Bring it on, Celtic

Icelandic champions, you say?  Not much to worry about there, you would hope.  But Stjarnan knocked Lech Poznan out of Europe last season, and Poznan went on to take the Polish league from our old pals Legia Warsaw, who were a pretty decent team last season.

Stjarnan were not nearly as good as Lech Poznan, nor were they as good as Motherwell, who they also put out of Europe a year ago, but get your close-season wrong (the Polish Ekstraklasa doesn’t break until June), and you’re out, no matter if it’s Stjarnan or Maribor on the match ticket.

Let me put it another way, I wouldn’t fancy St Johnstone against Stjarnan right now, and Saints won at Celtic Park as recently as March.  A red card in the wrong place (need I remind you of Efe, big Dan?) and you’re in trouble.

I’ve not seen the new livery on Celtic Park, the photos of which look superb, so I’ll be along early tonight to drink in the summer atmosphere.  There’s also the anticipation of looking forward to seeing a few new faces in competitive action for Celtic for the first time.

The most important performance of tonight will be from Dedryck Boyata.  More than any other area of the team, defence is all about partnerships, so how quickly Dedryck fills the Jason Denayer gap will go a long way to determining whether Celtic qualify for the Champions League group stage this season.

Remember to swap out your old season ticket from your wallet with your NEW ticket!

Bring it on, Celtic.

I covered this yesterday probably before before you asked but touched in earlier.

You subscription will stop you viewing live even using a vpn.

You will get audio commentary only.

The only chance is to find a stream pirating what overseas subscribers get from Celtic TV.

Such anomalies are indirectly a result of price difference to attend from price to watch.

If Celtic could pull in the same price to watch as they do to attend its a whole new ball game.

With the importance of set pieces, especially in Europe, have we invested in ‘set piece coaching’ yet?

How many goals do we score pro rata from corner kicks or direct free kicks ? 1 in 20 ? 1 in 30 ? Not many I would suggest.

Perhaps trying something different occasionally might upset an organised defensive set up which we will meet often this season. Would come from the training ground obviously but surely worth some time there – margins can be slim, especially with so much at stake in Europe.

And think that when we take a corner, always send a second player out – most teams then send out 2 markers, so for 1 extra player, we take 2 from their defensive roles. If not, then 2 on 1 from edge of box?

Think we will start with …

    Gordon

    Lustig Boyata Mulgrew Izzy

    Broony Bitton

    GMS Joe Hansen Armstrong

    Griffiths

.. with Shifty, Forrest and Fisher as possibles from the bench.

3-0 will do for me – COYBIG

I agree with all you say, but again in only my opinion charlie has fell behind those I mentioned, he clearly is needed in the squad, but is no longer a first pick, in saying that, I thought he was tremendous in both matches against the Republic.

  5. turkeybhoy

Maybe they could bring in a “specialists team”.to bring in charlie for corners and free kicks

Surely Collins is taking the set piece training.

He could strike one during his playing days and he also had a bit of invention at times.

One of the things I have been impressed with since his arrival is the corners taken by Stuart Armstrong. I suspect that Ciftci will benefit from those penalty spot to 6 yard line corners once he has settled.

I think our set pieces are fine but don;t disagree with anyone who says they could be better.

A wee while ago I read on here the brilliant report on the 7-1 game by that great football reporter, the late Cyril Horne of the Gasgow Herald. As someone who was lucky enough to be at that game. needless to say , I enjoyed this report which brought back many happy memories to me. Apart from anything else, it reminded me of what a fair and unbiassed reporting looked like – something which is a rarity to-day. I would like to thank whoever submitted this gem to C.Q.N. and suggest that this report would be an excellent item for a C.Q.N. Magazine, if this is possible.

WC, a sevconian I know has done exactly that. Was a Govan stand season ticket holder for many years. Didn’t renew this year stating that he’d simply had enough.. Decent bloke, certainly not a hun. It’s the rugger for him now.. .

In a Costa Blanca bar earlier and got chatty with the Bulgarian owner. Loves his football etc and when I said I was Scottish he went right in at the deep end.

Before asking what team I support it was.. ‘Rangers they die because f### with taxman, please explain to me’

I replied that it went deeper than that, the cheating and corruption, gave him a potted history over an extra pint.

Anyway the guy knew his stuff and apart from sussing me as non-hun , he was clued up on ‘those nasty nasty Rangers fans’, saying he’s experienced them a few times in his 13 years here. His tip Bell rang.

Any cqnrs in The Bodhran bar Benidorm for the game tonight I might catch you.

I advise you use your Swiss bank account

I share your thoughts on the corners of Stuart Armstrong very consistent and well placed Joe is an able tacker from the left also.

At Centre back tonight I would be more concerned about our new bhoy having stage fright than the Charlie with his experience

  18. Well,

I have to say, I am quite chuffed with myself. Just bought a season ticket. An Overseas Season Ticket to be precise.

I recall Auldheid talking about these last season. John Paul Taylor was at our Convention in Vegas, and clarified a few things about these tickets.

It really is a good deal from all angles.

You get 5 tickets. One for each of 5 league games. Or – 5 for one game, or any other permutation. This means, if you only get home once, you can bring nieces, nephews, etc and get full use of your ticket.

Also, as a season ticket holder, you have the right to buy your seat for European games. No more begging family and friends for those big Champions League nights.

And, if you are so inclined (I am not), you can buy your seat if sevco ever make the top league.

And….you get a subscription to Celtic TV. If you take that into account, it makes a LOT of financial sense.

And, the biggest thing of all, your seat gets used to bring folk to see Celtic. Folk who otherwise could not afford to do so.

So, if you only get home to Scotland once in a season, there is great value in buying an Overseas Season Ticket.

For those suspicious minds out there, no-one is paying me to talk these up. It just feels good to have this additional connection with the Club, from all these miles away….:)

There’s no way the Icelanders should present a challenge to us.

They will park their trawler to compensate for the gulf in class.

The only real doubt for all of us is our lack of competitive match fitness.

Notwithstanding I’m going to go out on a limb and predict a

    4 goal win

    For the good ghuys.

BSR … yes ..I’d imagine that Efe must get a fair bit of torque on that move, which must generate a fair bit of wind …. a strong gust of wind like that too close to ML and he could break a bone or something! :)
