Bring it on, Celtic

Icelandic champions, you say?  Not much to worry about there, you would hope.  But Stjarnan knocked Lech Poznan out of Europe last season, and Poznan went on to take the Polish league from our old pals Legia Warsaw, who were a pretty decent team last season.

Stjarnan were not nearly as good as Lech Poznan, nor were they as good as Motherwell, who they also put out of Europe a year ago, but get your close-season wrong (the Polish Ekstraklasa doesn’t break until June), and you’re out, no matter if it’s Stjarnan or Maribor on the match ticket.

Let me put it another way, I wouldn’t fancy St Johnstone against Stjarnan right now, and Saints won at Celtic Park as recently as March.  A red card in the wrong place (need I remind you of Efe, big Dan?) and you’re in trouble.

I’ve not seen the new livery on Celtic Park, the photos of which look superb, so I’ll be along early tonight to drink in the summer atmosphere.  There’s also the anticipation of looking forward to seeing a few new faces in competitive action for Celtic for the first time.

The most important performance of tonight will be from Dedryck Boyata.  More than any other area of the team, defence is all about partnerships, so how quickly Dedryck fills the Jason Denayer gap will go a long way to determining whether Celtic qualify for the Champions League group stage this season.

Remember to swap out your old season ticket from your wallet with your NEW ticket!

Bring it on, Celtic.

  10. Looking forward to the game tonight but worried about the centre of defence. Boyata seems a certain starter but it’s Charlie next to him that has me worried.

1-0 would do me but 4-0 would be better.

I think the same shade of purple denotes very high office in OO.

    ——

Seems it does. Initiation into that office appears somewhat unusual:

“At the end of his ‘ride on the goat’ the candidate is rolled up in a bundle and carried in the canvas or sackcloth sheet to the north-west corner of the Chapter room, where he is informed of the consequences of disloyalty to the Royal Arch Purple. Here the Arch Purple candidate subjects himself to one of the most blasphemous and grossly repulsive forms of bondage imaginable”

Bobby Murdoch and Roy Croppie further to your posts in the last thread about Alfie Conn. My dad and i had our doubts about us signing Alfie but lost these when i saw him playing for us.

He was on a similiar wavelength, football wise, to our three other best players in that team, Danny, Kenny and Pat Stanton.

He added to what was a very good teamthat season.

Alfie’s set up for Joe Craig’s goal in our two nil win against Dundee Utd in March 1977 was very. He twisted and turned until he got a good angle to send a terrific back post cross for Joe to score.

Concluded last week. Decision will take a while, about a month or so.

HMRC no doubt realise you need to kill someone to get a draw wi home judges. And even having done that, still cannae get a result.

Final destination for this is not going to be in Scotland,I reckon.

  23. We really need to hammer this lot from the start tonight.

No ‘settling in’ – straight for the jugular, crush any optimism they may have had, eradicate hope, make them want to hide and get the pain over with.

Ergo, make them feel like yer average Hun will after Hibs do them next week…

  24. I see the Daily Record have all the goals from the Hun v Tynecastle !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????,game.A 6-0 drubbing no less. That will teach these amateur teams to mess with the “Big boys”

    Comparatively speaking ,of course.

Oh,and your points about our top players in the double season illustrate precisely why we had such a disaster after it.

Jock’s last season was a disaster. The loss of Dalglish was a difficult one to overcome,of course. Especially as he spent the pittance allowed semi-poorly.

But the injuries and illnesses that team had to contend with were beyond belief.

“But its Charlie that has me worried”

And why would that be?.Think I can feel the start of a witch hunt against one of our better players starting.I have no reason why.Because the guy was out injured?.I see no other reason.WGS could not wait to get Charlie back, and with his performance after such a long lay-off,you could see why.Against far better players than he will face tonight.

In my opinion,Charlie is one of our most gifted players.A wand of a left foot,so difficult to find. Can play,CH,LB,midfield, and has done without question for the club, probably to the detriment of his career.Always gives his best, but like every player on the planet, can have a bad game.

I will watch with interest the future comments on the boy,but as I said,I can feel a wee witch hunt starting against the player.Shameful,as the season has not even started.
