ‘efficiency’.

Speaking of the Germans, I’ve always had a lot of time for Franz Beckenbauer, but to find himself banned from football for coming up short in a matter with the words “Fifa” and “ethics” in it, must make him the most notorious German since, erm, well, in quite a long time.  With his former Bayern Munich teammate Uli Honess due to be jailed this month for financial maleficence, it’s better to assume no one in the game is above sticking his snout in the trough.

The soul of football depends on the outcome of this Fifa investigation; no one should be above its reach.  Beckenbauer’s provisional ban should be verified.  Kick him out the game.

Fantastic stuff on the blog yesterday from Bertie Auld; what an honour to have these great guys among us.  I’m heading to the Celtic Shop on Argyle St today where Bertie, Tommy Gemmell and John Hughes will be signing books between 13:00 and 16:00.  If you’re in town I’ll see you there.

The Big Cup’s going to be there, so bring a camera.

I would never demean my beliefs by blessing myself at a football game for effect rather than a prayer. It was and is a sign of peace to use it for any other reason is sinful.

Without taking sides on it,it is illegal in Scotland to bless yourself in an aggressive or threatening manner.

I assume you mean the BBC is biased against Catholicism.

Odd then that the director general of the BBC from 2004 to 2012 was Mark Thomson a high profile Catholic.

And the Chairman of the BBC trust from 2011 to 2014 was Lord Patten who is also a high profile Catholic.

    Read MWD comments,

if you feel you have to bless yourself in an aggressive or threatening manner then you really have to ask yourself questions about your own faith and what it means to you

I would think that if a sevco fan ran upto you and waved a sash in your face then they would fall foul of the same law

FWIW, I fully understand the guys on here who are passionate about this subject, its really important to them, its massively important to everyone in Scotland. Its also right that it should be debated, debates are healthy in any society.

A lot healthier than say, bullets! Look at Ukraine, Syria etc for example. Once it has been decided I hope we can put it to bed and accept the decision, unlikely i know.

The SNP have never had a Catholic cabinet minister.

    :::::;;

You have made the above mentioned statement many times on this blog. Although I have always known this to be wrong I have refrained from saying so because I did not want to sink to such a low level, so I let you live in your ignorance. Some may have called you a liar or an idiot or both. Not me as I admit we can all make mistakes, just ad I did yesterday.

This message is also for Neganon.

The cabinet minister who took the OB through parliament was Roseanna Cunningham: a devout and practising catholic.

    Neganon.

I really wish you would stop going on about ‘ blessing yourself’. No one will be arrested for this act, this could only happen under extreme circumstances: such as aggressive blessing to taunt someone.

I agree the OB act is a pig’s breakfast and it ‘s basically unworkable. Imo it won’t last in it’s present form

and thats always been my grief about them – i know many rangers fans who would describe themselves as protestant and have done some drum banging – yet i dont know any of them that go to church or even have any religious tendencies or behaviors whatsoever

the vast majority of them define their protestantism not in terms of faith in god or following the scriptures of their church – but in terms of being anti-catholic and public displays of it

i dont see how that can make you a protestant if you actually dont have any faith??

so if a ‘catholic’ feels they have to bless them self in an aggressive or threatening manner then they are going down the same path

Theglasgowcenticway way. Catholics are around 16% of the scottish population. We have been subject to racism for all of my life. Recently they outlawed blessing yourself. I fear the underestimate their latent and institutional sectarianism and the overestimate their intelligence in doing the right thing.

The track record is there for all to see.

You are getting more hysterical in each post.Catholics in Scotland do not have to fear anyone. We have Catholics in top jobs in Business and Commerce. At the top in local government.Very well represented in National government.
