Brilliant Oranje, notorious Franz

2184

Absolutely delighted the Dutch injected some swagger into the World Cup last night.  Diego Costa continued the pattern this week of Brazilian born players profiting from a tumble inside the box, gifting Spain an early lead from the penalty spot, but the Dutch were irresistible.

Exactly how they managed to improve their performance against Spain, four years after losing the World Cup Final with the imperious Edson Braafheid, is a mystery of the modern game.

Netherlands scored all those goals and created even more chances with a meagre 36% possession.  If they were German, we would be reverting to the national stereotype that they were the epitome of ‘efficiency’.

Speaking of the Germans, I’ve always had a lot of time for Franz Beckenbauer, but to find himself banned from football for coming up short in a matter with the words “Fifa” and “ethics” in it, must make him the most notorious German since, erm, well, in quite a long time.  With his former Bayern Munich teammate Uli Honess due to be jailed this month for financial maleficence, it’s better to assume no one in the game is above sticking his snout in the trough.

The soul of football depends on the outcome of this Fifa investigation; no one should be above its reach.  Beckenbauer’s provisional ban should be verified.  Kick him out the game.

Fantastic stuff on the blog yesterday from Bertie Auld; what an honour to have these great guys among us.  I’m heading to the Celtic Shop on Argyle St today where Bertie, Tommy Gemmell and John Hughes will be signing books between 13:00 and 16:00.  If you’re in town I’ll see you there.

The Big Cup’s going to be there, so bring a camera.

  1. Watching a bit of the cricket and its got me thinking .

Football matches could maybe be played to a longer format.

5 days is probably too long for one game but an 8 hour football match seems reasonable especially with the money they get.

  2. Lions all present and correct at Celtic store Argyle Street. We have Bertie, Tommy and Yogi all on top form and we have all the names from CQN competition from yesterday inside the European Cup. Will get Bertie to draw a winner shortly.

We also have the SPFL Premiership trophy with us today. If in town pop in.

Forgive me for my stupidity. But that is how the world works. Companies and governments trade internally and across borders world wide. The UK does exactly that at this time. Maybe my understanding of trade has been wrong since birth.

Do you honestly believe that Scotland as a nation Independent of Westminster will be unable to trade with it’s existing business partners after a break from the UK? Will Scottish produce and manufacturing cease to be of value after Independence. Will foreign goods cease to be a requirement thereafter? Are we going to survive on mince, tatties and whiskey and wear kilts for ever more? Is England our only trade partner? Will the English cease to trade with us? How many Scottish and English companies will instantly die under your impression of Independence? I read but only obfuscation in your reply.

If Scotland had voluntarily given away her independence in 1707, or had been assimilated naturally with her English neighbours, then I would agree with Auldheid that we should continue to be a single unit.

Sadly, that was not the case.

Scotland was dragged unwillingly into this forced marriage by greedy & treacherous leaders. The Scottish people rioted in every town in the country against their loss of sovereignty.

    They had been kidnapped.

Now they have the first ‘fair’ opportunity to regain their independence.

I sincerely hope they take it.

  11. I agree with those who feel that an Independence debate is of such importance to those of us who live in Scotland. I would ask that it be conducted with respect for one another’s stance. I would also suggest that the pages of CQN are not the best place for conducting such a debate.

    That’s not true, is it?

By the time the Act was passed the most vociferous opponent, The Kirk, had been bought off by the privileges bestowed on it.

Popular objection wasn’t based on any hight faultin notions of sovereignty. It was to do with fears about the independence of the Kirk and the threat of tax rises.

  25. An tearmann. So anti Catholicism was a Westminster invention? I must have imagined the Church of Scotland calling for the Irish to be sent home. And to others who posted, my brother had to immigrate to Australia because he couldn’t get promoted in the shipyards in glasgow. That was the late 80’s. Also in the late 80’s the Huns signed their first catholic. Oh how they were praised for ending inheir system of apartheid (Seth Africa even beat them to it). The media and scottish society previously told us that ther was no such policy. They actually told us there simply wasn’t a catholic good enough and that we were paranoid.

None of this is ancient history as some of you claim.

Indeed let’s through in the continued allowance of sectarian marches in our country.

And let’s talk more about the OB act because MWD, Turkeybhoy and hoops dos appeasement for this act is quite disgraceful.

When the act was going through the much vaunted scottish parliament two remarkable things were admitted. One was that the act was simply to even up things ( to make what celtic fans do and sing illegal) and that blessing oneself could be illegal if you do it in the wrong way. This was an astonishing admission in so many ways. Remarkable it never got more attention, astonishing that the Catholic Church never went crazy and that it was said in the first place.

Those of you spouting appeasement would do well to remember some other incidents and how they would now be treated under the OB act. What would happen to boruc for example who has a simple ritual to bless himself. God forbid he was back at Ibrox. Would he be arrested? I bet you that thought makes you really uncomfortable now?

You see offence tends to be in the eye of the offended. The fact that so many seem to take offence at an openly catholic gesture in Scotland is of course not a surprise to anyone here. However who decides its a crime. Why it’s the police. And the police have been institutionally sectarian in Scotland since their inception.

And even if you don’t like some neds blessing themselves should they be arrested for it?

And where does all this stop? Irish songs are now illegal too. Who decided that?

It astounds me that intelligent people can’t step back and see things for what they are because of their own blind allegiances.

The OB act is an abomination. The SNP government brought it in and told us what they were doing. Why the hell should I trust them? And why should I trust this so called country given it’s track record.

I understand why some would want independence and I get their passion even if I don’t agree. But to allow yourselves to become so blind and to continually attack those who disagree with you tells me everything I need to know.

The portrayal of a utopian Scotland isn’t just laughable. It’s sinister.

That kind of trading relationship is is what we currently enjoy. What is the benefit of change? We are suddenly able to strike better deals because we are independent.?

What if other countries are not so sure we are as sound as a pound? Would that not make them wary?

There are unforeseen consequences of a changed relationship. Like not being able to drop in on the in laws that you liked and they liked you before the divorce.

I think little attention has been paid to that aspect.
