Bucking underperforming recruitment trend

629

Every year we hear that January is a difficult time to do transfer business. Clubs are reluctant to allow top performers to leave midseason, but we’ve had some creative January activity over the years. Objectives for this month are clear.

We need to better prepare for our Summer Cup Finals. Trying to build a defence, or strike force, while simultaneously qualify for the Champions League is, unsurprisingly, tricky. Summer transfer windows are really two periods, the last days of the month, after European qualification has been taken care of, and earlier in the window, when limited volumes of business will take place.

We’ve done some great business early in summer months, most notably Virgil van Dijk, but instances like this are rare.

The most interesting aspect of this window will be how Ronny Deila is backed. He’s 18 months in the job now, long enough to come to an assessment of the wider scouting infrastructure he inherited. We’ve been underperforming on recruitment since January 2012. Ronny needs to buck this trend, and Celtic need to give him the necessary lateral.

  1. I’ve kept my own counsel since Saturday but I’ve read many heart felt contributions about the manager, the board and the fans. Firstly we won and that for me is always a good thing. For the last ten minutes we appeared united as a club and we drove forward to get a winner. Good.

The Fans. I was in a different seat on Saturday-South Stand lower-many around me were discussing the EPL, checking coupons, abusing the team, the manager and so it goes on. The Thistle fans were up for a day out and their West End wit was pretty cutting: “Where’s your famous atmosphere?” “This place is a library.” They were wrong with the second one as it appeared to be a bookies around me. I wanted to scream Celtic are playing but my mood darkened and I got quieter. The team were booed and the phones lit up in protest at the poor fayre being served on the field-well that’s why they joined in around me. Celtic scored a winner and many missed it.

It was not a great performance at all; in fact home games have in the main been very poor. However we were up against a spirited Thistle side, a SFA wannabe, down to ten men…come on support the team.

I don’t particulalrly like Ronnie’s team selections or tactics (Eurochamps covered that extremey well). I believe he is in the wrong job at the club as I hear he is excellent with the young players. Do we twist ? my preference is change but the more I think about it would changing the driver improve the performace of the car, which many believe is not funcioning as well as it should.

There are major challenges ahead of us as we go for three trophies this year, I hope Ronny gets the best out of the players he has. I doubt he will but I’ll support the team.

    Roy..,

Celtic park has been the worst place for support in Scotland, its like playing with a man down and by the sounds of it like two men down now.

People don’t go to Celtic park to support the team any more they go to be entertained and that is a direct result of how they have been treated by the executive, you cant treat people like nuisance customers and expect them to behave like supporters.

  4. Celtic linked with defender Aleksandar Pantic. I can confirm that my extensive scouting has revealed that his You Tube video is….from 2 years ago….

  5. BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS & KEVJUNGLE

I would suggest that were Celtic to offer (not that they’d ever be able to) £100M for Lionel Messi, £30M for Phil Jagielka, or £5M for Ikechi Anya, and in each case offer to match their current wages, none of those players would want to come to play in the SPL. And even if Celtic were guaranteed CL group stage participation every season, I still don’t think those players would come to Celtic Park.

Regardless of Celtic’s budget, the only way we will attract top level players is to be playing in a bigger and better league, where those players will have the opportunity to play quality opposition on an almost weekly basis, rather than (probably) six times per season.

Nothing Peter Lawwell does will change this, unless he gets us out of the Scottish League.

  6. Joe Filippis Haircut on

If we are to change direction I would like to see Celtic go down the Scottish route sign the best youngsters and actually play them get rid of the foreign players as the ones we bring in that stay with us are not top tier .I love supporting the hoops but my enjoyment could greatly be improved if I was watching eleven Scots on the park every week.H.H.

  7. Happy new year all.

I love the Guardian cryptic crossword and was so stumped by the headline on this CQN article that I tried historical allusion, anagrams, synonym, antonym, homonyms and just about every semantic and cruciverbalistic concoction possible to shed light on the author’s thinking…..

AND THEN IT HIT ME…. We sometimes make things more complicated than we need to…..

…….someone had mistakenly hit a ‘B’ instead of correctly pressing an ‘F’.

  9. What a ridiculous comment Celtic supporters are influenced by the media! I can recall when Fergus Mcann unfurled the League Flag that stopped 10 in a row; and he was roundly booed by a minority of fans (Sevco size) apparently he was wearing the wrong colour of socks…

  10. I see we are linked with a striker named Suk. We have signed a few who do. Is he one who disnae or is he a Ronseal type?
