Broomloan brilliance, hopeless imposter

389

Just catching up on the post-Ibrox analysis after a busy weekend. A few observations:

Celtic opened very well but our passing out of defence fell apart after 10 minutes and didn’t get back on track until Scott Sinclair decided he was taking control at halftime. If I wanted to make an excuse, I’d say we were rusty due to the formation only just returning to normal for the first time this season, but this may be over-generous.

Scott demonstrated why he was Player of the Year last season. He has what it takes to swing big games. The game can be divided into two parts: times when Sinclair had the ball inside the Newco box, and all other times. You could sense the terror in blue at the former.

On the Newco penalty claim: I’m not sure. Jozo pulled out of the challenge, which I suspect is why the referee didn’t give it, but I would have claimed if it was the other way around.

It was clear to everyone in the Broomloan Stand that Leigh Griffith was claiming for a penalty in the first half, although none of us knew why. Young Beckenbauer in the Newco defence extended his arms and made his body big as the ball dropped onto his hand.

The rules are clear on this one, allow your arms to leave the confines of your body and you’ve transgressed if the ball strikes a hand or arm. Sky Television viewers were then transported to an alternate universe, where they were told, “Leigh Griffiths is claiming for a corner kick”. There is an intellectual pain experienced when you are part of a group treated to ‘expert’ analysis like this. I was embarrassed as a viewer.

While Scott Sinclair was the custard in your doughnut, the second goal was a product of crisp passing down the right. Callum McGregor was worthy of an honourable mention here. He has the craft to compliment Patrick Roberts’ level of astonishing-ness.

There will be quite a number of people who are walking around Lennoxtown today full of the joys because of the save Craig Gordon made with the score at 0-1. This was not a normal reaction save, it was the result of a planned and practiced manner in which to close-down an opponent who is about to head the ball. Look again at how Craig moves his body.

It was a big moment and speaks of the technical preparation of the goalkeepers.

Scott Brown remains is in the form of his life. He waltzed around Ibrox like he owned the place. Although with the alleged condition of the structure, that honour may be an onerous one.

The knives are out for Brother Pedro, who spent millions but has not noticeably improved his team. This is a little unfair. Newco’s problems run deeper than Pedro, and let’s face it, they would be in a far worse situation if he had not banned green boots.

This guy knows what he’s doing, no way is he an hopeless imposter, no way at all. And, if they ever score an important goal, Pedro’s instructions to congregate to celebration will also prove invaluable.

Let’s not get too carried away with ourselves. Ibrox was the aperitif, as they say in Europe. The main course is in Brussels on Wednesday, and that will prove to be a far greater challenge.

Have to say that your comment to JIMTHETIM53 yesterday disappointed me.

This weekends game was a watershed.

It has marked the before and after in terms of media hope of a Hunco revival.

I’m surprised at the amount of pundits who have finally arrived at the conclusion that Hunco are just another team in the group of also rans as far as Celtic are concerned. I even heard one of them declare Hunco are no different to Ross County (although they have fired their manager first!)…

I think all hope for Hunco had gone. Some truly pathetic utterances from the likes of Dorran being reported today. A forming team etc. The real soul searching they should be conducting is why aren’t they 2nd? Why can’t they beat Thistle on 90 minutes?

These are the questions that need to occupy them. Using Celtic as a benchmark is like Celtic fans asking why we can’t outspend or compete with PSG.

  4. on the previous article – why did celtic play at ibrox and not hampden ?

    ————————

Jock Stein beat Oldco Rangers three times in a month in season 1971/72. Two League Cup-ties and a league game were played at Ibrox with Celtic Park under reconstruction.

The Hoops won 2-0 in the first Cup confrontation on August 14 with goals from Kenny Dalglish and Jimmy Johnstone. Stein’s men returned a fortnight later and triumphed 3-0 with Dalglish, Bobby Lennox and Tommy Callaghan on target.

Two weeks later in the league, Celtic were 3-2 victors with Dalglish scoring for a third successive game. Johnstone and Lou Macari got the others.

Good news stories from the weekend for two loan-outs in the Championship. Sam Wardrop played 90mins and scored the winner for Dumbarton v ICT. Jamie McCart played 90mins for St Mirren on BBC Alba in a 3-1 victory v QoS.

I think Jamie has a natural advantage over Sam, as far as earning a professional living from the game, being left-footed. Both, however, are doing the right things for now – train well, get in the team, win. Good luck to all Celts.

  6. The Battered Bunnet on

But for an absurd halftime hardman cameo by Pedro Caixinha, it was all very routine on Saturday.

The Celtic team came along, played some football, and left a couple of hours later with the habitual points.

I rather got the impression in the first half that they weren’t really taking it all that seriously. Certainly, the casual approach to finishing during the first 45 minutes betrayed an impression that, with each chance passed up, there would be another coming along shortly. Ach, it’s a just a chance, no big deal.

Personally, I prefer a more cold-blooded, decisive and ruthless approach to taking chances, something that those watching the match with me were left in no doubt of.

At the back, I thought Dedryck, after 10 weeks out, tried very hard to remember how to defend, with the odd lapse in recall. Mikael Lustig worried me though, his aptness to forget about the guy at the back post quite alarming at times, with no recent period injured to excuse his absent-mindedness.

Come Wednesday night, with chances fewer and further between, the result will likely turn on which team defends better and in turn converts their chances most efficiently. Let’s trust Saturday’s performance, front and back, wasn’t habit-forming.

As I recall, the price for White to buy Rangers went from £6m to £1 due to an outstanding tax bill. And that was reported at the time.

    Widely.

Why else would Murray let it go for a quid?

Strangely, that point of negotiation only occurred after March 31.

    Go figure.

A one line belter from James Forrest’s blog

“King is a glory hunter. The problem with being that at Ibrox is the distinct absence of glory”

    boom boom…………..

  9. The search will continue in the coming week to find hun sympathizers who will claim they dominated the first half and only a refereeing error stopped them going ahead.

These guys who sit at home waiting on calls from presstitutes and letters from the tax man will describe a first half that only exists in their minds.

Wonderboy who even Walker pointed out had a hand in both goals and got away with hand ball in the box will be the subject of calls for Scotland call up.

Morelos will continue to score against average teams but the comparisons to genuine South American superstars will be ramped up.

I think the first game was at Celtic Park. An away match for them.

    Officially,of course. Ibrox in reality.

My hun mates in Kilwinning told me it would be different when they were at home!

If yer gonna have hun mates, make sure they have a sense of humour. They’re gonna need it.

  11. I’ll post this article for anyone who has an interest in the plight of the Australian Aboriginal community and it’s recent history since colonisation. It gives a insight into their experiences , with firsthand accounts of their treatment which was brutal at times.

There is a clear link between the stolen generation and it’s effects on them as individuals and their communities that are currently playing a major part in the numerous problems/issues they have IMO.

MSM play a damaging role in the portrayal of their communities with little to no comment on the effects of the stolen generation,as if should be forgotten about as it was a long time ago. People were being removed right up to the 1970s.

They only show the effects of that removal in terms of the alcohol/drug abuse and domestic violence that is prevalent for modern day Aboriginals which was never part of their traditional culture.

This media engineered image of Australian Aboriginals engender the type of stereotypes which suggests that their problems are all of their own making, which is only a very small part of the overall picture IMO.

It conveniently excludes any major discussion around the trauma endured by the indigenous population and it’s enevitable consequences which are being played out today.

Aye – really generous guy that Murray. Giving up £6m for something that was only a “potential” tax bill!

  16. If NFL (as manager) had squared up to the sevco captain at half time, he’d have been in the dock by now and charged with everything from bringing the game into disrepute to cycling at night without a headlamp.

The wheels have come off Pedro the Portuguese Man O War’s caravan. The only dog barking is him. Barking mad that is.

  18. I’m sure we all remember when NFL lost his cool with Jim Goodwin from the sidelines. Managers can get a bit heated at times too.

  19. “Patsy” Caixinha is just along for the ride imo……

……he’ll soon be run out of town to be replaced by that most mysterious of characters the “reel rainjurz man”….

In the meantime Pedro will continue to be worked from behind with ever increasing desperation hitting out comically at anything that moves…….like a drunk man chasin’ a balloon.

Yeah – he got a 3 match ban. So a reasonable expectation is that Pedro should get the same.

So – has Pedro been served with a “Notice of Complaint” yet?

  22. Additionally, when “snarling” Neil Lennon was involved in a “touchline bust up” with “cheeky” Alisdair McCoist in an “Old Firm powekeg match” …..it led to a government inquiry and a law change to “even up” the number of Kafflics getting lifted by Polis Scotland.

Seems that Pedro can do what he wants and it’s no big deal’cause he’s a “likeable Portuguese”.

So you’ve swallowed the ‘they’ve spent millions’ bullshit?

Caixinha is irrelevant his players come from a poundshop, they’ll hang on to Aberdeen’s coat tails, at best.
