Bucking underperforming recruitment trend

629

Every year we hear that January is a difficult time to do transfer business. Clubs are reluctant to allow top performers to leave midseason, but we’ve had some creative January activity over the years. Objectives for this month are clear.

We need to better prepare for our Summer Cup Finals. Trying to build a defence, or strike force, while simultaneously qualify for the Champions League is, unsurprisingly, tricky. Summer transfer windows are really two periods, the last days of the month, after European qualification has been taken care of, and earlier in the window, when limited volumes of business will take place.

We’ve done some great business early in summer months, most notably Virgil van Dijk, but instances like this are rare.

The most interesting aspect of this window will be how Ronny Deila is backed. He’s 18 months in the job now, long enough to come to an assessment of the wider scouting infrastructure he inherited. We’ve been underperforming on recruitment since January 2012. Ronny needs to buck this trend, and Celtic need to give him the necessary lateral.

Lawwell and Park sign/sell players, immaterial of our manager at any given time IMO HH

  2. Paul67,

We need to look in more detail at what has and hasn’t worked previously , and ultimately a lot of recruitment boils down to whether someone in power can spot a player when they see one.

Football has borrowed a lot from the way industry recruits in terms of process and evaluation procedures, but increasingly businesses are now relying more on gut instinct.

In last 20 years , we have had two recruitment goladen periods .

Dr Venglos only signed 5/6 players for Celtic who ranged from moderately successful like Riseth to highly successful like Johan and Lubo.

( Dr Jo also had Stan lined up, but ultimately Barnes sanctioned the deal)

We also had a good period under the first 2/3 years of NL when we recruited Commons, Ledley , Matthews , Wilson, Hooper, Forster all of whom were players Lenny either played with / against or had the inside track on – FF via Alan Th.

By contrast we have been reasonably successful in our signings from Israel ( Kayal, Bitton and Efe) and Norway ( Mikel and Stef) but our signings from Spain / Portugal have been a disaster Scepovic, Lassad , Balde etc.

    Conclusion from me is simple.

Assuming RD remains in position, the stats suggest he is not a good judge on recruitment – whether that is because of process or otherwise, the facts are he needs to get someone into his inner network who can judge a player.

He may be getting on a bit , but a phone call to Dr Jo could be a very clever short term move

Point taken re: who actually signs players. But it doesn’t change the issue of spending money now unless RD is replaced by a RD Mark 2 type.

It’s not a point it’s an opinion, calm down, you may agree with his opinion, but you just don’t know if it’s true, and I for one don’t think it is.

Are you seriously proposing that our signings under Clouseau the last 2 seasons have been good enough?

If so he’s got the wrong man to manage them given our performances in Europe?

Thank you for the information on Hyun Jun Suk.

I have completed my extensive scouting exercise and can confirm that his YouTube video is far superior to that of Amido Balde, but is still far from the finished, Maciej Zurawski-esque, article.

    These are my only findings…

Defenders with pace are nice to have, but if you are relying on them too often, it’s usually a sign of problems elsewhere.

Don’t worry mate we’ll come back with his cousin, Ki Jun Fuk who canny head or kick a baw and trapping is something only to be done in the Canadian wilderness:))

  10. Davie Hay knew a player when he saw one, I know he is in a role at the pools but maybe he could get involved in recruiting the right players, however he may be unwilling to do the miles requred now due to age /family etc.

  11. Agents sell players. Not managers COE’s or Scouts. It is more than likely when we now sign a player that in the contract is a clause that if an offer over a certain amount is tabled for a player then the player and the agent decide if he stays or goes, it’s the way now. PL does not scout pick or decide which players to bring in. The football dept. decides these things. PL becomes involved in the negotiations, if we can’t afford him we won’t buy him, he doesn’t decide not to buy for any football reasons por cierto.

Yes , our playing style leaves our centre backs exposed and imo that’s the reason for speed at the back

Will the scouting department reprise their production of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Wrong Man? It was quite a hit in Stockholm a few years ago…

Disclaimer: this is a joke and I am not alleging that Celtic signed the “wrong” Bangura.

  14. Afternoon Timland from a warm hun free mountain valley.

Pedro told us a few years ago that the signing policy was to recruit potential, bring them on and sell for profit, the coach has little say in the matter.

Our last coach Lenny knew this, wasn’t happy with it, it’s one of the reasons he left.

Pedro also told us that we are going down the foreign route, a route where coaches coach.

It’s a very sound and sensible route, it’s far cheaper to get rid of coaching staff than a whole bunch of players that a failed coach has signed, to think that the coach actually scouts and signs the players is real head in the sand stuff, the club are trying to save and make money, to allow the coach to sign players does not fit the policy the club have embarked on.

I personally think it’s the way forward, and I commend Pedro for doing it, my only gripe is the scout couldn’t spot a striker if he smacked him in the face.

  15. Not Celtic related by any means but nice to get a few quid after Christmas.

I was delayed 4 hours on an Easyjet flight and finally decided to chase them for compensation under EU law.

They paid up (250 Euros) without any hassle within a few days. You can claim for any 3 hours+ delays in the last 7 years or so if it’s an EU airline and it’s not weather related or ATC.

All the details are on the Martin Lewis MoneySavingExpert site. It only takes 5 minutes to make a claim and it looks like I’ve even got Ryanair to pay up!

  16. Mam update

all is well and she is well on the road again,

thank you for your thoughts and prayers,

When Leigh banged the baw in the back of the pokey on Saturday it certainly brightened up my full families outlook, dont know about those sitting round the bed oppisite my mam though :)))))))))

It’s my nickname for TD67 who I envisage as a loyal manservant to Lawwells Clouseau.

TD waits patiently for Lawwell to park his car at night then jumps him for a wrestle on the heated driveway before taking his instructions and swearing his oath of loyalty.

    Cultsbhoy,

I am sure he has to fight Paul67 for the right to wrestle with Peter Lawwell first ;-)

I think with a couple of tweaks we could remove the need for that. You only get away with it so often – especially in Europe.

A proper DM who can drop back into defence would be a start.

I’d also change one of our wide attacking mids. When both are on their “wrong” side it means the full-backs have to get forward to provide the width.

I would put one of them on their “right” side so we are not so reliant on the full-backs being forward.

TBJ. Im not sure the Villa striker can leave for nothing I took it to mean he doesnt feature in Villas plans and he can leave if he finds another club. I think the player cost Villa 7 Million but time will tell. H.H.
