Bring the glory home from Perth

393

Willie Maley’s 1917 62-game unbeaten run in domestic football (or just football, as it was back then) was matched against Kilmarnock, but as Rangers fans found out in 1998, you should never assume that just because you can match a record, you can beat it.

Tomorrow Celtic’s shot at history goes on the line at McDiarmid Park against St Johnstone, where we last lost a domestic game, back in May 2016. St Johnstone have already relieved Celtic of a couple of points this season, and will have no fears of what they face in tomorrow’s early kick off.

For Brendan Rodgers, the challenge will be to peak energy levels after an emotionally and physically draining evening against Bayern Munich on Tuesday. His players are Celtic, not Robotic, and he will know there is a very real chance of a reversal, if we are anything less than 100% prepared.

History is yours for the taking, Celtic.  Bring the glory home from Perth.

  3. Question on parking fine from the Forge.

I was back in Scotland for the Hibs game, parked in the Forge parking lot and went shopping at the B & Q before going to the game.

The car rental company have taken their admin fee and sent me the parking charge notice from Smart Parking for 45 pounds.

I recall previous discussions on this and the advice was don’t pay the fine.

Anyone else run into this issue?

I will also be chatting to my relatives who told me it was “no problem” parking for the game.

Just seen you on the BBC report on the Battle of Montevideo. Its just a pity they couldn’t show a balanced report of the attacks on our players concentrating more on the acts of retaliation making us look like the bad guys.

  13. From CSA

Each year in November we get put under pressure by the Poppy Fascist’s to agree with their opinions about how to remember those who lost their lives in war. A lot of people believe as I do that it is a personal issue, and people should pay their respects as they see fit.

It’s not even all the people who lost their lives, just those who fall into the category they believe should be remembered. But in the last few years it’s getting worse, it seems that everyone who appears on live television is forced to wear a poppy.

The real hypocrites are those who have imported this into sport, and mostly football. Celtic have paid plenty of fines for what UEFA called political demonstrations by the display of some banners, and they were backed by the SFA/SPFL.

Tomorrow once again the trap has been set, this time the poacher is St Johnstone. They have informed Celtic that a Minutes Silence will be held tomorrow before our match. They never indicated during the pre-match meeting that was the case, they waited until late this afternoon to contact Celtic.

With all the roadworks going on tomorrow around Perth there will obviously be supporters arriving late, some will be caught out not knowing about the silence, and no doubt the microphones will be there to catch any noise.

I’m not going to ramble on about the merits of Poppies or minutes silences. I will remain outside until it’s over with, and I would suggest that anyone who doesn’t agree with the minutes silence does likewise. If supporters are happy with the silence then by all means take part.

It looks like this situation in November is never going to change. If they don’t want to leave the politics at home, maybe the supporters will remain at home instead. I will be seriously considering whether I return to St Johnstone for any more games.

In 1972 I worked with an Argentinian who told me that Celtic, although a good footballing team, had been very naive…He suggested spitting, pinching and general goading were part and parcel of the game in his country and that my team were wee lambs up against big bad wolves…

  15. Dear God,I thought the Huns were bad.Reading some of the replies to the news that one third of 18 to 24 year olds would not wear a Poppy.

What a paradise Britain would be without all the dregs of society that ordinary decent people with common sense and right thinking, have to put up with daily whether they like it or not.

  16. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan on

    Winning Captains/Canman/WeeBobbyCollins

    Guys,

The interview with the beeb was over 30 minutes long and in the main it concentrated on my memories of the trip and just how horrible Racing club and the Argentinian fans were.

However, mixed in with all of that I told a few stories about how 106 fans got to Buenos Aries, what they did when they got there, and on the way there, and what a fantastic adventure it was despite the games being awful.

For me, it was the start of a series of trips that would take me to Milan, Amsterdam, Lisbon, and numerous other places following Celtic and being with adults who saw the very best of our team and who set the bar, the standard and the style of how we would support in Europe.

If you like, these people made and shaped the reputation of our supporters abroad — and of course that is a style and a reputation that continues to this day.

There will be a longer Radio piece on Sunday, I am told, lasting around 10 minutes.

Hopefully that will capture the flavour of what we talked about.

  17. A reply from The British Legion

The Legion will always defend the rights of individuals who choose not to wear a poppy, and we oppose those who attempt to coerce or criticise people who make this personal choice.

We take the view that the poppy represents the sacrifices and contributions our Armed Forces community have made in the defence of freedom and so the decision to wear it must be a matter of personal choice

“If the poppy became compulsory it would lose its meaning and significance.

I wish some of the Poppy Gestapo would pay heed.

  18. BRTH.

    Hopefully indeed.

Best counsel in these situations is to avoid unless you have control of the narrative and the composition of the “story”………..Let’s not unwittingly help those who would gladly see our Club in a poor light.

Perhaps best to leave media relations to the pro’s?

  19. Tuesday was brilliant but in the end we lost the game, & that made it 2 games in a row without a win. Hardly a disaster but all the same I most certainly do not want that sequence increased to 3.

For some reason I’m feeling very nervous about tomorrow, maybe it’s the new record being on the line but I just feel a lot more anxious than I should.

I don’t want a tight edgy game, just want Celtic to put the game to bed early so I can relax & enjoy my weekend.

  20. in may 1953 i was 4 years old. also celtic won the coronation cup by beating 3 teams who were they.

Might be hard to believe but the 1969 InterContinental Cup game at La Bombonera between Estudantes and Milan was even worse.Well worth looking up..Milan won 4-2 on aggregate..They won 3-0 in Milan -a game in which the great Gianni Rivera ripped a bunch of thugs to shreds. He and the rest of the Milan team paid a heavy price for that in Argentina.Check it out -look at the photos.Wild !

Your situation is complicated by having a hire car.

In ordinary circumstances,I’d suggest ignoring it. However, the vehicle owner has paid the invoice and passed on the cost to you. This is now an issue over the contract between yourself and the hire company. The contract will state that you are liable for fines, etc, incurred which they will pay and pass on to you. Your position is that it is not a fine,it is an invoice.

I wish you luck on it.
