Scottish football has gone through months of drama and uncertainty to rescue ‘Rangers’. Only weeks ago we were told a CVA was likely. Once this failed the question of today’s SPL vote crystallised.
The SPL met several times to discuss this matter, even doing so before Rangers CVA failed. Sentiment was firmly behind Newco, to the extent that some were worried they would be allowed into the league without any sanction (if one Ayrshire club had their way). All this changed when Charles Green and Duff and Phelps agreed to challenge the SFA at the Court of Session. At the SPL meeting following this decision the mood changed dramatically.
I then had several friends in the media rubbish my suggestion that Newco were far from certain of being voted into the SPL. To be fair to them, my information was not coming from Neil Doncaster, whereas theirs was. If Doncaster was so assured when speaking to the media, day after day, we can only imagine what he was saying to Green. His influence has not been helpful to the cause he championed.
Clubs, who were previously weighing up the argument, suddenly had a convincing point to consider. Rangers going to court was the biggest own goal in their 140 year history. Terry Butcher, eat your heart out.
After this Green was at the mercy of fortune, and the growing influence of the hawk(s) in the SPL who saw no need to create space for Newco. In many respects, John Brown is correct. Having gambled and failed, Green did whatever he could to accommodate but there was no way back. Underestimate John Brown at your peril, he has his club’s interests at heart and has the fortitude to raise a phoenix from the ruins of Ibrox. His unconventional style is easy to mock but it is just what needed (I truly believe this).
Where now for the Newco-Sevco-Rangers? I don’t see a solution. Sooner or later Mr Green will let his friends know they only way forward is for him to acquire an existing Scottish Football League club, rename it to something like Rangers United, and move it to Ibrox.
The toxic history would be set free and it would be game-on. Keep your eye on Cowdenbeath.

Well, Scottish Football is only dead for Old Firm fans (which is different from Celtic & Rangers fans), the remainder can set up a league where fans have a more even chance of success. It was under this environment of course where we reached our two European Cup finals.
Scottish football shouldn’t be forced to pay for the failure of the Old Firm (and I am referring this time to Celtic & Rangers) who only wanted to play one another under the pretence of a domestic league. Doing so, fans of every other club became disenfranchised and left the game, hopefully only temporarily.
It is not wholly ironic (and is likely in hindsight, highly coincidental) that the last time Celtic played the semi final of the European Cup was the last year of the 18 team league.
Increasingly Paul, you have very much came across as an Old Firm fan. You’ve wanted Celtic to have their cake (vote no) but everyone else to vote yes to newco.
Scottish Football will move forward with or without former Old Firm fans who may choose to indulge themselves watching the EPL and think what might have been. Whatever happens, the concept of the Old Firm and the songs that rejoiced in it are now consigned to history.

Great news today and a shot over the bows of the SPL and SFA. If Doncaster, Regan and Ogilive do not see that their days are numbered then hopefully the government review into Scottish football will focus their minds. They are there not to ensure the survival of one club but to protect and promote the Scottish game. I would expect them to drop their heads in shame and slink off…whats the chance of that happening?
I was going to say that Scottish football is on par with the Italians for blatant corruption but at least the SPL, forced by the will of true football people…the supporters, have done the right thing. Well done to the fans of all SPL (and hopefully SFL) clubs for reclaiming the game from the cheats and the megalomaniacs. Thank you one and all!

There are lots of calls on here for Celtic/PL to ‘get involved’, ‘start calling the shots’, ‘make a statement’ etc. … With the news today that WESTMINSTER (not the establishment, sorry that should read, Scottish Government) are to probe the state of Scottish Football (as in ‘What a state its in!’), it sounds to me that Celtic ARE beavering away behind the scenes just fine and I for one am comfortable at present with Celtic’s non-public approach to this. What you have to remember is that no real decisions have been made yet that Celtic could/should comment on and in fact ANY statement just now will be seized on by a rabid and desperate Scottish Media and missappropriated and twisted to suit the clearly corrupt and ‘heavily-conflicted’ ‘Establishment’ cause.
Patience is clearly a Celtic Virtue!
Lets win the war! (‘Victory’ for me is the simple(?) rights of fair play, sporting integrity, unbiased professional refereeing, religious tolerance and sporting entertainment based on Celtic Excellence and Scottish Excellence. I don’t expect to win every game and can cope with being beaten (hopefully only occasionally :-) ) fair and square. We are still way off winning this war, but Celtic’s seeds are sown on fertile ground and the roots are strong and it is clear that others are sown on the shifting sands of corruption.)
