Brown and Lustig with international and Champions League conflicts

848

A year ago you and I discussed Scott Brown’s fitness with some concern for the season ahead. Since then the captain has not skipped a beat, his form and availability for selection have been without question.

It is clear he can cope with a Scotland game this weekend, and no doubt finish the season untroubled, but Scotland have an international against England on 10 June, two weeks after the Scottish Cup final, and four weeks before Celtic’s Champions League qualification campaign gets underway.

If Scott is to participate in all games, he will have a week off after the Scottish Cup final before being called into the Scotland squad, then two weeks before Celtic’s preseason training starts. For a player of his age, with his injury profile, this schedule would not allow sufficient recuperation ahead of a new season.

Selfishly, the most important thing to you and I, and to Celtic, is Champions League qualification, more so than the Scottish Cup, or than a season of invincibility, delightful, though both would be. What Brendan Rodgers backroom team need to do is prepare Scott as thoroughly as possible for the middle of July. Planning should start now.

If there’s another player in the Celtic squad who I would also like to ration his football it’s Mikael Lustig. The Sweden international is likely to be involved in both their international squad in June; a World Cup qualifier against France and a derby against Norway.

If Scotland fail to get a positive result against Slovenia on Sunday, Scott might consider it best to retire from the international stage, again. He and Mikael could do with a few weeks on the beach at the end of the season.

Biggest load of pish I’ve read on here in quite some time. There has hardly been a game this season for Celtic where Scott Brown was not either man of the match or in top three. You have an irrational hatred of the man.

I bet he is the first on Brendans team sheet every week.

  2. Survey done here before the sun was up.

SFA? Clear out from top to bottom. After which, a modern, progressive executive team should be in place to shrug off the blazers and build the game back up from grassroots level.

Oh, and sort out referees officiating games of teams they have held a season book for in the past…

The patter in your commentary over Scott Brown’s abilities is rotten.

Top European players have both complimented and criticized him in equal measure this last CL season. All measures that they rate him.

Scott Brown is the heartbeat of the team currently. A leader on and off the field, and a man whom you are glad is in the trenches alongside you.

MON’s team would have had the current Scott Brown in it as a right sided midfielder, no question.

  4. Is it true that Ibrox is a dedicated Masonic Lodge?

That being the case then surely there is a monumental conflict of interest in a Masonic official officiating in such a venue?

Looking at this historical issue from a different angle if this is indeed the case

    Thoughts?

  5. I see both Honduras and Costa Rica have big games against the USA and Mexico respectively later.

Embdae ken if our two Central American Bhoys are playing for their teams?

  6. We should be looking for Scott Brown’s long term replacement this summer, allow the new guy a season or two playing beside Brown. John McGinn should be that man.

  7. The Scotland international set up is a mirror of the SFA.

Inept and to biased to be any good.

The mssm and Scottish F A would rather have a crap team than a fair representation of talent available.

Picking that donkey Wallace being the perfect example.

Their prejudice and ineptitude is killing the game while they pick up huge wages and freebies as compensation.

On the field we have a notoriously insecure coach whose only tactic seems to be not to lose.

His selection of second rate journeymen from England and refusal to pick the SPL’S top scorer reflect’s this.

Until we clear out the Hamdump freeloaders no decent coach will touch the job.

We have ways to go before football is finished as a sport in Scotland but that’s only because Celtic the team they despise are keeping the flames flickering.

Your analysis of Scott Brown is based upon what?

During the Group Stages of the ECL Scott brown had one of the top passing accuracy rates and one of the highest passing totals: all against very good opposition.

On the matter of clearing out the SFA there will never be a greater opportunity this year if the Celtic support and supporters of other clubs work towards that end.

Just read the etims article, some of which I had seen before.

Is there not a process to create pressure on politicians to investigate SFA governance in the same way the FA was by Westminster? It seems to me politicians would just love to get into this.

    Just a random thought

Best bet is the Scottish Football Supporters Association.

Unlike Supporters Direct they are not based in England and are not in SFA/SPFL’s pocket and have good contacts at Hollyrood.

Emulating what has happened with Westminster MPS and FA is on the agenda.

  18. On route to the Aviva Stadium for the Ireland v Wales game. I’ve a feeling it’s going to be a cracker of a game with Ireland edging it. Hopefully we’ll see a bit of magic from McGeady to see us over the finishing line. Big games needed from Whelan, Hendrick and McCarthy in the middle while I also feel Coleman will keep a tight grip of Bale. Here’s hoping for an Irish win in a mild Dublin.

Much as I would love to be joining the Lisbon Pilgrimage, sadly Mrs TTT does not quite share my enthusiasm for such a venture (or to be more precise, the expenses I would wrack up on said venture) and therefore , I must look on in jealousy from afar.

The irony for me (or rather to add insult to my injury) is that I shall actually be at home that particular week!

I shall continue to attempt to find a way for me to join you all, but for the time being its no more than a pipe dream unfortunately.

In recent days Paul has sought to reassure us on here that Celtic are or will be in good shape for the challenges which lay ahead in the CL qualifiers in the summer. To that end we had paeans to both Dedryk and Jozo, and their projected roles in the summer, despite the fact that the former was almost on the way out, and the latter was most definitely on the way out after Brendan arrived. That suggests to me that when our manager says the club failed to meet the targets he set for them, he was specifically referring to a new centre back. Paul says don’t worry we now have that covered. Likewise with Scott Brown and Michael Lustig, both still capable at domestic level, less so at both International and CL level. But the message is that we have the resources to qualify for the CL if only our players can get enough rest beforehand. Fine as it goes, along as we continue to ignore the fact that we will need to strengthen in the very areas Paul claims we are strong, full back, central defence and midfield. All the hymns of praise on here will not change that. But hopefully Brendan will.

  21. Did anyone see the BBC 6 o’clock National News? Comic Relief. Interview with Ed Sheehan in one of the African countries with some children. Large Celtic crest on the wall behind Ed. My hawk-eyed grandson noticed it and rewound programme for me so I could see it. :-))

I promise I won’t post another plug for Goals For Shay 2 tonight. Unless, of course, someone asks me to. Would then be rude not to do so ;-)
