BT’s successful £897m bid for UK Champions League and Europa League rights is one of the most significant commercial developments for Celtic in years – if we continue to qualify for the Champions League group stage.
This money, £299m per season, more than double the current deal, is paid directly to Uefa. What participating teams receive is directly linked to the value their domestic TV rights raise. If Scottish clubs participate, they earn 10% of the UK distribution.
Scottish Premiership TV rights are currently shared by BT and Sky but they are worth a fraction of what they went for the last time a competitor (Setanta) made a genuine challenge to Sky. It would literally take loose change from BT’s budget to remove Sky from the required list of providers for Scottish football fans. Whatever the next SPFL deal looks like, having two major players bidding should ensure it is worth a lot more money.
The same is true for English football rights. 20 years ago Sky built their UK business on the back of English Premier League broadcast rights. If BT want to supplant them in the TV market, enhance their ISP position and secure a lead in the emerging services on-demand market, English Premier League rights will be the major battleground.
BSkyB share prices is down around 10% today, reflecting the reality that they will either have to pay a whole lot more for the same rights in future, or they risk losing market share. I’d be very happy to dump Sky, which has recently resembled a tax on committed Scottish football fans without the corresponding revenue spend.

BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS backs Resolution 12
That was the point I was making about Hoopers penalty at Tannadice v the one he got on Saturday. Apart from the fact there were two tackles at Tannadice the incidents were almost identical.
LB
Pukki is a link-up player. Not a number 9 like big Balde.
How does Fridjonsson’s scoring stats compare to Amido’s when he was at Guimares?
Also, would this lad walk into the first team………………or is he a project.
Also, there were some heavy hints on the blog at the weekend that we would be signing a striker in the next window.
Is this the striker?
Livibhoy

Basically you are saying that Celtic need to sign a player for £6m+ like we did with Sutton and Hartson? Those days are gone. We need to take gambles on some of these guys.
I don;t think we got it right this summer but we are not going to sign top class established EPL players.

“but to me it just gives the board an opportunity to say…
“Wel,we are doing what the fans want!””
I wouldn’t worry about that. I am in a small minority of Celtic fan opinion, even if there are a few of us on CQN.
Of course Gibbs is not paid as much as Ozil but he is on more than Gary Hooper. I had my eyes opened a few years back when West Ham’s wage bill was leaked onto the internet and you could see Boa Morte, a little used player, on £60 to 80k per week. Henrik stayed for less than he could have had at a dud club. Neil Lennon took a pay cut too.
But we lost Sutton, Agathe and Jackie once we announced we were stopping paying the wages we were when we thought an EPL or Championship move was imminent. We created false expectations then and we are still left thinking one more splurge and we’ll get it all back, like a gambler missing his high rolling days before his failed bets left him reduced to £5 accumulator punts.

Chances are, we have signed another prospect and that we will sign somebody for the starting 11 in Jan.
If available.
If the price is right.

A lot of comments opn here comparing the Ajax Academy with Lennoxtown. Aside form the fact that the Ajax Academy has been running for decades and Lennoxtown is new facility the main problem and one that hasnt been highlighted is the quality of the coaching the kids are receiving at Celtic.
Is it any wonder that very few Scottish kids can control a ball under pressure, pass under pressure, take someone on, read the game and the reason for that is the idiots who run kids football and the supposed professional coaches at the pro clubs. Kids need to learn to play football and not be afraid of losing. A goalkeeper should not be allowed to kick the ball out, he must give it to his defence who in turn must pass to the midfield and so on, the pitch could be set into areas so that this is encouraged, what you then start to see if defenders who are comfortable with the ball at their feet, midfielders who will take the ball under pressure and not be afraid. I have had my kids at a pro club and I was told that the Coerver method that is used by Spain, Real Madrid, Ajax, Arsenal only produces performing sea lions, therein lies the problem.
If you are not big, physical then you will be overlooked in this country and yet the best players we have seen over the years have not been like that, Lubo, Henrik, Laudrup, Naka..all great football players but dont have a kick in them. At some stage the coaching model needs to change and then we need to encourage our kids to fail, then try again and keep doing that and evemntually they will be 2 footed football players not just guys who play football.
Johan Cryff started all of this at Barca in the 70’s and he had that from the Ajax Academy that produced and keeps producing great players. Look at the coaching staff, De Boer, Bergkamp, Overmaars and we have Danny McGrain, a legend but is he the man to take our kids to the next level!!! I t was ain last week that Danny was working with Balde, really, shouldnt that be someone like Chris Sutton doing that or are we opnce again putting square pegs in round holes.
Lennoxtown is a great facility but we need to have the righ model that will produce technically gifted players.
John Collins is the man who should be running our youth program not some dutch guy nobody has heard of. John has a desire to see kids play the game the right way, I know he coaches my kids and when they play the difference in the way they play to the other kids on the pitch is really quite frightening.
It is about education and if you coach kids football then it is your responsibility to give them the chance to be the best they can and that starts with the coaching not the winning.
Anyone who thinks Celtic are dross, rubbish, crap, awful , terrible etc this season is going to have to wait an awful long time to think that Celtic are pleasing on the eye.
Equally, those who think the Board are dreadful, are going to wait a very long time to regard any Board as a success.
Neither of the above points excludes the fact (?) that there is still room for improvement.

BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS backs Resolution 12
Nobody will pay Gibbs as much as Ozil but plenty would pay more than Celtic would for Finnboagsson or probably what we are offering Ledley. The bottom line is we cannot chase or compete with many for wages or it will kill us like it did our “old” rivals.
However can the club not look at a better way of paying signing on fees? Or maybe they do?
BMCUW
“How much have we spent on failed punts up front?”
A lot and some of them were big money buys.
The trouble we seem to have is that all the experts who never make a transfer mistake and only bring guarantees and no brainers, are too busy posting on CQN and the like.
That leaves us selecting scouts from the ranks of those that played the game, and they keep making mistakes. Did Henrik recommend Mo Bangura?
BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS backs Resolution 12
One reason Pukki played relatively few games for Shalke was that he had Raul and Jan Klass Huntelaar ahead of him in the pecking order.

Hebcelt..
I’ll be forever in your debt.I know it’s just speculative at the moment, but it’s given me a boost.

Agree, too much emphasis on size at kid level.
My sister watches the U-15 and U-17 on occasion, and she reckons they wouldn’t be out of place on the door of a stab inn.
Is ability being overlooked in favour of that? Seems so.
Re BT/SKY
Wonder what the percentage is for people out in areas not covered by broadband speeds that are capable of delivering this on demand stuff. Most have SKY I suspect.
A celtic version of this would be a good read

I have never been a regular gambler, although some years ago my brother in law was site engineer for Mcleods.
There was a lad on the site who got tips very occassionally, from a good source.
One I do remember was called “Anyone’s Fancy” which romped home at 25/1.
£1 each way on the national is the extent of my interest now.
Mort
That is NO whit Ah think..
Ah think the Reason that Pukki played SO FEW games fur Shalke.
wiz.
He isnae Any use.. As a Striker!
Simple
And the Reason that Ah Think that..is
Well..
Ah hiv watched hin Play a Few Times.. and
Ahd Kin See Clearly..,
That.. Pukki, Hisnae goat it..

When It comes tae Playing as a Striker..
And that Goes DOUBLE..

“Is it any wonder that very few Scottish kids can control a ball under pressure, pass under pressure, take someone on, read the game ”
Dundee Utd alone have at least three who can do all of the above.
I am pretty sure Scottish kids compare favourably with those of other nations. You just have to look at the success of our( Celtic) youth teams to see support for this view.
Whilst not having access to the behind the scenes thinking at Celtic Park, I also believe that we do not give enough of our young players a fair chance. I don`t fully subscribe to the ” hammer-throwers” nature of Scottish football either. It was like that when the Hun were plying their trade but the Top Division now has its fair share of teams trying to play football.
JJ
So we are bringing in another project it seems.. That mean even less time for balde ?
What about the highly rated atajic?
What about tony watt ?
Hopefully this bhoy is just too good to pass up and thats why we are bringing him in.
Would love to see are fringe bhoys given a more regular run.
Well, all I see on here is a litany of posters stating that we are lucky to have the dross that we have, and we can never get better than that.
That disappoints me.
Count me out.
And,tell you what,if the board continue down the same line, you can count out an increasing number of ticket-holders.
allymac
Are our Youth players at Lennoxtown all strapping 6 foot plus players? Have you seen George, McMullan, Millar, McGregor, Herron, Twardzik?
Why would a famous ex-pro, like Chris Sutton, who has done nothing of note as a coach be any better than a guy like Danny or a lesser ex-pro like Chris McCart or Stevie Frail?
Ajax were producing better quality prospects from their Academy when it was being run by Dutch guys you had never heard of.
Celtic appointed the journeyman Jock Stein rather than the more talented Willie Fernie or Charlie Tully to take us to our highest level.
Bobby Charlton was a failed coach. Jack Charlton was a good one.
A coach needs a different set of skills than a player. Being a famous ex-player only gets you credibility until you open your mouth and run your first session. Many lazy ex-pros have been found out.
Kojo
How many games has Pukki started? Give the boy a break. He has been here for a couple of months and has two goals already.
You are more harsh than usual on the lad.

Hope the bhoy comes good, seems to have a decent attitude.

Grand National?
Bookies benefit. Though I have won a few quid in my time.
I think ten pence each way is more than enough for that race frankly.
Then I have a few beers…..
Is Lenny the only person who thinks that Pukki is a striker
a fair amount of that he isn`t
in which case ….who did we sign to replace Hooper and why is Pukki constantly deployed as a striker
BMCUW
“Well, all I see on here is a litany of posters stating that we are lucky to have the dross that we have, and we can never get better than that. ”
A false premise will always lead to a false conclusion.
Nobody is saying that. Read JJ’s post again. There is always room for improvement. There is always room to reduce mistakes and increase successes.
However, this club has been doing precisely that and been getting precious little appreciation for it from those who believe they could do it better.
….PFayr supports WeeOscar
Pukki could be developed as a striker like a certain Henrik Larsson but that will take time and patience. It won’t happen over night. The boy looks a bit short of confidence at the minute. I would have started him in Amsterdam.

For those who believe money = success:
Aye, aye aye aye
Messi is better than Balde.
If you want great players
Then you shop at Ha-rrods
And not at Lidl or Aldi.

Ask you sister to tell you the heights of the Celtic players she is watching.
Our bias is always to pick good players, not quite regardless of height, but giving it its due weight. For example it may be folly to persist in training a small goalie or defender whose parents are both below 5 foot but, beyond that, we select on skill and attitude mostly.
