BT’s successful £897m bid for UK Champions League and Europa League rights is one of the most significant commercial developments for Celtic in years – if we continue to qualify for the Champions League group stage.
This money, £299m per season, more than double the current deal, is paid directly to Uefa. What participating teams receive is directly linked to the value their domestic TV rights raise. If Scottish clubs participate, they earn 10% of the UK distribution.
Scottish Premiership TV rights are currently shared by BT and Sky but they are worth a fraction of what they went for the last time a competitor (Setanta) made a genuine challenge to Sky. It would literally take loose change from BT’s budget to remove Sky from the required list of providers for Scottish football fans. Whatever the next SPFL deal looks like, having two major players bidding should ensure it is worth a lot more money.
The same is true for English football rights. 20 years ago Sky built their UK business on the back of English Premier League broadcast rights. If BT want to supplant them in the TV market, enhance their ISP position and secure a lead in the emerging services on-demand market, English Premier League rights will be the major battleground.
BSkyB share prices is down around 10% today, reflecting the reality that they will either have to pay a whole lot more for the same rights in future, or they risk losing market share. I’d be very happy to dump Sky, which has recently resembled a tax on committed Scottish football fans without the corresponding revenue spend.

SoT-thanks,i know they offered him a new deal but not sure if he signed it.
To be fair, Holland is a bigger country than Scotland in terms of population. They have a better pool of talent to choose from.
Not to mention the superior coaching infrastructure, better facilities and boys with the right attitude.
Anybody who’s been around the Celtic youth setup knows exactly what I mean about attitude.

WOW…..some mhan………!!!!!!!!
Just came across this nice appreciative fan article from Swindon about one of our ex youth players who looked for a while as if he might make it. Good to see he is still a pro at a good level.

Sorry, forgot my actual point.
Celtic can do A LOT better. But there are plenty of things out of the clubs control when it comes to developing youth players on the level of the elite.
Who is the icelandic striker we’re closing in on?

Gonnae make yur posts a wee bit shoretur…….takes me ages to scroll past them…..LOL
The most simple thing about not bringing in a £5/6m striker is that we cannot break the wage structure. If we gave a new signing £25/£30k per week a lot of the existing players would be demanding the same and rightly so I feel. As was said the model is the one that suits us right now as we are ultimately in survival mode until something happens in Scotland like a European League or us going south. Although maybe a Motherwell bborn billionaire with wealth off the radar will show up!

I’ll see what I can do, young fella…!!
Good Afternoon Timland.
Not really that excited about the BT deal,as far as I can
see football will simply switching master’s…….the genie
is well and truly out the bottle……..back in 1977 Celtic
went to Easter rd needing a win to secure the title. the
then Hibs chairman Tom Hart banned tv coverage, he
felt that football was suffering from over exposure.
He was vilified by the Celtic support, denying us a
chance to watch highlights of our victory…….all these
year’s later Mr Hart should be seen as a man of vision.
Also guys look at the fact that Hooper took a few months to settle in and didn’t have the “pressure” of European football to worry about in his first year. It also took him until October to score his first SPL goal. Give Pukki time, he only played 37 games at two seasons in Germany so I think he needs to find that striker sharpness you only get from consistent game time.
Old Tim I know it,s stating the obvious but have you checked with Laura-ann? Hail Hail Hebcelt
What did Ajax do with the Cruyff money?
Holmbert Aron Fridjonsson ?
We’re NEVER gonna be able to work his name into a chant.
Na, just forget about him, Celtic.
Anyone know what Victor and Gary are earning in the EPL?

Oh,ffs.
Wage structure again.
Anyone reckon Chris Smalling-established England international,remember-is on the same rate as RVP?
Ozil on the same as another England international,Kieron Gibbs?
What an utter cop-out.
I am getting scunnered by lack of ambition from our board, and getting thoroughly p….d off by the same from so many on here.
SFTB’s post may have been a work of beauty to many on here-and I confess to an enjoyment whenever he posts-but to me it just gives the board an opportunity to say…
“Wel,we are doing what the fans want!”
Few of us middle-grounders and mineshafters want the board to break the club by reckless spending on fees and wages. None,I suspect.
But we want bang for buck. We want to know there’s gonna be a show, and The Glasgow Celtic will be there.
Not a bloody balance sheet. And certainly not the dross we have been subjected to this season.
I would change from Sky to BT in a minute if I could be assured that BT presenters and producers don’t wear the same red, white and blue underwear that the sky lot wear.
67Heaven … I am Neil Lennon, supporting WEE OSCAR..!!.. Ibrox belongs to the creditors.
Much obliged,old pal?.
Heb Celt,
That was my first port of call,no luck so far.
I was surprised when I heard here in the US that NBC had outbid Fox Sports for the EPL coverage. NBC do not have a history of ‘soccer’ coverage and Fox were well established with good content and decent match day analysers. One of the drawbacks of the Fox service was that you had to subscribe to one of the more expensive channel packages with your TV provider to access the channel. Live on-line coverage was not readily available, although there was another premium service you could subscribe to to get mobile content. The only way to get live coverage was to use one of the pirate feeds, which while better than nothing was not great.
Now, with NBC, I have to say the on-line coverage is outstanding. If you have a basic TV service, you can access all of NBC’s content through your TV providers web site. Every EPL game is broadcast live and you can chose which one you want to watch. Every game has links on the screen to replays of action, such as goals, bookings etc which you replay at any time. At half time every game is reviewed and the highlights shown.
If this is the path the new BT service will take, then it can’t come soon enough for you guys in the UK. Not sure how they will make this happen with live broadcasts affecting attendances, but the technology is great. This coupled with CelticTV, means my Saturday mornings are no longer productive.
Oldtim 67 I may -I stress may- have one for you . Keep in touch and as soon as I know you can have 1st refusal. Hail Hail Hebcelt

Might be worth considering WHY he only played 37 games.
I want him to succeed as much as anyone-I said in a phone call to a much-revered poster on here who has forgotten more about Celtic than I know(which narrows it down)that he is clearly a “confidence” player. As are one or two others on our fringe who I referenced.
Had that shot from the edge of the area at the start if the season gone in instead of hitting the bar,we would probably have a different player.
But it didn’t and we don’t.
What we have is a guy who in his entire career has scored less often than Charlie Nicholas did in Maestros.
In one weekend ….

Celtic are closing in on a move for Icelandic striker Holmbert Aron Fridjonsson.
The 20-year-old, who scored 12 goals in 23 appearances for Fram in the 2013 season, is subject to a transfer bid from the Scottish champions.
STV understands Fridjonsson, who spent time on trial at Lennoxtown earlier this month, would cost Celtic £120,000 as part of a structured deal.
Both clubs are in negotiations over the transfer of the player, with a deal appearing to be imminent to complete his signing at the start of the January transfer window.
Fram chairman Sverrir Einarsson told STV: “We have received an offer. We responded to Celtic last night and we are waiting to hear again from them. They are not far away [in terms of the transfer fee].
“I think we are hoping it will happen. It would good for him, Celtic would be a very good club for him.
“He was satisfied himself with the club and he was very happy to be there [when on trial].
“He has potential. He is a special type of player. He is a very good guy and he has his family behind him.
“I would be disappointed if he didn’t go all the way in the game. I believe that he will.”
Fridjonsson scored 10 goals in 21 league appearances for Fram, who finished just above the relegation zone this year. He also scored twice in two cup appearances.
The 6ft 3in striker has also represented Iceland at Under-21 level, finding the net in his last international against France in a 4-3 defeat.
Anyone see the penalty Gary Hooper scored at the weekend?
very similar to the Dougie Dougie non penalty at Tannadice. The penalty was given and scored and everyone thought it was a penalty. There was only one foul rather than the two commited at Tannadice. None of the commentators and summarisers didn;t think it was a penalty just because he was running away from goal.
Any thoughts?

Pukki is not a striker. He is an attacking midfielder who can play up front when needed.
Pukki will be a fine player for Celtic.

The boy is a player. I don;t think the international breaks have helped. He was trying a wee bit too hard on Saturday but his movement is excellent. The goals will come.
